FLOATING ON FEELINGS | Music Experience #93 (backspin 2024's best emotions on vinyl)

In mid-2020, the Tech Itch camp started sending emails teasing Moving Shadow-related action. It was a bright spot in the darkness of the pandemic, which was in many ways about things ending. This was something starting, or picking up a thread long abandoned. Moving Shadow, the most important dnb label of the '90s, trailed off in the 00s for any number of reasons.

Over/Shadow 01 dropped in November 2020, somewhat innocently with Blame's Lift Off/Star Traveller, tracks clearly made circa '96-'99. But unlike many pandemic-era DAT unearthing projects, the label then looked ahead. Since then, O/S has featured both Moving Shadow alumni (Dom & Roland, Technical Itch, Nookie, Flytronix) and current artists building on their legacy (ASC, Detboi, Abstract Drumz, Nectax).

5 years is both a short and a long time. In dnb, it's long, enough to build what I think of as a center. The music has countless branches now, some far removed from its roots. Over/Shadow has bridged the past with the future with intention and authenticity - no cash grab remixes, no publicity stunts. The label's confidence shows in its high number of two-track 12" releases. Today's profusion of music and high pressing costs have made four-track releases the norm. It's a statement now for a label to say, here are two tracks, they are enough.

This mix had to start with "Lift Off", but I had no preconceived notions otherwise. Fairly quickly an arrangement suggested itself: a warmup first third, a banging middle, a deeper last movement. The quiet winner here is DJ Trax, with 20% of the track list - 3 solo tracks and 2 collabs as Mixrace with Paradox.

These 25 tunes (and one tease) present just one path through the already considerable O/S discography. They omit a good number of anthems and great releases - a completely different track list would be just as valid. (In fact, there's probably a non-dnb mix lurking in the catalogue.) This is just my snapshot of Over/Shadow right now. That was what Moving Shadow excelled at back in the day, documenting the music. We are fortunate that Over/Shadow has carried on this work.

🇬🇧 Biography 

Born in the vibrant '80s, Timo de Vos discovered his love for DJing in the late '90s and has been sharing his passion for electronic dance music ever since.

With decades of experience at a wide variety of events, Timo has developed an instinct for reading his audience and setting good vibes and atmosphere, no matter the occasion.

Under his mainstream alias, ToMi, Timo has had the opportunity to perform on major stages, including Rotterdam Ahoy during De Vrienden van Amstel Live and even at Afrojack’s birthday. He's also shared the decks with renowned DJs like DJ Jean, Vato Gonzalez, and Paul Elstak. But for Timo, it’s not about the big names—it's about creating those memorable moments and spreading positive energy through his music. Groovy beats, dynamic variety, and an infectious energy that keeps the dancefloor moving!

As the years passed, this positive and energetic DJ's affection deepened for the underground sounds. In 2015, he gave birth to his 'underground' alter ego, Tim Petersson. As a co-founder of Stookhoksessies (Est 2014 as a “Boiler Room”-inspired concept based in the Netherlands), he explores deeper, more atmospheric journeys with a sound that’s still full of good energy and positive vibes.

In 2023, Timo reignited his love for vinyl and launched V.O.S. (Vinyl Only Sessions), bringing the warmth and authenticity of vinyl back to the dancefloor.

Additionally, Timo collaborates with Marijn de Ruijter (DJ Merain) as part of the duo Stuart & Dave(Two Minions), a back-to-back DJ act known for delivering high-energy, party-centric sets. From 80 to 160 bpm, they mix everything, ensuring non-stop madness with a blend of well-known tunes and unexpected twists—always fueled by pure energy!

I am primarily a D&B DJ since the late 90s, but I also play 70's Funk and Disco. I have played at events alongside Goldie, Doc Scott, Adam F, Klute, Nicky Blackmarket, Ed Rush & Optical, Randall, Grooverider, Bryan G, Hype, High Contrast, Brockie and more.
I have presented on Ipswich pirate Flex FM, as well as presenting on Ipswich Community Radio since 2000, and have interviewed Marcus Intalex, Klute, Bad Company, BCee and Mark & Clayton of TOV/Renegade Hardware.
