HACIENDA - JAN 27, 1991 - From the lost master tapes which turned up in storage last year, the raw master from my only Hacienda appearance in Manchester, U.K.   No editing or remastering, this is the raw uncut which I feel is important to keep in its original form.  There is a couple of glitches and noise issues but that is to be expected from a 24 year old DJ mix.

After a long, hot summer sojourn we are back with another mix courtesy of none other than Ali Black. AliBlack416 - the oft imitated never duplicated deejay, collector, producer, radio host and rave facilitator, who lives rent free in so many of our most resonant dancefloor memories. Ali's been holding the scene down for over 25 years with his productions, radio Nite Beat Radio, vaunted Toronto party Over + Over, and DJ appearances in a host of diverse Toronto and int'l venues. 
When you talk about style- the ineffable way in which a dj makes you move and makes you feel that  you can't quite put your finger on- Ali's got it in spades, diamonds + hearts. Mixing deep house into Serbian pop into sleazy disco, new wave, boogie and anything else you might conjure up- Ali's sets literally bring people to their feet and bring them together. He's also one of the best technical deejays in the game but you're really not thinking about that as you're gettin' down with wild abandon. We hate to use the word legend cause that infers he's not still doing it. 

So here it is- just over 90 mins of dance floor wax from an artist we are lucky to know and have in this city. Big big love from everyone at the Jerry- oh wait- GUESS WHAT??? He's playing here THIS SATURDAY!!! You best reach if you know what's good.

Dubwise atmospherics flood Guy Brewer's third RA Mix.

Hear the word "Dionysus" and you picture the Greek god of ecstasy: overflowing tables, delirious revelry, chaos. Not the austere soundworld of Guy Brewer, AKA Carrier. On the surface, the UK artist's latest alias feels almost Spartan. But look closer and the Dionysian link starts to show:  it's about shedding fixed forms and identities, to allow something more true, more alive, to form. 

RA.1011 marks Brewer's third entry in the RA Mix series, following editions as drum & bass outfit Commix (RA.269) and, later, the techno alias Shifted (RA.310). "I guess it's an effort to step away from purism," Brewer told <i>Resident Advisor</i> back in 2023. "Right now the thresholds between genres are where you find the most exciting music." 

Carrier's phenomenal debut album, <i>Rhythm Immortal</i>, delivers on that promise. Low-end pressure cloaks like foreboding shadows, punctured only by eerie, otherworldly percussion comparable only to Photek or T++. Listen to the LP in full and it feels like walking through a scene in a true-crime drama: a fog-drenched city street in the deep of night, ambushed by gusts of wind, whispers and strange noises—and it sounds totally, utterly original.

Tracing a line through dub pressure, fractured percussion and narcotic ambience, Brewer explores that same world on RA.1011. As with the album, there's a primal pulse that threads through the recording. Walls of negative space seem to hover before dissolving inexplicably, their tension intact; drums move more like the weather than rhythm. - Bella Aquilina

"This mix was recorded at Chillits, a nonprofit, DIY ambient-experimental-ish musical gathering in the woods of Northern California, now in its 26th year. I played late Saturday night, in the deep listening hours, following Rrose, Jon Carr, and William Selman.

I spent the weeks leading up to Chillits tinkering and editing some tracks, including recording and processing my own spoken word bits that I overlaid on two tracks (Ure Thrall and Aleksi Perälä). It's the first time I've ever done that, and I think it turned out well.

I'm very grateful to all of the Chillits organizers and volunteers for producing such a lovely gathering and to Hi-Vis for hosting this recording. Enjoy the mix!"
