Mycelium Decay is an immersive soundscape crafted using biosonification of mushrooms. This evolving auditory experience captures the intricate symphony of nature's lifecycle, symbolizing the profound interconnection between humans, animals, and the natural world. As the mycelium grows and decays, it generates a dynamic and organic soundscape, blending natural rhythms and ambient textures to create a living soundtrack of the forest. Through this innovative composition, listeners are invited to reflect on the delicate balance of ecosystems and the shared vitality of all life forms.

Mycelium Decay

This piece, "Mycelial Madness," transformed the signals from three distinct mushroom species - blue oyster, golden oyster, and lion's mane - into a full song. I captured great sounds by recording their reactions to various stimuli, such as touch and spraying with water. Clips from these recordings were then edited in Ableton and Audition. It was my first time trying anything like this, so I had no real direction besides trying all the different effects on the mushroom sounds and seeing what sounded the best. I also wanted this piece to sound like an actual song with a flow and rhythm, so I added percussion to make the track more engaging. Additionally, I added audio clips from the classic 1930s film "Reefer Madness" in the background of the composition and the very beginning for the build-up. This choice was to draw a parallel between the historical stigma surrounding cannabis consumption and the current misconceptions about mushrooms. The result is a seamless fusion of natural mushroom signals and human-made music, demonstrating the potential of biosonification.

The Healing Hum of Mushrooms -Fungi are an integral part of our existence, reflecting the fragility and regeneration of our lives. This piece showcases the use of fungi in sound design through biosonification technology and how this can positively further connect us to our environment
Fungi embody both fragility and renewal, mirroring the cycles of life itself. This audio piece explores sound as a form of healing, showcasing how biosonification technology transforms fungi into music. With Brian D’Souza discussing the “Swell” wellbeing app and forager Vincent Woodkin exploring the various ways mushrooms can be used, it highlights how sound can deepen our connection to nature and enhance our wellbeing.

The Healing Hum of Mushrooms

hard to imagine that there is more to the already ultra iconic flower of Mexico's Day of The Dead. Using biodata sonification technology (offspring of the lie detector concept) I convert this electromagnetic fluctuation data of the Cempasuchitl flower to  MIDI and then assign sexy digital musical instrument sound samples like those of a Steinway grand piano and a classic Hammond B3 Organ to the readout. After some perspicacious signal processing we arrive at this track. Enjoy The Data.

In this first EP, the poem Le Cygne by Sully Prud'homme set to music by Camille Saint-Saëns in Carnaval des Animaux guided my inspiration for the choice of contemplative, meditative and intoxicating poems.

Rainbow in the clouds

This piece was the result of a micro residency at Andover Trees United. We took readings from four different soil types to show how we as humans are effecting our environment just by the simple act of walking. As the sounds played via the process of biosonfication , we asked participants to respond with words. These words are the foundation of the haikus in this piece.
