Amör leans forward to present us with volume 18 of the mix series. Taking a similar approach to Fundamentals and volume 15, Amör sprinkles in a few of his homegrown bits amongst a soothing selection of late 90's old friends. Crashing the party with equally impressive vibes are some modern derivatives from arcologies, Rhythm Tek, and Sardo. This mix is a perfect nod to the universality of a timeless sound, unburdened by geopolitical limits.

Amör - Atmospheric Drum & Bass Revival Mix Series - Volume 18

It was an interview with the philosopher Karl Jung that kicked this one off really. He said something about the human psyche not being limited to space and time, which I thought was a pretty metaphysical thing to say. My own belief in a rational, tangible, three-dimensional universe ends where infinity begins. Ultimately, infinity simply cannot be explained or rationalized and never will be. In other words, all of creation is metaphysical.

Again I'm using TAL Drum and TAL Sampler as the driving forces in this track. I'm pretty sure the EP comes from the Wavestation. A few flute and odd samples in there as well. I use mainly vintage modelled VSTs as much as possible.

I am a big fan of triplets and polymeters, and this track contains both, sometimes both at the same time.

Space And Time

OK I wanted to do something with much more of a break choppage feel to it. This one uses two breaks - Hot Pants and Amen. I've also added a yummy LFO wobble to the 808 which I like so much I might do it a lot now. It's an easy process to achieve in the TAL Sampler. Breaks were all chopped in TAL Drum and everything mashed up together in Cubase 12.

I love dissonant chords and off-kilter sounds, sort of toys in the attic stuff. Actually I might use that as a track title. Dissonant chords are surprisingly easy if you can't read music, as I have discovered.

We The People

Bit of a strange one this. A solid two step drum and bass beat and an 808, but with odds and ends of jazzy guitar, dubby stabs and electric piano. I quite like the result though. Like nearly all of my tracks its at 165bpm. I found an old movie where an actress says she's hearing strange noises at night. That was enough to kick it off really. 

All produced in Cubase 12 in late 2024, with TAL Sampler and TAL Drum being my main weapons of choice. Keys and pads come from Kontakt, Wavestation, V Collection and various vintage modelled VSTs.

Strange Noises

Atmospheric jungle vibe here with a break-based dnb tune referencing 1960s jazz... and all that jazz. I love the imagery of Los Angeles in the 1960s, and I also love the 60s US beat poets so it all came together in a bit of a jungle tune mashup. I've had the Simple And Good sample for years but never really worked out where to use it. It ended up here.

Jazzy pianos and guitars again, mashed up with a break (Hot Pants if I remember correctly) and an 808, or actually it may be a test tone sample from an Akai S950 sampler. Sounds about right. I produced the track in 2024 using Cubase 12, TAL Sampler, TAL Drum, Wavestation, Pigments, V Collection and sort of mixed it all up really.

Patterns

A 90s ambient jungle feel with this one. Got that intelligent drum and bass feel to it, lush pads, bits of electric piano and flute, with a spacey space sample, which led to the Apollo Nine name. This is a break choppage track, I suppose my tracks are 50/50 breaks and programmed. I use TAL Drum for both techniques and it really excels at slicing and chopping breaks. It sort of continues on where Amigo leaves off, although to be fair Amigo does have some superb features not seen on TAL Drum. 

I also use TAL Sampler (SOOOOO glad I ditched Kontakt for my day to day sampling) and a variety of vintage modelled VSTs like Blue Beast, Orbhits, V Collection, Wavestation and others.

Apollo Nine

Music to take you off to the outer reaches... Crisp studio mix from label owner PHD and MC DRS circa 1999. Perfect combination of deep atmospheric ambience and melodies, tough beats, rolling basslines and DRS's lyrical stylings driving the vibe forwards...
PHD had a cache of wicked tunes (some still sadly unreleased) that never quite had the same exposure as the rest of the GLR camp but stood tall in their own right. Some exceptional music makers feature on this mix as well as appearing across the Ascendant Grooves release catalogue. One of those mixes that has never dated and still gets regularly aired.
