Teaching Civics in Turbulent Times

In the second episode of The City That Fun Forgot: Ottawa’s Nightlife Dilemma, called Sip, Skip, and Stay In, Alicia explores how Ottawa’s party scene is impacting young people’s social lives. Rising costs, safety concerns, and limited transit options are pushing students to adapt in different ways. Through the experiences of Carleton students Ethan Buckarev and Julia Rhymes, we uncover the realities of partying in "the city that fun forgot." Their stories give first-hand insight on what the problems are with Ottawa's nightlife and what can be done to make it better.

The City’s newly adopted 2025-2027 biennium budget and the structural differences in this budget vs. the previous budget. 

The newly adopted Public Safety Fee. How will that fee (begins appearing on City utility bills this August).

Some of the specific ways in which the Public Safety Fee supports the work of the Florence Police Department

The types of purchases on the horizon or wish-list, for the Florence Police Department, if any, and if those items are impacted by the current budget.

The current budget indicates that a Parks Program is the second most in-demand public service after public safety, but there is no specific Parks fund and that money previously used for parks must now be earmarked for Public Safety). Megan Messer discusses how the City will obtain funds to maintain, improve and create public park spaces.

The cost of living has gone up considerably and I’ve heard there is quite a bit of competition in terms of pay and benefits between cities and counties for qualified personnel. Megan Messmer and Chief Pitcher discuss ways in which the City has been able to maintain competitive pay rates in this budget to ensure we do not lose key personnel to other cities.

The Florence Police Employee’s Association that represents City officers.

How negotiations are handled between the association and the City and impacts to the current budget, if any.

Changes to the following funds in the new budget: Street Fund, Florence Events Center Fund, Building Fund, Airport Fund.
