Morikawa Kyoroku (1656-1715) studied with the great Basho for ten months, who was the one who chose his nickname Kyoroku because he excelled in all six (roku) art forms: calligraphy, painting, spear, sword, horse riding and haiku.

Polar Decomposition In Rhode Island (naviarhaiku572)

Renaissance Compost takes the experimental, microtonal piece "Musica Prisca Caput", by Nicola Vicentino c.1555, and treats it to a process of decomposition involving repetitive improvisation and extended techniques.
Acting like enzymes breaking down organic matter, the performers collaboratively weave an improvised tissue of timbres, intervals and silences that emerge from the diffraction, repetition and savoring of the original score’s notes.

Renaissance Compost

A decomposition of a re-transcribed 6-bar extract from "L'Enharominque" by Jean-Philippe Rameau in his Nouvelles Suites de pièces de clavecin (1727). Although the original title's use of the word "enharmonic" seems to refer refer to the multiple harmonic positions held by one pitch, here the original notes are re-transcribed into the actual "enharmonic" genus as it was conceived by the 16th century theorist Nicola Vicentino, resulting in many more transitory pitches.

This performance took place on July 5, 2024, Eglise Sainte Aurélie, Strasbourg, France, as part of the festival Les Habité·es.
