It's easy to find Saints trade rumors, but are any of them (even kind of) true? Ep. 355

On Friday afternoon, one of the world’s leading NFL reporters, Ian Rapoport, made a shocking announcement that Saints quarterback Derek Carr has a shoulder injury that could require surgery, a story that was later confirmed by The Times-Picayune’s Matthew Paras and Jeff Duncan. And if said surgery was needed, it could end Carr’s season before it even begins.

That’s a whole lotta couldas and wouldas and maybes. What’s true? What makes sense? What does the average Who Dat think? That’s how host Jim Derry spent most of his show on a Mano E Monday edition of Dattitude Podcast (Ep. 362) presented by Evangeline Securities. And there were plenty of opinions from the peanut gallery.

Gabe Henderson also shared his thoughts on the subject, and made his pick in another 'Man vs. Machine' segment, as Man tries desperately to improve its winning percentage. On ‘The Last Word,’ Jim pays tribute to former LSU wide receiver Kyren Lacy, who died Saturday night.

It's less than 1 week from the moment we’ll hear Commissioner Roger Goodell go to the podium in Green Bay and say “With the ninth pick of the NFL Draft, the New Orleans Saints select …” The big question is what name will come out of his mouth after that lead in?

Will it be a quarterback, like Shedeur Sanders, Jaxson Dart, Tyler Shough or Jalen Milroe? Is it necessary because of all the rumors swirling around current quarterback Derek Carr. What makes sense, and what doesn’t?

It has been one week since the New Orleans Saints chose quarterback Tyler Shough with the 40th pick of the NFL Draft. It seems as if ever since, the media has already anointed him as the starter for the team’s opener on Sept. 7.

In other words, the same “experts” who said the Saints would not restructure Derek Carr’s contract and would let him go are now saying Coach Kellen Moore will choose Shough and bypass Spencer Rattler, and at the same time dismiss Carr for real this time.

A vast majority of Saints fans who wanted Derek Carr gone got their wish this past weekend when the 34-year-old QB abruptly retired. Now what? Well, there’s no question the team is entering a rebuilding era, although General Manager Mickey Loomis and company don’t want to call it that.

How long will the honeymoon period last for both Coach Kellen Moore and his rookie quarterback Tyler Shough? And will they bring in a veteran to help in a QB room that is the only one without an NFL victory? Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to do my show live last week, so I chose to replay a pre-recorded mix from May 2022, which I sent to Point Blank Radio the day before it's broadcast. I selected this particular mix because it holds a special connection to James Baker, aka ReKaB, who very sadly and unexpectedly passed away the weekend before.

Back in 2022, alongside my weekly show on PB, I also hosted a monthly show called Rhythm Transitions on another station which no longer exists. In one of those episodes, I played three tracks from ReKaB’s Back In Flight EP on Nightflight Records. Shortly after, James reached out to say how much he enjoyed the show and asked if I could send it to him so he could listen at work. Following that, he kindly shared more of his music with me.

Since his passing, I’ve spent time listening through his Bandcamp catalogue, much of which I hadn’t heard before. The sheer amount of music he created, and the legacy he’s left behind, is truly impressive. His work carries so much emotion, and it has touched me deeply.

A year after that 2022 mix, I contacted James to ask if he might be interested in working on a project for my label, JuJu Muzik, alongside the legendary Harry Dennis (Jungle Wonz, The It). The track became Infinitely. At the time, James told me he had a Larry Heard-inspired piece that he felt would be a perfect fit and that my timing in reaching out was spot on. I sent him Harry’s acapella, and he returned with a stunning, deep, and timeless mix that completed the project beautifully. For this, I’ll always be grateful.

It was a huge honour to have ReKaB on the label. Thank you, James, for your kindness, your artistry, and the timeless, soul-touching music you’ve gifted us.

Rest in peace, James. The music lives on X

In a relaxed format, we will explain the injury, treatment options, and expected return to sport as well career impact.  We will have various guests - physicians, physical therapists, athletic trainers and some athletes talking shop.   Intended to be a little more light hearted than this topic is usually presented...   over a couple beers.
