How does one research and find data in the secretive and often contentious field of nuclear arms? In this interview, we sit down with Matt Korda to discuss the ins and outs of his fascinating work on global nuclear arms control, non-proliferation and disarmament. We had the pleasure of learning more about the most recent research reports and how this data is collected within an industry that is purposefully non-transparent. Matt Korda shares with us what he wishes was more commonplace knowledge outside of his field and which aspects of his work make him hopeful for the future of nuclear arms control and disarmament.  

Matt Korda is an Associate Researcher with the SIPRI Weapons of Mass Destruction Programme as well as Senior Research Associate and Project Manager with the Nuclear Information Project at the Federation of American Scientists (FAS). He co-authors the Nuclear Notebook with Hans Kristensen and has contributed chapters on world nuclear forces to the SIPRI Yearbook. Previously, he worked for the Arms Control, Disarmament, and WMD Non-Proliferation Centre at NATO HQ in Brussels.

Tara Plath is a PhD student in the Film & Media Studies Department at UC Santa Barbara. She holds an MA in Research Architecture from Goldsmiths, University of London and a BFA in Sculpture and BA in Visual and Critical Studies from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She is an interdisciplinary practice-based researcher whose ongoing research uses mapping and open-source investigation techniques to challenge state violence, surveillance, and militarization at the US southwest border in Arizona.

In a conversation following the end of Title 42, Tara and Taylor discuss the compounding crises of disappearance and death in the Sonoran Desert; border militarization and the weaponization of humanitarian aid as part of Border Patrol’s long-term strategy of Prevention Through Deterrence. Plath’s transdisciplinary research and activism helps us better visualize the devastating effects of the occupation of Indigenous land throughout the Sonoran Desert and beyond, while offering methods and platforms for transborder solidarity.

About the Speaker:
Jason Hsu is a visiting fellow at the Hudson Institute, leading the Indo-Pacific Technology and Geopolitics practice. He also serves as Senior Advisor on Policy and International Partnerships for Liquid AI, RunSafe Cybersecurity, Rhombus Power, and the American Frontier Fund. From 2016 to 2020, he was a legislator in Taiwan’s Legislative Yuan, where he championed key legislation on defense, technology, and cybersecurity. Hsu has also held research and teaching roles at Harvard, Yale, and other prestigious institutions, focusing on semiconductor policy, export controls, and Taiwan Strait contingencies. His work is widely published and recognized, including contributions to major global media outlets and think tanks. He was mentioned in the U.S. Congressional Record for his role in creating the Indo-Pacific Technology Security Alliance. Hsu holds a master’s degree from Harvard Kennedy School and is a recipient of multiple fellowships, including the Eisenhower Fellowship and Stanford’s Draper Hills Summer Fellowship.
