Imported the given field recordings, slowed down the tempo to 44. Killed most of frequencies in each of the „elements“, gated, compressed and ringmodulated a lot. In the master effect chain there’s a Native Instrument R48, which does all the magic. You wouldn’t wanna hear the piece without it.

This is a shared-sample project. Its theme is “The Four Elements.” The goal is to create a new piece of music by employing the following four source recordings, each of which is intended to represent one of the elements: earth, water, air, and fire. (Alternately, you can record your own source audio for any or all of the elements.) Your track should be be divided into four segments of roughly equal length, one for each element. Any two consecutive segments may overlap, but only briefly, up to three seconds. You can manipulate the source audio in any way you choose, but you cannot add any other source audio.

Alchemy [disquiet0069-4elements]

The rules of this project were broken. This type of music needs to develop gradually so as not to be jarring. For this reason, the sections are all at least two minutes in length.
They also overlap significantly, with parts of the Earth section being played throughout. This is due to the fact that when one hears one element, it is usually interacting with other elements to create that sound. For example, the only way to hear wind is through it rustling leaves or being funnelled through spaces. All sound must travel through Air to reach our ears.

Process: Downloaded the four source samples from Freesound, converted them as needed with Audacity, and then loaded them into Audiomulch.

Gave each sound a 'character' with a mix of built-in contraptions and a couple of Korg Classic VST Plugins.  Mapped mixer and selected effect parameters to knobs/sliders on a Novation MIDI controller, and (after 3 rehearsal runs) "played" and recorded this result.

Minor levelling/tweaking done in Audacity before uploading.

a brief survey of the elements [disquiet0069-4elements]

Apologies for any distortion, I've been suffering from an ear infection and so it's dulled my lug holes. I deviated slightly from the suggested source recordings and used http://www.freesound.org/people/suonho/sounds/17726/ for the water section as it was already on my hard drive.
I ran the source sounds through a series of fx chains, distortion,pitch shifting, gating, delay and reverb. I recorded some snippets and sent these into idensity, Samplr and LiveFx.
 I also ran the original recordings through PaulStretch's harmonic and octave mix effects. The water recording was loaded into Yellofier to create a bit of rhythmic movement. 
The limit of having overlaps of no more than 3 seconds made some of the transitions a bit sudden and I pretty certain there's a few spots where I might have extended the fade ins a little more than 3 seconds :)

Macrocosm (disquiet0069-4elements)

A very narrow frequency range was EQ'd in Ableton in order to find an interesting rhythm in the original tracks. Due to the high-frequency crackle in the fire track, it was isolated and a small segment was extracted & looped. This fire loop was sidechained to the original unaltered samples with a very low threshold, controlling the gate and creating a regular rhythm despite not adhering to a standard meter. The rhythm track was muted, creating the stuttering effect in the final track. Besides the compressor and EQ, no other effects were used.

Regular Rhythm [disquiet0069-4elements]

Disquiet Junto Project 0069: The 4 Elements

After a quick listen, I decided on the order Fire; Air; Earth; Water, mostly as a gut response.

Each track was processed separately, using vst effects plugins in Audacity only. Each track was processed multiple times and designed to be 75 seconds long on completion. I tried to keep the “character” of each element while making the track sound “musical” without any conventional musical processing other than emphasising the harmonics of the existing sounds. The rhythmic “Earth” track was achieved by doubling and folding the original, compressing it severely, cloning it over and over into a repeating track and then processing the result. Effects used included stretching, time-shifting, harmonizing, delay, echo, reverb, combs, autopan, double-tracking, reverse, phasing, amplifying, pitch altering, convoluting and corkscrewing.

Process:
I decided to use the given recordings, loaded them in Cubase and split / replicated them to create parts of more or less the same length. I wanted to remain the feel of a fieldrecording, but a treated one. So I worked on the parts separately with delay, grungalizer, filters, etc.  After that I stretched the total to 4 minutes. I loaded the output again in Cubase and used the  UAD- Moogfilter and a reverb on it.

Elemental re-formation [disquiet0069-4elements]

This one was quite a challenge - I set myself a goal of transforming the samples into somewhat musical sounds, rather than doing a noise piece.  "Air" was the hardest - I couldn't come up with a really good pitched sound that I liked, so we'll call the 3rd movement a noisy interlude...  At any rate, my objective was to make each movement evocative of its element, I'm very interested to hear what folks think.

This is my second Junto, second week in a row (go me!).  This process is really pushing me to learn my tools, and to get the proverbial cork out.

As far as gear goes, this was tracked in Studio One.  Sample manipulation courtesy of Audacity and Paulstretch.  Kontakt and XFade Looper feature prominently (and yes, that's XFade in the 4th movement - I didn't cheat! :)  ), effects were pretty much limited to Valhalla reverb, PSP delay, and the ever-lovely audio manglers from InEar Display.

I've become addicted to drone. Again. I was the kid with his head on the piano, listening to the overtones die away, or pressing his ear to the steel hull of the ferry, enthralled by the sounds it created. I was the kid who formed wordless songs to accompany the sound of train wheels on a long journey, or hummed along with the fan on a hot day.

In the 60s I used to play my 45s on 16, or backwards, or by hand using razor blades as stylii.

I made cut-up tapes on a cheap cassette recorder in the 70s and experimented with reel-to-reel in the 80s.
