Little Pick (disquiet0616)

Still und leise (silent and quiet) is a common phrase in German. I went from quiet to silent by reducing notes and timbre.

Not much more to say as my final approach was rather simplistic after working on a much more (=too) complicated version that ended up neither silent nor quiet (think Merzbow). I wish everyone a lovely quiet Sunday! (Or if you prefer, a hectic one - may everyone’s wildest dream come true today!)

Here’s a copy of my post on the Disquiet Junto 0616 discussion thread:

Chose to work with the words "calm" and "placid".

Created in Ableton Live using Fors Chiral and Slate+Ash Choreographs with Strymon Big Sky and Aqusmatiq Dedalus Delay for effects. Not sure whether I'm 100% satisfied with the result since I had a more quiet and subtle ambient vibe in mind when I started. Maybe I’ll re-visit this sometime in the future.

Disquiet 0616: Definition Jam
The Assignment: Explore, in music, the nuanced differences between two closely related words.

For this one, I chose the words "hum" and "buzz". I didn't get to spend a lot of time with this but I really wanted to make something this week since I love the assignment. 

I decided to do this with vocals. I think there's the obvious shift from "hum" to "buzz" that I create with a distortion effect on one of the vocal tracks. But I think the dissonance of the vocals also starts to push my sense of the sound from a hum to a buzz. 

When you look up the definitions, "hum" and "buzz" are described in the same way. But I think most of us wouldn't use the two words interchangeably. I think of a buzz as a bit more vibrational and distorted. A hum, a bit more of a steady drone perhaps. But then "humming" as a singing technique is sort of it's own thing because the notes usually change. I played around with both.  

I think the main difference is the frequency, with a hum being a bit lower and a buzz higher. The bitcrusher distortion I used on the low hum that started alone at the beginning shifts the frequency quite high.

bah hum buzz! (disquiet0616)

Despite my mum (and therefore half my family) being German, my own spoken German is truly woeful. I enjoy the pronounciation, I enjoy geeking out on German etymology, I can even understand it fairly well, but I lack fearlessness when it comes to actually taking the leap and forming sentences, much to my ongoing regret. So I really still cannot properly speak German, despite various doomed attempts to teach myself from time to time.

Anyway this was a fun challenge, since these were both new words for me. 'Schnattern' is the sound that geese make and 'plappern' is 'to prattle' apparently. I like the sound of the words themselves almost as much as the sounds they describe. I used field recordings as starting points and experimented with some new ways to process them musically. This was a rushed effort but I have been drifting into a habit of sidelining music recently and would prefer for that not to continue if at all possible.

The Assignment: Explore, in music, the nuanced differences between two closely related words.

Step 1: Think of two words in any single language of your choosing that mean “quiet.” For example, in English you might choose from “quiet,” “silence,” “hush,” and “tranquil,” among others. (Alternate: You could choose any base word for this project. “Quiet” is simply a recommendation. You might, instead, choose two words that mean “noise,” or something else entirely. Given the nature of this project, it may be best to choose a word related to sound.)

Step 2: Spend time coming to understand the nuanced differences between the definitions of the two words you selected in Step 1.

Step 3: Think about how you can render, through sound, the two different definitions, based on the thinking that you developed in Step 2.

Step 4: Record a piece of music that begins with the sonic rendition of one word and morphs slowly into the other.

During the early 1990s I studied Mathematics and Computer Science. The world wide web was still largely text-based and mostly empty. Today things are obviously different, though I still thoroughly enjoy art, design, cinema and music in all its forms. I have traveled all over the world for nearly two decades, visiting just over 140 countries. Japan is my favorite. All of this I attempt to incorporate into my music and art.

I'm a composer, song-writer and audio storyteller in San Francisco. My latest release is the concept album/audio artwork Marsification, created in collaboration with Zara Zimbardo. 

Previously, I created the podcast A Therapist Walks Into a Bar and the experimental radio show Shadowtime on BFF.fm as well as the EP We Find Our Demons' and mini album I Told You How Important You Would Be (with Pale Bird). 

My compositions and sound design have been featured in several podcasts and on BBC Radio 4.
