SUNBALL

Just north of San Francisco, in Muir Woods National Monument is a grove of redwoods named Cathedral Grove. These are the tallest and oldest trees in the park. I saw them once a long time ago and I'm still awed by the memory of them.

For this piece I used BBCSO Core and Epic Choir from Spitfire Audio, and the Pianobook sample pack "Neanderthal Pipe Organ" by Daniel Werner.

Based on an Anasazi cedar flute melody; flute built by Michael Allen (Coyote Old Man), uses Yangqin in Kontakt, tongue drum and other VSTs

Marcus Fischer https://soundcloud.com/marcus_fischer kindly provided 7 loops for this project. All his loops are integrated in the track, and it begins and ends with clear segments of them, as a way to acknowledge his generosity.
After listening to all the loops I thought that some of them could be stacked, some of them extended, and some of them stretched, in order to create a basic flow and tonal framework. The track includes some drum machines and processing of the original loops by means of pitch-delayed transpositions, harmonizations, distortions, etc., everything spiced with a bit of reverbs and delays.
The track made me think of a sunrise, moving from dawn to some frantic activity, to achieve rest again. And this idea made Monet's painting pop up in my mind.

Process notes 

Two words that mean "minimal" - "clean" and "essential." These two I rendered through sound in this piece.

"Essential" made me think of Junto Project 0530: Minimally Viable Music. I've been finding many opportunities presented in later Juntos to touch back on that concept and the methods I used to complete that project.

I started outside on a relatively warm October night for New York/Long Island using iPad/Audiobus with Burns Audio Spectrum through some Bleass and AudioDamage plugins. Spectrum is a suite of iOS plugins that use open source code from Mutable Instruments.

I used two earlier short sections of this 36 minute piece. One was a false start, a recording of about one second. Both were placed into their own track in Ableton Live and using Live's warp modes, "cleaned up" to produce something more intermittent, cleaner, more essential. Both were then treated to a number of Max For Live devices before being committed to flattened audio tracks and ultimately mastered with Ozone 9.
