I am thrilled and honored to share a new guest mix for the Sunset Lovers show from the boss of one of my favorite labels Tici Taci, a veteran producer, DJ, and all-around lovely man from London UK, Duncan Gray.

With nearly three decades of production experience behind him, his first vinyl label was started in 1997 (Scatolological), he is best known these days for establishing the Tici Taci label with help from the late great Andrew Weatherall. Tici Taci has more than 100 releases and celebrated its 10th year as a label in 2023 with a lot of special releases.

This label consistently releases superb leftfield dance music- chuggy, slinky, dubby, wonky floor-filling dance music. Uz Pa Gaz's Tiranan Balearica Omo Can was featured here in April and various tici taci artists, including Duncan himself, Rude Audio and Dan Wainwright, Boy Division, The Long Champs, Jack Butters, Mystic Thug, Mr BC and Fjordfunk have graced these pages in the past.

Tici Taci - bringing you electric funk rekkids at tempos below 120 bpm. No pre-packed freeze-dried loops, all tracks have live instruments well to the fore, from funky wah-wah guitars and deep chunky bass to temperamental analog synthesizers and live percussion.

Over the years Duncan has released tracks that have proved widely popular with DJs ranging from The Guv himself through to mainstream crowdpleasers like Boy George. As one half of the seminal early 2000's electro band Sons of Slough Duncan played many live shows as well as DJing around Europe and the US, and released records on a wide variety of labels including Skint. In recent times he's played as far abroad as Australia and has remixed the likes of Primal Scream, David Holmes, Red Snapper, Yothu Yindi, and Andrew Weatherall. He also played guitar on several remixes by Andrew Weatherall and regularly contributes guitar and bass parts to a host of producers worldwide.

The past decade has seen Duncan champion a sludgy, slow-mo take on dance music that favors chugging bass guitars and psychedelic sound palettes over software VSTs and drag-and-drop samples.

In recent times he has partnered with Sean Johnston as "Hardway Brothers meet Monkton Uptown": a mostly dub-based remix project which has also led to the pair DJing together.

Last year (2023) Duncan and Ian Weatherall resurrected the Sons of Slough for the 10th Convenanza festival in Carcassonne in honor of Ian's late brother, and will be playing more Live shows in 2024.

This week, the Sunset Loves show has reached the magic number 69 with another fantastic guest mix, this time from producer and performer Simon Sheldon from Ireland.Sunset Lovers 

Simon Sheldon has been writing, producing, releasing, and performing under many pseudonyms for over 30 years. He bought his first synth at age 10 and began working in ‘The Pink Museum’, OMD’s recording studio in Liverpool from age 16. 

After spending several years in Liverpool, playing small gigs in pubs and clubs in the evening and working with the likes of Echo and the Bunnymen and The Real People and with influential producers like Michael Hass (808 State & Primal Scream) during the day in ‘The Pink Museum’, OMD’s recording studio. 

On arriving in Belfast in 1995, Simon started writing, performing, and releasing as Solaris before forming the drum'n'bass outfit Spree. Spree went on to release many tracks on labels such as Aspect Records, Basic, Formation Records, and NIR, and later a full-length LP on Anamorphic Records.

As a side project, Simon joined forces with Paul Brown (Bedlam) and Robin (Touched and Crazy) to produce dub reggae and also performed a live set supporting the Legendary Lee "Scratch " Simon also played keys on the highly acclaimed ‘Suzume Park LP by a the Irish nu-jazz maestro’s Bellcrash.

In 2012 Simon started writing and DJing with Quentin Kane and instantly found a connection through house, funk, jazz, and all things soulful.  
In 2017 Simon and Quentin got invited by DJ Spen to produce a full-length mix LP in the ‘Unquantize Your Mind series’ on Unquantize Records. A debut 20-track LP titled ‘Exodus’ followed in 2019 on Unquantize. 

During lockdown, Simon produced a solo studio LP in 2020, The Four of Swords which tells a story.  
2021 saw the 2nd full-length LP from Quentin and Simon released under the Naked Bongo Band pseudonym which saw a moving away from the house sound they are renowned for and marked a dive into the wonderful world of Funk, Nu-jazz, and Breakbeat. 

Simon is also behind the prolific record label The Freebooter Lounge and the long-running freebooter radio show which guested on Café Mambo radio during lockdown in 2020.

Simon’s d’n’b alias Spree released a 4 track EP on the huge Formation Records offshoot NIR which received support from dons like Andy C & Ray Keith and his Freebooter Lounge label released over 100 tracks by the close of 2022 including 7 full LPs and top 2022 off, TFL released 'ONE' a collection of some of the Freebooter releases to date with ‘TWO’ coming out in November 2023. 

Great DJ support and a very busy forthcoming DJ/live schedule highlights of last summer were a set at ‘poolside’ at the legendary Pikes in Ibiza and the legendary Golden Lion in Todmorden.

More balearic beauties this time for the Sunset Lovers are coming from Cape Town in South Africa, and one of the halves of Jamjar Sessions, Otto de Vries.

He has been DJing since 1985, starting with High Energy and Italo and moving on to House, Trance, and Techno. In the late 90s, he discovered Kruder & Dorfmeister and Thievery Corporation through the DJ Kicks series. 

He developed a deep appreciation for the Acid Jazz, Trip Hop, and Lounge sound of the late 90s, leading him to launch "Lounge on Thursdays" weekly in Johannesburg and later in London. 

Now living in Cape Town, under the shadows of Table Mountain, he has reconnected with those roots and fully embraced the Balearic vibe. His passion for the chugging sounds popularized by the infamous ALFOS nights keeps him as excited about music and DJing as he was back in '85.

I hope you're ready for a slice of sun-drenched, peak-time bliss because this week for the Sunset Lovers, Berlin-based producer, DJ, label manager, and teacher well-known as Noema takes you on a fantastic journey through the untamed wilderness of Balearic Beat, featuring hidden Gems and golden classics.

Looking back at more than two and a half decades of DJing, Noema is a true master at the decks. Constantly refining his craft during a former 10-year residency at the legendary Berlin Club institution Wilde Renate, Noema developed a unique style and nothing short of impressive abilities.
By combining profound selections, fascinating dramaturges, and exceptional mixing skills, his DJ sets take the audience to ecstatic highs beyond their wildest imagination.

Noema's career as a producer and label owner started with a bang when he released his very first record, the African Shakedown EP. His edit of Ata Kak ‘Daa Nyinaa’, a stone-cold fox of an anthem, became a massive hit instantly. The record was considered one of the hottest records of 2013 by FACT Mag and was on heavy rotation with Soul Clap, Axel Boman, TEED, Erol Alkan, and Psychemagik...

In his studio work, he has released six very well-received EPs as well as collaborated with electronic music heavyweights like Dj Dixon, Daniel Wang, Sabo and Grammy winners Basement Jaxx.

In the winter of 2023, Noema released his debut Album, which is part of his comprehensive art piece called ''ONE''. The piece is an ''Interactive Performance Installation'' and gives testimony of Noema's holistic artistic vision and abilities. 

The original album is accompanied by two remix EPs featuring artists like Lauer, Kalabrese, Mehmet Aslan, Shubostar, Panthera Krause, Lovefingers, Kelpe, and Nicola Noir.

It is impossible to categorize Noema's sound in common genre terms. Without borders, he creates his very own and truly unique blueprint of contemporary club music. His eclectic music selection flows freely between all kinds of electronic music. Between Downtempo and House Music, he adds Brazilian tunes, Turkish edits, Disco jams, Balearic rides, Folk-Rock, Pop, Jazz, and everything he finds worth sharing. Noema's aim as a DJ is to find the perfect soundtrack for the moment, may it be a dark Berlin basement in winter or a day party at the beach in Mexico. Mostly psychedelic and always soulful, sensual, surprising, rich in percussion, and ranging from a good old rave to groovy beach vibes, his sets are always unique and tailor-made for the occasion.

Through his strong affinity to slow grooves and contemporary electronic music from South America, he developed the „Cozmico“ concept, which connects the „new“ downbeat scene around artists like Voodoohop, Nicola Cruz, and himself to Cosmic and Afro Style of DJs like Daniele Baldelli and Beppe Loda. 

Furthermore, Noema is the co-founder, artistic director, and A&R of The Magic Movement label, home of artists like Oceanvs Orientalis, Nicola Cruz, Xique-Xique, Crussen, Dreems, Luca Musto, Yor Kultura etc. Founded in 2013, it was one of the first labels that supported the new downbeat scene. The focus of the label lies on all kinds of percussive and psychedelic dance music.

More sun-bathed melodies are coming up for the Sunset Lovers show from one beautifully talented girl from NYC Rachel Opert.

If you haven't heard anything from her, now is the time.
This 23-year-old collector, curator, and NYC-based DJ will take you on a real cosmic journey through time.
With a background in vinyl and a focus on the forgotten, her taste is expansive and mature,  and her selections are seductive and hypnotic. Often with a through-line of breathy female vocals, she gravitates towards leftfield disco, electro, balearica, soul, dub, psych, folk, and jazz. When she isn’t digging, Rachel plays out several times weekly at clubs throughout NYC and Brooklyn.
