Line Noise is taking part in the 30th anniversary celebrations of Barcelona's famed club, Nitsa, including interviews with some of the key players in Nitsa's history.  In episode 3, we talk to Erol Alkan, who played his first DJ gig outside the UK at Nitsa and who has returned to the club ever year since. He is also the favourite DJ of Nitsa resident DJ Coco. Erol shared his memories of Nitsa and of club music from 2000 to 2002. You can also consider this part 2 of our recent interview with Erol.

TFU Dirty Dozen Vol. 6 – Ash Lee (2008)

This mix was recorded back in 2008 as part of the Dirty Dozen CD series for TFU. It was one of the first curated sets where I really started to explore layering acapellas throughout the mix, something that’s stuck with me ever since. Most of it was mixed on vinyl, with CDJs used for layering vocals. One of the acapellas is even reversed… and somehow it worked.

The sound I was playing leaned into bass-heavy foundations, punchy drums, and a slightly left-field take on what was dominant around that time. I was trying to avoid the obvious records and shape something that felt like my own.

But everything changed when he experienced his first AWAKENINGS techno party in Amsterdam over 20 years ago. That day, he had an epiphany! As the son of a professional flamenco singer, Thomas has always been surrounded by music.  Exposure to flamenco influenced him because it has a dynamic range of emotions—from the "deep singing" style of cante hondo, to the more lively alegrias.  He has also worked in the corporate, independent, and online music industry for a number of years.  At one point he was a Content Manager for the Electronic Music genre at MP3.com, where he screened over 500 songs per day.  Exposure to a wide range of music explains the range of genres in his mixes—he uses whatever carries the mood.  From listening to Umm Kulthum's "Enta Omri" in his childhood, to New Wave and  Industrial as a teen, it became difficult for him to stick to one sound. Though vinyl was his original format of choice when he started in the 90s, the use of digital mixing has helped him better form soundscapes to expand your headspace.  Let him play with your moods for a spell.

I’m Andy, a former ‘roadie’ turned electronic music creator. 

After 25 years of touring with various acts, the pandemic halted my travels. Inspired by Gary Vaynerchuck’s call to action, I decided to return to making music, specifically dance music which I’ve always loved. Despite having to learn new technology and business models, I now spend most of my time creating music.
