Evolution is not believed because the scientific evidence requires it (it doesn’t). It is held to because the only other option, deliberate creation by a Creator, is distasteful to the atheistic scientific community.

This session covers the various theories of evolution and creation and touches on the evidence for each theory.

Creation/Evolution 1: The Theories (Doug Wilson)

When evolution was first advanced in the modern world, it was presented as an alternative to Christianity and creation. In an attempt to reconcile the Scriptures with this new “science,” concerned Christians constructed the theory of theistic evolution.

Creation/Evolution 2: Theistic Evolution (Doug Wilson)

What is the evidence for evolution? Darwin was a keen and thoughtful observer of the things around him. Influenced by the mechanistic mindset of his time, Darwin sought to understand and explain the diversity of species and their traits through natural processes. This investigation led him to develop his concept of natural selection, which combined with a long-age time reference, became his theory of evolution.

What Was Darwin's Theory of Evolution Really About? part 1 - SC2504

What is the evidence for evolution? Biologists have worked hard through the one and a half centuries since Darwin published his theory of evolution to gather supporting evidence for it. Much of the initial evidence was rooted in the fossil record, which suggested species evolution from lower to more advanced organisms in context of a long age time reference. Evolutionary links between species were assumed based on skeletal and physical similarities, and stemmed back from an unknown universal common ancestor. But the understanding of genetics has challenged these initial views due to the surprising and unlikely gene matches that have been discovered. This leaves the accumulated evidence for Darwin's tree of life model in a conflicted position.

What Was Darwin's Theory of Evolution Really About? part 2 - SC2505

What is the evidence for evolution? Darwin's belief about human evolution was influenced by Thomas H. Huxley, who proposed that humans descended from apes. This was evident to Darwin because of the anatomical similarities shared between humans and apes. Darwin also was persuaded that humans descended from fish, based on the notion that the embryonic state of each species indicates the structure of their less developed ancient progenitors. At that time, it was assumed that the embryos of many different species were fish-like. Subsequent scientific research has given evidence that these ideas are highly inconclusive at best, and in the case of the embryos, false.
