Scientists have discovered a site along the Oregon coast inhabited between 8,000 to 3,000 years ago. The site is rare because many early Oregon coastal sites have been lost due to erosion and rising sea levels. In this case, the moving sand that forced inhabitants to leave the area also protected the site from erosion allowing archaeologists a rare glimpse into early life on the coast.

Along with artifacts at the site, geoarchaeologist Molly Kirkpatrick discovered what she calls "Dirt of the Right Age" that will help archaeologists discover similar sites on the coast.

Molly Kirkpatrick is an archaeologist with the Siuslaw National Forest who was instrumental in uncovering "dirt of the right age" near Tahkenitch Landing on the south central Oregon coast.

Molly shares how people adapted to coastal changes between 8,000 and 3,000 years ago on our coast, what caused the coastline to change, and how this "dirt of the right age" (from one of the earliest inhabited Oregon coastal sites) may help archaeologists locate similar sites along our coast.
