Gaetano Fiorin - First Refraction [Effortless]

Over a decade of making plant music, followers of Patitucci’s work with Data Garden and PlantWave often asked, “what would marijuana music sound like?” Now, finally, we have an answer.

Earlier this spring, Patitucci was invited by leading cannabis brand, Old Pal Provisions, to visit one of their partner grow facilities, Ladybug Farms, in Royal Oaks, CA to tune into cannabis plants and make some music.

It was there that Old Pal’s HiFi Lemon plants were fitted with a PlantWave, which translates plant biodata into music, a process called “sonification.” Joe designed instruments and sounds for the cannabis plant to play and used PlantWave as a MIDI controller, allowing the plant to select every single note. Joe, then, altered the textures of those instruments on-the-fly, creating the first ever album in collaboration between a cannabis plant and a human. The elaborate score resulting from this visit was used to compile the album, 420hz: Plant Music from Cannabis Plants. 

The lyrical nature of the melodies from cannabis plants are, at times, surprisingly catchy. This is demonstrated most clearly on tracks 1-4, which are shorter edits that highlight some of the best bits of music recorded at the farm. Track 5, HiFi Lemon, is a document of the full recording session, named after the strain of the plant collaborator on the recording.

All instruments on 420hz were scaled to the key of G# (415hz) and pitched up to 420hz in post-production. There is nothing pre-recorded on the album. The resulting compositions are offered to the public in the hopes of inspiring new visions of what future collaborations between humans and nature might yield.

A child of the Breton electro soil, Anatole first grew within the Brest scene, where he crossed paths with Astropolis and the many free parties orbiting around it.
Armed with his camera for over a decade, he explores every layer of electronic music, training both his eye and his ears.
After landing in Rennes in 2021, he founded RoazClub, an audiovisual and event collective where he imagined STIMUL, a multifaceted video format.
His sets explore a trance-like space where mystical techno, punk, and bass collide — celebrating the eclecticism of club music.

"Si vis pacem, para saltationem ad Goam." An ancient Roman proverb (604 BC) meaning "If you want peace, dance to GOA." Or at least, that’s what Binaryman would have you believe. Truth is, he just really loves spinning massive old-school GOA sets whenever he gets the chance.
After logging what must be hundreds of thousands of hours immersed in the genre—at work, at home, at parties, at GOA festivals—he’s fine-tuned a deep and obsessive love for that hypnotic psychedelic pulse. It’s this devotion that earned him a spot as DJ and producer in the Taïma Project crew.
