Before Ma-tsu became a teacher, he was training at Nan-yueh’s monastery, one of several hundred monks lost in the crowd.  A senior monk noticed how diligent he was and mentioned him to Nan-yueh, who found him alone in the zendo and asked, ‘What is your purpose in doing zazen?’  When Ma-tsu replied, “I seek to become a Buddha’, Nan-yueh picked up a tile and began rubbing it with a stone.  Ma-tsu was surprised.  “What are you doing?” The teacher said, "I’m polishing this tile to make a mirror.”  Ma-tsu asked, ‘Can a piece of roofing tile be made into a mirror?’  Nan-yueh asked in return, “Can a Buddha be created by doing zazen?”  Their dialogue continues,  Nan-yueh encouraging Ma-tsu, who realises the mind-ground. What is your purpose?

What is your purpose in doing zazen?

How many of you guys do this thing where you feel like you need to protect others from you? It’s such a humanoid thing. Here’s what I want you to look at: What is actually your core agenda? All of you can look at this for yourselves, whenever it’s relevant. Because a lot of what the intention behind leaving Access was — for some of these people, not for everybody — was to trigger a doubt that disconnects you from the joy of receiving, the ease of caring, and the freedom of knowing what you know. That’s the intention: to pit you against that.

And if you look at it, when you’re protecting others from you, you have to ask: Okay, so what’s really true here? What I do — when I realize something like that — is I ask myself:
What is my intention?
What’s really my agenda?
What’s my agenda in this business?
What’s my agenda in this facilitation?
What’s my agenda in this conversation?
What’s my agenda in this relationship?

And I’ve looked at this in everything. Because you don’t just have one agenda in all relationships — you have different agendas in different relationships.

SOUND, SPACE AND TIME

Tend your listening senses gently. Even though my general approach welcomes and embraces lo-fi concepts like the precision of spontaneously occuring imprecisions, headphones worth their membranes are recommended - unless you like your sounds flat, mangled, battered and helpless. You don't, do you? Be kind to these soundscapes.

STRUCTURING IMPULSE

Due to the nature of "poetry soundscapes", your listening expectations regarding traditionally structured "songs", sonically purified "raw wildlife soundscapes", keyboard-laden "ambient recordings" or voice-centered "readings" might not be met. You will find some of those in my list of /likes/. "Noise" is a recurring structural element like any other. This is what this sounds like - within its own rights, limitations, tangents and interconnections. Sonic structures. Silent stretches. Poetry emerges from the gaps between the ruts, seeps in from the undergrowth, sweeps down.
