I wrote this song to try and capture some of the feeling of living in a neurodivergent mind day to day. It can feel like a real slog sometimes, usually resulting in total disconnection and numbness or the absolute opposite end - total overstimulation and being super irritable (poor Sam). 

For me, my experience of ADHD-C and OCD is mainly one of trying to pick up the pieces I keep dropping (and forgetting about) and ‘sort my life out’. Easy things can feel like impossible challenges and the shame that comes with that struggle can result in loneliness that we try to push away and ignore. 

At least once a month I’ll come up with some new system that’ll mean I have finally ‘beat the ADHD’ - recently these have been buying a work phone, redecorating and reorganising my office/ studio, and meticulously scheduling my weekdays so all my jobs get done… The problem is when you wake up the next day and quite literally forget you even came up with that system, it doesn’t really work, does it? (Yesterday I found my work phone in my bag, dead, that I had forgotten existed since last week). 

Out of sight = out of mind. I tried to combat this by printing off my schedule and putting it on my desk. But the next day I forgot to go into my office… So. Case in point.

After I was diagnosed and medicated last year, there was a huge pressure (I felt) to ‘unmask’. It was as if now I know what’s wrong with me, I can stop trying to hide it and just ‘be myself’. The problem is, when you’ve always hidden who you really are or how you really feel, that’s a bit of an impossible task. Cue more shame. 

Anyway, I tried to throw these feelings and experiences into this song. For those of you that are interested musically, I’ve mixed up some different time signatures, detuned bass, irregular structure, amongst other things to try and complement the lyrical story, which is ‘God, this is so hard. What’s wrong with me? Why can’t I just do these things like everyone else? Why is this so hard? Just keep going. You’ll figure it out. Oh wow, I think I’ve got an idea, this could work! Yay, I’ve mastered my ADHD and now the world is my oyster!’ - only to forget (or it not work) and repeat again tomorrow, and the next day, and the next. 

It’s just a demo that captures a struggle for me, and I’m hoping some of my fellow neurodivergents out there might connect to it and get some relief in knowing I’m right there with you!!!
