Alexander Beiner is a writer and podcaster. He’s one of the executive directors of Breaking Convention, and the author of the book The Bigger Picture: How Psychedelics can help us make sense of the world.

Matt is a BASE Jumper and deep thinker. In this episode, he proposes the unlikely position that is essentially; "If you are going to jump off the bridge, at least let me come with you. At least share with me your thoughts before you go." This is an incredible shift from the typical response that is "Please dont do it! I beg you! You can't! Think of how sad your mom will be!". We also go really deep into the dynamics of communication that lead people to feel isolated emotionally and might even lead to their suicide - as well as the types of communication that might lead them away from the edge. We also talk about being enslaved by existence and how freeing of an act suicide really is, and how considering suicide might actually help people choose life. It's a crazy and powerful episode and the first one on which I actually cry. Its sad as fuck to think about how many millions of people think about, struggle with, attempt or succeed in killing themselves each year. Something is certainly broken here, my friends, and my heart breaks in response to it.

Suicide and Communication - Matt Blank

Our identity loops - the process in which we are guided, affirmed and given feedback - are broken. They used to be closed by our parents, our families, our communities. Now they are being highjacked by social media. There is a wave of depression, suicide and meaninglessness that has arrived on our shores and we are turning a blind eye to its cause. We are pretending to not know why this is happening because we are, ourselves, addicted to it. We as parents are still seaching for our identities online, and our children are paying the costs. 

The question of 'Am I doing it right? Do you love me?" is something that we need to bring into the light, because we are all asking it and we always have. Our children are asking it, and we're no longer answering. We're leaving them to fend for themselves, online, with the mob of group think and keyboard warriors. This is fucked. Get off social media. Do it right now. Delete the apps. Block the websites. Do it for yourself and do it for your children. We don't know where this will end, but the chance that its with rainbows and butterflies is absolutely zero.
