This talk explores the perils and wonders of working with mediaeval music in our times, its transhistoricity and alterity – including 13th-century compositions as time-dilating black holes, possessed synthesisers exploring the boundaries of divine determinism and catastrophic polyphony traversing the wartime reality. Heinali is a Ukrainian music composer and sound artist whose core practice reimagines Early music with a modular synthesiser, exploring intersections of the Providence and Contingency, the past and the present, technology and the sacred.

Entropy Tango is the musical project of John Stratford.

I’ve been deeply involved in immersive sound experiences through pagan and shamanic camps, where live drumming and chanting sessions were recorded in a Roundhouse—an acoustically rich, natural space that shaped the character of the sound. During these gatherings, I captured hours of raw audio using a Tascam recorder, including performances with Tibetan cymbals, Ting Sha, tongue drums, and various other acoustic instruments.

These field recordings were later processed through my modular setup. At the heart of my system is Pamela’s Pro Workout, serving as the main clock and trigger source for the Rample—a four-channel sample player loaded with loops and textures, including sampled drum loops created in Studio One.

I incorporate analog noise to modulate various voices, and use modules like the Cursus Iteritas Percido—a dynamic wavetable oscillator—routed through the Viol Ruina, a low-pass filter with built-in distortion. The result is a layered, evolving sound that merges organic recordings with modular synthesis.

MODS2.03 - Entropy Tango


“The hardware world is like a sport.” The DJ and producer talks about mastering synthesis and finding community in a male-dominated music ecosystem.

Is talent innate? Today's guest, producer and modular synth extraordinaire Sibel Koçer (AKA JakoJako) doesn't think so. She's seen an extraordinary rise in her career in the last few years, earning a residency at Berghain, releasing on Mute Records, playing live shows at festivals around the world and becoming an in-demand remixer and collaborator for artists from the worlds of classical music, techno and pop. But she doesn't think she got where she is because of some God-given gift; instead, she says, her success is the result of tireless hard work.

Many years ago, when Koçer moved to Berlin to finish nursing school, she spent slow periods in her job poring over modular synth manuals. She eventually abandoned nursing and instead chose to pursue an internship at the popular Berlin synth shop SchneidersLaden, where she started learning the ins and outs of building her own system and making her first connections in the modular synth world. In this Exchange, she talks about the specific dynamics of the producer community that loves and uses hardware—which she describes as competitive and "sports-like"—as well as being a woman in this environment, finding creative inspiration from synth manuals and channeling her energy into mastering synthesis when she felt she had no other choice.

Koçer is curating a compilation called Hardwired for the label Air Texture, which will be out on July 11th. It showcases music from the community of hardware enthusiasts and people who have an appreciation for machine-based music, including Rødhåd, The Field, Acid Pauli and more. Oleh Shpudeiko is a music composer and sound artist who performs under the stage name Heinali. His core practice draws on medieval music and compositional techniques, continuing their tradition through contemporary electronic music and modular synthesis, using the past as a mirror to reflect and process contemporary experience. While his primary focus lies in studio albums and live performances, Oleh also composes music for video games, films, and choreography. His credits include the award-winning soundtrack for the video game BOUND (Plastic/Sony Santa Monica), the 2020 album MADRIGALS, shortlisted for the Shevchenko National Prize, and sound art commissions from institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York (MoMA), the National Art Museum of Ukraine (NAMU), and the Museum of Odesa Modern Art (MSIO). He has an extensive performance history, with appearances at festivals and venues including CTM (Berlin), Rewire (The Hague), NEXT (Bratislava), Musikprotokoll (Graz), Primavera (Barcelona), Unsound (Krakow and Adelaide), as well as Plivka and Next Sound in Kyiv.

In this next chapter, the podcast will focus mainly on live performances from electronic music artists who embrace a DIY approach to creativity — many of whom perform at EMOM and similar grassroots events.

Over the past few years, I’ve been attending various EMOM (Electronic Music Open Mic) events across the north of England. It’s at these gatherings that I’ve discovered some incredible talent — from both familiar and often unknown artists. This includes close friends, whom I’ve had the pleasure of watching take to the stage and perform for the very first time. The whole experience has been inspiring — and eye (or ear) opening, to say the least.

Valhjim is a music composer with an eclectic approach to different genres: rock, pop, folk, New Age, and experimental electronic music. Greatly driven by imagination and poetic imagery, he combines multiple instrumental textures to fire the imagination of his listeners. 

His more experimental ambience and electronic music is built with layers of suggestive sound textures, rhythms, and melodic lines that stir the imagination into suggestive imagery and worlds unseen, true architectures of sound that open up limitless spaces to explore. Often Valhjim's melodies sail through genre thresholds, crossing over from one genre to another, from neo classcal to electronic, or from jazz to rock or new age.
