As the lyric suggests, Ryland Fisher literally slowed the jukebox down when recording his own version of the hit he co-wrote with Joey Ebach and its first artist, Stephanie Quayle. The original version of ‘Whatcha Drinkin’ Bout’ is playful, sassy, and flirtatious—but Fisher’s version on Sleeping with Ghosts: Volume I is gentle, inviting and, well, sad. The guitar echoes with heartbreak, and the way Fisher approaches the title question seems to come from a place of recognizing sorrow in a fellow broken heart. Fisher is the master at taking an idea and wrestling it into a feeling that transcends age, gender, and background. In this case, fans will be thrilled that he’s taken the same song and completely reimagined it into something that feels brand new.

There are two milestone moments that come in the aftermath of a romantic relationship. There’s the moment you decide it’s really over, and then months—maybe years—later, the moment you finally feel like yourself again. ‘Two Steps Back’ sees Ryland Fisher writing about the excruciating in-between. The production of this country heartache ballad is simple- made up of guitars and synthesizers, but the sentiment hits deep and every lyric will resonate with anyone who’s been through a breakup.

Two Steps Back

Ryland Fisher’s ‘Till It’s Over’ feels like heartbreak from the first note. A sweet mandolin ushers us away to a scene we’ve heard Fisher croon about before: a crossroads on the precipice of a breakup that somehow feels both premature and a long time coming. Lyrically and vocally, this is the most vulnerable he’s ever sounded. The lyrical picture is crystal clear with, “I can’t rewrite the words written on your face,” and, “If there’s a piece of your heart that ain’t broke yet, baby, maybe there’s still something left to save.” Is the battle of this relationship worth waging anymore? With desperation in his voice, we hear Fisher make a case for why it just might be.

Till It's Over

The most swoon-worthy song on the album, ‘Take You Home’ can be summed up as literally everything you’d love to hear on a first date. And immediately following ‘Whatcha Drinkin’ Bout’ on the album, it feels like a natural progression of that conversation. You can hear the spark of new love in the melody and floating electric guitar. The hook is irresistible and sweet. Ryland Fisher’s vocals are strong and sincere. The song’s great irony is that, if someone really stated their intentions in such an earnest way like this, you’d be begging them to take you home.

Take You Home

Using the same wide-open, Southwestern imagery he introduced us to in ‘Space,’ this troubadour’s prayer truly illuminates Ryland Fisher’s storytelling and lyrical bite. Every detail in this acoustic ballad points back to the anguish of the song: like the way his vocal wants to linger a bit in the lyric before, and he’s fighting to pull it forward. The visuals, emotion, and, ultimately, the frustration of ‘Outrun the Devil’ will be running through your memory long after you’re done listening.

Outrun The Devil

On first listen, ‘One Day’ is pensive and unfiltered, depressing and hopeful all at the same time. And the more you listen, the more the genius of the lyric shines through. Ryland Fisher and his co-writer, Max Flinn, have strung every word together with delightful intentionality. Lines like, “Pouring your memory over ice” while acoustic guitar shines through the melody prove that Fisher understands how to craft a damn fine country song. A fitting conclusion to Sleeping with Ghosts: Volume I, the production of ‘One Day’—especially at the very end—just might leave you with goosebumps.

One Day

Featuring an intoxicating melody and nostalgic lyrics that are effortlessly cool in every way, ‘Deja You’ is Ryland Fisher at his best. Reminiscent of the most pop-country song on his debut album, RYLAND: ‘Old Times’ Sake,’ ‘Deja You’ takes us back to the middle of nowhere, under the stars. A fond look back on young love, Fisher’s voice delivers excitement, confidence, and a hint of playfulness. Deja You

The most poetic song of the album, ‘Catch My Breath’ is straight up cinematic. Featuring a 12-string guitar, soothing synthesizer, and lines like, “Take me to the edge of the world, where all I can see is you,” this track feels like an epic film scene. While Fisher’s lyrics and vocal are dripping with sensuality, they’re so much more than that—they’re otherworldly. The unadulterated artistry and respect for melody on ‘Catch My Breath’ should entice fans of Ryan Adams, John Mayer, and Taylor Swift alike.

Catch My Breath

Once again, Ryland Fisher perfectly captures the emotions of a bitter breakup in his music. Rebuking advances from an ex who did the leaving, this is, without a doubt, the angriest we’ve ever heard him sing about a woman. Stripped down and a little haunting, it’s easy to see why ‘Goodbye Back’ made the cut for Sleeping with Ghosts: Volume I—but some R&B flavor makes it addictively sing-along-worthy. Bold and relatable with a whisper of revenge, you’ll put this one on the jukebox as soon as your ex walks in the bar.

Ryland Fisher is an American country rock singer-songwriter and producer. He has released seven studio albums through his own label since 2021. Ryland is also a billboard-charting songwriter, with millions of worldwide streams to his credit. His songs have been showcased on CMT, top-grossing world tours, and network television. 

Known for his relatable storytelling, heartfelt lyrics, and against-the-grain mindset, Ryland has been often compared to the likes of Eric Church, Brothers Osborne, and Kip Moore. Being an inherently honest and ‘real’ songwriter, he has found a great deal of inspiration from artists such as Ryan Adams, Butch Walker, and Bob Dylan. 

In late 2021, Fisher pivoted from being a heads-down staff songwriter on Music Row to releasing his debut album, ‘Ryland,’ produced by Danny Faillo of The Spark. The Black Sheep EP followed in August of 2022, with Adam Shoenfeld and James Russell producing. One month later in September of 2022, Ryland had released yet another album exclusively through his website (with a 2023 digital release), in the form of the melancholy, stripped-down ‘Sleeping with Ghosts: Volume 1.' Described as a pseudo-concept record, the nine new tracks on the album show a sonic departure from the first two albums and include reimagined versions of the billboard-charting Stephanie Quayle classic, ‘Whatcha Drinkin’ Bout’ and the John Stanislawski crooner, ‘Catch My Breath.’ 

In April 2023, Ryland released a fan-dedicated CD collection of outtakes and rarities in the form of 'Dust On The Tracks.' The compilation includes unreleased tracks and alternate versions and mixes not found on previous releases.

Following in quick succession, came the subsequent full-band rock-influenced ‘IV: Finding My Way Back Home,’ the pop-leaning ‘V: Heaven for the Weekend,’ and the awaited ‘Sleeping with Ghosts, Volume II.’

As a companion to songs within the growing catalog, Ryland has also released 2 self-produced music video collections titled, ‘Desperado: The Music Videos Volume I’ (and ‘Volume II’).

In addition to his own material, from 2017-2021 Fisher spent his days writing hundreds of songs for up-and-coming and established country music artists on Music Row in Nashville, TN. Artists that have recorded Ryland’s songs include Stephanie Quayle, Kurt Stevens, Belles, and Max Flinn, to name a few.
