There were little pieces and fragments which presented themselves to him every now and then. They were bittersweet in the sense that they reminded him of a more joyous and hopeful time but in the present he couldn’t quite recall what they were and how they connected to his world. Some said he had a fading memory but that was hard to fathom when he was blessed with the occasional flicker of her face.

He used to recall her every smile in his dreams, the way in which her lips curled and the depths to her laugh. Now it was only her eyes he could revisit from time to time.

Apparently it would all fade into nothing entirely with time. Yet there would always be that piece of her which lived on, dancing on the periphery of his mind.

YS is set to release a new album on Berlin based record label Pace Yourself – the record features an intelligent collection of Electronic music which meanders and wanders between Trip Hop, Bass, Breaks and beyond. This is perhaps the labels most accomplished release to date.

Putting a pigeon amongst the cats we are back with that good shit. An out of step, incidental artefact of peaceful sophistry: YS - Brutal Flower (2 x “12 LP). A no airs and graces piece of cool future-proof ambience. A modern ballad for brave young clubbers, local pubbers, slipstream warriors, and emotional doggers.

The distinctive aesthetic hallmarks of YS are all here: slabs of urban flavour from emotional interior; raw data straight from the interface. ‘Untethered’ and ‘Down’ are chopped-up cuts of searching R’n’B - jaded jams of lustful erasure. On the flipside, blunted desire lingers in ‘Fading
Memory’. Both hopeful and mourning: this is the lay of the land in Brutal Flowers sharing that rare strain of underground synesthesia best located in dark undercurrents of early Mo Wax.

The orchestral ambience of ‘Autumn OST’ is a potent stupor of end credit cinematics. Coming up for air. It feels young in an ancient sort of way: pure as first snow. And from here in the album unfolds with the patience, tranquility and the expansive poise of a work that is for now and always. Pulsating gently to assured ending with ‘Be Together’ - a flickering skyline, swarming with warm memories. In between there’s flashes of heartbreak reminiscent of Beltran's Ten Days of Blue and Blunt’s Stone Island (‘Look Up’ feels like a sort of spiritual successor to ‘Wake up’), that being said, when push comes to shove it only it ever flirts with its own reality.

An aesthetic reflection of a creative process that is delicate and restless. Created in the edges, where long distances, fast cities and global melancholia are wrought large. Burning the midnight oil Berlin-Singapore style: from real to reel. A sentimental exercise of modern faith by old
friends. With a nudge and a wink, Brutal Flowers is a (de)coded map of memories wavering with familiar intrigue. Patient listeners and the already initiated will be rewarded on re-visits - as playful & profound as you please, as deep as the heart.

The scathe that cuts is clean and deep. There are no sleight of hands to be found in this opus, only hearts are worn on the sleeve here.

Jesse Rae: anachronist Celtic funk warrior, renegade pioneer of funk, soul & dub (collaborating with Parliament, Funkadelic, Adrian Sherwood, Roger Troutman & the Sugarhill Gang); mad pedestrian-punk-poet, steeped so much in his own mythology he exists not only outside of time but in a universe of his own making; three time runner as an independent electoral candidate for Scottish Parliament, kitted-out as ever in ever in his Scots regal (kilt, helmet and claymore); the original trailblazer of the MTV Age (see 1985 music video ‘Over the Sea’, shot on top of the Brooklyn Bridge - aye, you read that correctly). And that’s just the tip of the iceberg folks. The Real McCoy. Prince of Scotland, king of hearts.

Appearing on wax for the first time, three cuts from the world's first ISDN virtual album, Jesse Rae’s seminal ‘Compression’ (CD) - which first dropped on Echo Beach in 1995. ‘Almost Ma Sel Again’ - a Scottish Burns-Funk classic intercut with a reading of Nigel Tranter’s The Wallace, a breathtaking (de)construction of emotional-electronic-free-funk; as deep as the heart that reaps it. ‘Virtual U’ - a mad cut of downtempo Scot/US G-Funk cum hip-hop interposed with answering machine messages from New Jersey’s own Bernie Worrell. ‘Switch Tae U’ - an orchestral and sublime bit of downtown house music. And of course, joining these three is a re-mastered cut of Jesse Rae’s 1982 cult classic ‘Rusha’ - a tripped out slab of linguistic psychedelia.

There we have it then: real shit indeed! Jesse Rae on Pace Yourself folks. For the already initiated and first timers, welcome to the Caledonian wormhole.

Sure to be an outsider anthem for Scotland @ the Euros this summer.

PREMIERE : Jesse Rae - Virtual 'U'

Sticking a dirty thumb in the eye of fate, our third collaboration sees our marrow deep family malarky turn official as Pace Yourself teams up with YS’s own imprint Erf Records for a split release. 

Burn is the second YS album and written as a direct follow-up album to Brutal Flowers. If their first album was an exercise in the incremental, a construction of poise and patience, Burn, should be taken way the fuck at it’s word: it quite literally finds catharsis in twisted reverse. Birthed out the malignant kick found in deconstruction and chaos. The hit is radical and instant: a new way for the world to go up in smoke. Cauterising infected suburban minds world over. 

Dunno quite what YS have been ingesting of late but this massively twisted LP touches on a host of gloriously fucked totemic underground sources while not sounding much like any of them. Struggling to conceal their tongues in their cheeks there’s an air of paranoia and proto-conspiracy theory. Leaving you feeling like you’ve stepped into a New World Order.  

Burn like other works by YS, is its own ritual beast. ‘Moth’, a track which has been knocking about the underground deejai circuit for many moons, is a real raw slice of stoner erotica that reeks of obsession and unrequited desire. Elsewhere, on tracks like ‘Switch’, ‘Trying’ and ‘Drift’ the throughline from Brutal Flowers can be heard. Underneath the driving heavy gravity the trademark emotional intimacies of YS linger: eternal recurrence, ghosts of static and shortwave, worn memories of the playful and painful sort. The brief moments where flashes of orchestral ambience get out from underneath the swagger are so pure, personal and unguarded that for a moment they leave you completely lonesome.    

A dubbed to death classic straight out of the annals of nowhere. A perfect postcard from oblivion. A bleak, bold and personally ferocious vision of tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow - Jack Anderson (@jankanderson_)
