A homage to drum&bass in the 90's and the mixes I used to record on tape (yes, TDK SA90 with 45 mins on each side). Cruzing around 162 bmp and heavily relying on releases from Good Looking, Moving Shadow, Ram Records and the mighty Metalheadz kru. Strictly Rollers - a drum&bass retrospective 94-99

February's label in focus special turns our attention to another massive label who had a big part to play in the rise of Jungle/Drum & Bass in the early 90's - Good Looking Records
Founded in 1991 by LTJ Bukem the label is best known for the atmospheric, jazz - influenced style of Drum & Bass known in many circles as "Intelligent Drum & Bass" 
With such an extensive library of tunes i am just going to pick a selection of releases from '92- '95 including tracks off sub-labels such as Nexus Records and Looking Good Records.

Drum & Bass Show Ep160  Label In Focus: GOOD LOOKING RECORDS '92-95

2025.03.07 High-Speed Soul vol.3 on UA four.valve

A deep two step drum and bass groove for this introspective and melancholy piece. I was kind of thinking about people from the city wanting to escape to the country, and vice versa, how their paths cross and how they never really escape where they came from. I've always been sort of fascinated by the oppressive and ironically claustrophobic nature of the wide open prairie, and I'm quite an afficionado of intense gothic westerns. My musical influences are of course Bukem, Source Direct, PFM, Doc Scott, Ray Keith and all the 90s legends and true originators.

The main piano comes from Grandeur, a Kontakt instument, which is backed up with a pad called Whisps which is part of a Thought-Forms preset pack for Korg Wavestation. It's an E minor 9 if I remember correctly. Drums and sub via TAL Drum and TAL Sampler. Everything produced in Cubase in 2025.

Journeys

A 90s ambient jungle feel with this one. Got that intelligent drum and bass feel to it, lush pads, bits of electric piano and flute, with a spacey space sample, which led to the Apollo Nine name. This is a break choppage track, I suppose my tracks are 50/50 breaks and programmed. I use TAL Drum for both techniques and it really excels at slicing and chopping breaks. It sort of continues on where Amigo leaves off, although to be fair Amigo does have some superb features not seen on TAL Drum. 

I also use TAL Sampler (SOOOOO glad I ditched Kontakt for my day to day sampling) and a variety of vintage modelled VSTs like Blue Beast, Orbhits, V Collection, Wavestation and others.

2025.03.13 High-Speed Soul vol. 4 on AT Euphonia

Recorded live last year on the infamous Riverdance Boat Party. Unfortunately, PFM was unable to play due to illness, and he recommended me as his replacement. Luckily, I had already purchased a ticket and was planning to attend anyway. With just two weeks to prepare, I went through my atmospheric back catalogue on vinyl and selected some of my favourite tracks from that golden mid-'90s era. This one is dedicated to MC Conrad and, of course, the mighty PFM.

While entering the new millennium 70Five got more into funk, disco, house, hip hop and bass music, evolving into his signature sound today.
