"For the longest time I've tried to sign animals to the label. Not as a joke, but as a genuine signifier that all life has creativity. So when I found Scott Ballard online, someone who has been experimenting with interfaces to have plants make music, I was over the moon. Scott has been using different plants and different midi equipment with the sprout midi interface which gets some very nice, varied and ingenious results.

Most of the tracks here are un-manipulated improvisations of the plants. The peace lily has some mean hooks and reacts to light and air with a jerky set of melodies. Some of the melodies return like a theme in a recording, some evaporate like the water the plants got. Scott manages to pull this all together with a great ear for the melodic and dramatic cues by his flora. As a bonus item you can find pictures of the sessions, but let's be honest, the music really does all the talking here! Think about this release the next time you water your plants..."

Finally listening to what my plants have to say. It's always unexpected and sometimes beautiful. 

Original version was made on an #OP1field during a trip to Melbourne when I was suffering from something food-borne. Came back home to find a #PlantWave, immediately hooked it up to my snake plant (see Instagram for the accompanying artist's portrait) and was able to add my plant's communication signals to this track. Quite a fun #jamuary jam.

The Things We Tell Ourselves was written with the help of some of my houseplants - capturing their bio-electric signals using a Plantwave and applying it to a mixture of hardware and software synths.

The Things We Tell Ourselves

An ambient aleatoric composition in C Major made using a Plantwave MIDI device. First, I place the electrode pads on a prayer plant (pictured), which then triggers MIDI notes on a VST pad synth in FL Studio, as well as on a bass-y mini hardware "Pocket Piano" synth, both of which play notes based on the translated bio-electric data it receives from the plant. This is recorded together with moving freeform guitar, vocals harmonies, and other real-time sampling, with minor touches of manual input from my end. I invite you to notice the direction it takes all on its own. When does it seem to align, and when does it seem to feel more clashy and discordant?

On August 18, 2024, I collaborated with yoga / reiki guide Geo and harpist JP for a live performance / guided meditation at Plantoem Kaimuki in #Honolulu #Hawaii. For my part, I used plant frequencies from a succulent using‪@PlantWave‬  -- which drove the bells and bass. I manually played in some leads and pads as well as a #TD3MO #acid #synth. This performance was composed on the fly -- so if there are any harsh frequencies, I blame the plant ;)

So sit back and relax (or grab a #yoga mat!) and enjoy some #ambientmusic sounds from that magical evening.

Plant music is a way of monitoring electrical signals of plants as sound. Through patented sonification technology, PlantWave measures biological changes within plants, graphs them as a wave and translates the wave into pitch.

With PlantWave, every single note you hear is a real-time expression of a shift in a plant. The more active a plant is at any particular moment, the more notes you’ll hear. When a plant is less active, it will often drone or even stop producing notes.

AYO is the solo project of danish composer, producer and sound artist Julie Schønherr Rosengreen.
AYO has been touring all over Europe since 2015. She has been playing in Morocco and The United States.
Some of the festivals she performed at includes Boom Festival, Ozora Festival, Freqs of Nature festival, Anthropos, Hadra and The Rendezvous - Tipper&Friends in Florida.
She has been performing for The Danish National Bank, at the beautiful Thorvaldsens Museum in Copenhagen, composed music for the theater play “Anna Walk With Me” and currently she is working both with installation art and performance art, making interactive and generative sound with plants, water and the human body. 
In 2020 she released her debut album Moto on Sofa Beats records. This was followed by several single & compilation releases on labels like Microcosmos records, Altar records and the danish female label SØNTH collective.
Her second album is soon due for release.

AYO strives to send a message of a more harmonious cohesion with nature, with each other and with ourselves. By incorporating nature elements into her performance, she tries to give nature back the voice it has lost. Giving the listener a chance to emphasise with it, by letting plants and water generate the sounds they hear, in an always evolving and generative pattern, which makes every performance new and unique.
Combining that with playing live hardware synths and her classical influenced compositions, the listener is presented with an experience of nature meeting electronics and the deeper emotional self -floating in to a world of dreamy and melodic soundscapes, dynamic pads, processed foleys and recorded ambience.
AYO has been playing and composing music since she was a child. With a background as a violinist and as a classical musician, the ambient genre was later a place where she felt at home and where she could express and unfold herself freely. 
She has a bachelor degree in electronic music and sound art from The Danish National Academy of Music. Here she has honed her expression and further developed her "voice" in order to be able to stand stronger with her message and vision.

Welcome to my unique world of production and sound.  This page contains mostly singer songwriter material, but also includes tracks from some of my other projects and field recordings.  I would consider myself a songwriter/ producer more than anything.  Making music and field recording are a big part of my life.  I use it to vent, process and have fun.  It's a hobby though.  If I had to depend on it for work, I think it would suck the life right out of it.  The only pressure on me now is me.  So, I pour my heart and soul into these tracks whether it be a sad love song or scathing noise, it's all music to me.
