The finished and longer version of the chiptune/8 bit sounds of "Five Times Four." I named the track from a dream that I had back in October of 2014 where the music was present. It had a quality to that of 8-bit synths found in the NES or the SID chip, and there was a tenner male voice that kept singing "five times four" with the music. I used a synth instead of actually singing during the process of making the track. The percussion is made with a combination of white noise and triangle waves. For chords and melodies, I use pulse waves at 12.5%, 25%,and 37.5% duty cycles, as well as sawtooth waves. (Recently I discovered that a 33.3% duty cycle is used more common than a 37.5, and sounds slightly different, but still very similar.)

Here I have a 5K potentiometer connected to an analog pin, and am parsing it's output to control the frequency of the square wave I'm sending to a speaker on one of my digital pins.

Arduino PWM

This is what's going on in the synthesizer demo:
0:00 -- Pure tones (sine waves) as a reference
0:12 -- Digital "pure" tones (square waves)
0:21 -- Pulse waves with different widths
0:26 -- Sweeping the pulse-width from square to an infinitely thin pulse and back
0:55 -- Modulating the pulse-width by a low-frequency triangle wave. The frequency of the modulating wave is varied from a few Hz just into the audible range and back.
1:29 -- Classic analog synth sound generated like the sound in the previous example but with the frequency of the modulating wave kept constant (at a few Hz)
1:46 -- Similar to the above example but with a second square wave an octave lower mixed in – to fatten things up. To achieve this with an arduino you would need two digital output pins and an external summing circuit.
