Vladimir Lenin established the Bolshevik Party in 1912 to seize control of the socialist movement in Russia and to plan and execute a violent revolution against the Tsar, and by 1917 he was successful in this attack. Also in 1917, on the eve of his victory, he wrote his thoughts about the organization of the state and how the revolution should proceed, both to box out his socialist competitors and to establish a theoretical baseline drawing from Marx and Engels for how to organize what became the Soviet Union. That document bears the title The State and Revolution, and in this episode of the New Discourses Podcast, host James Lindsay reads through the first chapter of Lenin's key work to expose to you what Bolshevik Communists think a state exists to do: repression. Plusieurs groupes communautaires, dont la Ligue des droits et libertés, ont dénoncé mardi devant l'Hôtel de ville le profilage racial exercé, selon eux, par le Service de police de la ville de Québec. Ils demandent une enquête publique indépendante et l’interdiction du port du symbole «Thin Blue Line» par les agents des forces de l’ordre. Une requête appuyée par les partis d’opposition.

Mardi 19 novembre, la justice hongkongaise a condamné des manifestants pro-démocratie, jusqu’à 10 ans d’emprisonnement pour certains. Le catholique Jimmy Lai, accusé de conspiration, encourt la prison à vie. Il aurait diffusé des publications jugées séditieuses via son journal Apple Daily. Laurence Bolomey parle de cette répression qui touche notamment les chrétiens avec Tobias Brandner, pasteur zurichois, aumônier de prison à Hong-Kong.

We've got a jam packed episode, as workers all around the world are on the move. First we've got headlines covering stories in Germany, South Korea, California and Florida. For our first main story, workers at a Whole Foods in Philadelphia filed to unionize this week, in another major effort to push back against the exploitation of the Bezos empire. Also in Philly this week, city workers in three unions reached new agreements with significant wages and safety protections. We catch up with a flurry of recent incidents of crackdowns on anti-genocide speech by bosses and universities across the US. We also follow up with striking teachers in Massachusetts, where one strike has been settled and two continue. Canada Post workers also continued their strike this week, we discuss the conditions that led us here. Finally, the UAW made another major announcement this week that a majority of workers at Ford's new EV battery plant in Kentucky have signed cards to unionize.

Carlos Ernesto Choc ist Journalist, ist Maya Qèqchi und stammt aus der Stadt El Estor am Ausgang des Izabal-Sees im Osten Guatemalas. Er war am Projekt „Green Blood Mining Secrets“ beteiligt. Eine Studie über die Umweltschäden durch die Nickel Minen in Guatemala. Seine Berichte wurden in verschiedenen europäischen Medien veröffentlicht. Er ist Teil des internationalen Journalisten Netzwerkes Forbidden Stories mit Sitz in Paris. Gemeinsam mit unserem Kollegen Martin Schäfer von der LN trafen wir uns mit ihm Anfang Dezember 2024 zu einem Gespräch in unserem Berliner Büro, um uns über das Thema Comunity Journalismus und freie Medien auszutauschen.

"Arbitrary arrest and detention have become a permanent fixture of the repressive tactics of Belarusian authorities," Karinna Moskalenko, Chair of the Group of Independent Experts on Belarus told the Human Right Council on Wednesday. 

The experts' mandate consisted of documenting instances of torture and human rights violations in the country, including in prisons.  

Some of the violations described in a new report "amount to the crimes against humanity of political persecution and imprisonment", added Ms. Moskalenko, who works in an independent capacity and is not a UN staff member.

Die Klimabewegung sieht sich mit immer zahlreicheren und härteren Urteilen konfrontiert. Solidarische Strukturen unterstützen Aktivist*innen im Umgang mit der Strafverfolgung, aber schlussendlich stellt sich vermehrt die Frage, wie mit Gefängnisstrafen umzugehen ist. Sei es, weil konkret Haftstrafen gegen Klimaaktivist*innen verhängt werden, oder weil sich Einzelne entscheiden, oder aus finanzieller Not keine Wahl haben, ihre Geldstrafe in eine Ersatzfreiheitsstrafe umzuwandeln. 
In diesem Beitrag spreche ich mit Mirjam Herrmann, Klimaaktivistin und Mitglied von "Legal-Strukturen" für politisch Aktive. Sie hat ihre erste Erfahrung mit einer solchen Ersatzfreiheitsstrafe gemacht, und erzählt darüber wie sie sich darauf vorbereitet hat und was ihr geholfen hat, mit der Situation umzugehen. 
Ausserdem erzählt Lilly Schubert vom Verein "Rückendeckung für eine aktive Zivilgesellschaft", wie sie Aktivist*innen beraten und unterstützen und ihnen somit einen längerfristigen Aktivismus ermöglichen.

This lecture discusses key ideas from the 20th century German philosopher, sociologist of knowledge, and phenomenologist, Max Scheler's work Ressentiment, which provides an interpretation of Friedrich Nietzsche's concept of that same name. It focuses on  the connection Scheler analyses between repression and ressentiment. The repression is complex, beginning with repression of the original object of the emotion and leading to changing the emotion and directing it inward to the person feeling it.
