This special episode, part of our Student Voice initiative, is dedicated to supporting Year 10 and 11 students as they navigate the January mock examination cycle.

Aligned closely with the IGCSE curriculum, the podcast focuses on exam revision techniques and addresses concerns raised by students about their preparation process. To provide practical advice, two former IGCSE students, Izze and Riya, joined the discussion. Drawing on their personal experiences, they offered valuable insights into effective revision strategies, shared tips for managing stress, and highlighted common pitfalls to avoid during exam prep.

Miniatures is the podcast of the ERC-funded ‘Dictatorship as Experience’ project at the University of St Andrews. Miniatures Episode 19: Education for Ordinary People: Mass Education and the Everyday with Dr Laura Carter

Programming has been presented as a way for students to learn mathematics. In his licentiate thesis, David Taub challenges this idea by investigating if and how it works. In his study, groups of Swedish secondary school students, most of them novice programmers, were observed and interviewed as they conducted programming tasks in the classroom.
The findings indicate that although it seems possible for the act of programming itself to help students construct new mathematical concepts, it is unlikely to be an effective classroom strategy. In our conversation, David explains that the cognitive difficulties novice programmers encountered when writing programs became an obstacle to learning new mathematics as well as dramatically increasing the time needed to complete apparently simple tasks.
