Topic and Guests: As we commence Women's History Month, Amara Evering radio journalist, writer, and storyteller shares different women’s life stories and experiences in their own voices.  Using her podcast “For Ama” Amara Evering explores the topic of healing through different women’s life stories and experiences. The series addresses the topic of healing through various life stories, from elders to young women and women from different economic and cultural backgrounds.  The series is produced by Amara Evering and Armand Jennings (U.S producer) and Chris Wayne (in Namibia).  The narrator is Lahja Haufiku.

Amara Evering is a radio journalist, writer, and storyteller. She’s been recognized for her coverage of reparations programs, Black international struggles, and the experiences of Black women and girls. She interviewed legendary poet Sonia Sanchez along with a host of prominent activists, scholars, and writers. Her writings about gentrification were featured in The Contemporary magazine, among other publications.  She has worked as a producer and writer for WPFW FM news department and is the current recipient of the Alice Rowan Swanson Fellowship. AfricaNow! March 22, 2023 Effects of Cyclone Freddy on Malawi and Mozambique 

Topic and Guests: Cyclone Freddy which has devastated the south-east African countries of Madagascar, Malawi and Mozambique started in early February this year and continued to mid-March is the longest lasting cyclone in recorded history.  It initially made landfall on February 21 in Madagascar then Mozambique.  Then Cyclone Freddy picked more strength over the Indian Ocean and made its second arrival on Mozambique and Malawi in early March.  The second wave of Cyclone Freddy was more devastating causing hundreds of thousands displaced, hundreds killed and tremendous damage to the countries’ infrastructure.  Over 500 people have died in three south-east African countries of Madagascar, Malawi, and Mozambique.  Malawi has been impacted the most from Cyclone Freddy and the country’s President Lazarus Chakwera has declared a 14-day national mourning period.  According to newspaper reports Malawi’s Department of Disaster Management stated that as of March 21, the death toll is 499; and 508,288 people are displaced (Government banks on partners, by Bobby Kabango, The Nation, March 22, 2023 https://mwnation.com/government-banks-on-partners/).  

Yesterday I had conversations on the effects of Cyclone Freddy on Malawi and Mozambique with: Costly Chanza, Director of Town Planning and Estates Services, Blantyre City Council in Malawi; Estacio Valoi, an investigative journalist based in Mozambique and is with the Centre for Investigative Journalism (CIJ); and Mathews Malata, Jr., environmental rights activist and President of the Association of Environmental Journalists of Malawi.

AfricaNow! Mar. 29, 2023 Southern Africa Liberation Movements with Prexy Nesbitt

In 1898, Pirbhai, a teenage boy looking for work, is taken from his village in India to labor for the British on the East African Railway. Far from home, Pirbhai commits a brutal act in the name of survival that will haunt him and his family for years to come.

Berlin‘s original tropical music pioneer DJ Nomad has been a collector of South African and Zimbabwean music for over 30 years. 
Berlin had due to it‘s very political music scene of the 80‘s close ties to south africa. Several anti-apartheid labels were based in Berlin, so there never was a shortage of southern African music in the city. Young Nomad fell in love with the fierceness, pride and love that the music from the townships radiated
Songs that spoke of the daily struggles of  the apartheid : living in township ghettos, working hard labour jobs, alcoholism, domestic violence and the mapantsulas - the street gangsters but also about love, romance and the hope for an evolution(which was soon to come).

This mix focuses on exactly that time period, the pre- revolutionary 60‘s and 70‘s before Kwaito & Bubblegum reflected a new way of life. It‘s a testament of life in the townships in the era of township jive, township soul and the early beginning of disco It travels from the townships to the north too the war torn city of Harare, that was still in the midst of the second "Chimurenga“  - the great Zimbabwe Rhodesian war for Independance. Later a whole genre of guitar heavy music from that area - showcased in the second half of the mix- was named after that conflict.

South African & Zimbabwean music from that certain era is loaded with history of the struggle for a better, more beautiful life. A longing for peace, love and equality. It was also a solace and source of  power to cope until those changes manifest.That‘s why it is the lifeblood of the south

Los sistemas alimentarios de todo el mundo se enfrentan a retos sociales, nutricionales y medioambientales graves, y deben evolucionar para cumplir nuevos y diversos objetivos interrelacionados. A medida las políticas públicas que se remodelan para apoyar esta transformación, hay que tener en cuenta dos factores fundamentales: 

(1) Se necesitan innovaciones tecnológicas que permitan satisfacer la demanda de una mayor productividad de forma respetuosa con el medioambiente.

(2) Es esencial allanar el camino de los flujos comerciales internacionales, y esto requiere una mejora en las normas comerciales que permita facilitar los flujos desde los países con el mayor potencial de crecimiento de la oferta —sobre la base de sistemas de producción respetuosos con el medioambiente— hacia aquellos que presentan las mayores limitaciones para alcanzar la autosuficiencia alimentaria.

Ir tras estos objetivos puede suponer un reto importante para los países en desarrollo, que tendrán que ajustar y transformar sus prácticas de producción y distribución, en particular aquellos que participan activamente en el comercio de alimentos. En el Cono Sur de Sudamérica, que se ha convertido en la mayor región exportadora neta de alimentos del mundo, la atención a estas cuestiones debe ser primordial.

Para responder a ello, el Programa para América Latina y el Caribe del IFPRI lanza la publicación De la granja a la mesa: Sistemas agroalimentarios y retos comerciales en el Cono Sur. Este trabajo analítico pretende informar a los procesos políticos para la transformación del sistema alimentario regional del Cono Sur.

Los oradores presentarán un análisis de los principales retos a los que se enfrentan los sistemas agroalimentarios nacionales del Cono Sur, especialmente en lo relacionado con normativas y barreras nuevas que pueden afectar al comercio internacional y las condiciones para la exportación. También debatirán cómo el sistema alimentario regional podría contribuir mejor al sistema alimentario mundial a través del comercio, la inversión, el desarrollo de cadenas de valor y la transferencia de tecnología.

After the Second World War, national self-determination became a recognized international norm, yet it only extended to former colonies. Groups within postcolonial states that made alternative sovereign claims were disregarded or actively suppressed. This talk showcases their contested histories, highlighting little-known regions in South Asia and Southern Africa, marginalized individuals, and their hidden (or lost) archives. Personal connections linked disparate nationalist struggles across the globe through advocacy networks. However, these advocates had their own agendas and allegiances, which could undermine the autonomy of the claimants they supported. 

This webinar features material from Lydia Walker’s new book, "States-in-Waiting" (Cambridge, 2024) which illuminates the unfinished and improvised ways that the state-centric international system replaced empire, which left certain claims of sovereignty perpetually awaiting recognition. Postwar Decolonization and its Discontents

A few months ago, I did an interview on the program with Sarah and Derek Solomon, who are safari guides in southern Africa. If you listened to that episode, you may recall that their work is pretty unique. First, in addition to doing traditional photo and wildlife viewing safaris, they also do sound safaris, usually at night. Their safari guests can’t see the animals, but they can hear them, thanks to special microphones mounted on the front of the safari vehicle and headphones at each seat.

Then, they met a young South African filmmaker who was producing a documentary about a remarkable young South African girl, blind since birth, and her experiences of seeing the world through sound. Brett, the filmmaker, needed a safari guide to help this young girl “see” African wildlife in her own way—with her ears, rather than with her eyes. Sarah and Derek were perfect for the job.

The film, “Call of the Wild,” has been a big hit at film festivals ever since its release. But equally important is the impact that the experience has had on Sarah and Derek. After working with Brett, and the young girl, Annika, A thought struck them: Why not offer sound safaris for people who can’t see? 

Well, after a great deal of effort and planning, their idea has become a reality. I reached out, and asked them to give me an update on how things are going.
