From breaking through in the early 90s right when things were still done wild, helming the legendary Lost club nights from 1992 onward, onto becoming a pioneering figure of the UK's underground, it's safe to say Steve Bicknell ticks all the boxes of a self-made myth in the scene. Tirelessly pushing the boundaries of techno as we know it, the British don has been carving out his name in gold letters amongst the pantheon of DJs capable to evolve and transcend both themselves and their audience through the cathartic power of music. Always a step ahead, Bicknell treats us to two hours of resolutely immersive and achingly powerful soul-search, seamlessly criss-crossing our brains with his top-of-the-range anti-bullshit techno medicine. Eelco’s Techno mixtape Pt.1

From London’s inner suburbs comes this next guest, a through and through veteran of UK techno whose touch has left a lasting mark on the world around him. Steve Bicknell’s early days were spent in the intoxicating worlds of dub, reggae, acid, DIY warehouse parties and pirate radio, an auspicious mix of references that would inspire him to make music of his own. After a string of residencies at the UK’s then most influential parties, he launched his own series with creative collaborator Sheree Rashit: LOST. These legendary gatherings brought together names like Plaid, Jeff Mills, Juan Atkins, Robert Leiner, Basic Channel, and a wider array of future techno hegemons. This was swiftly succeeded with the duo’s launch of imprint Cosmic Records, whose triumph went on to spawn another three successors: LOST (early provider of Bicknell’s dancefloor sounds), Clubtracks (for Chicago-leaning fare) and ID(entity) (a channel for the work of well established music-makers who wanted to release under a secret alias). A nine-year pause in productions came to a halt in the mid 2010s with Steve’s most recent label, 6dimensions, an exploration in sound and the whole spectrum of human emotion. Finally, 2017 saw Steve team up with Luke Slater and David Sumner under the LSD sobriquet, a force for the creation of ‘lysergic machine music’, heavily danceable stuff (just ask ADE, Dekmantel, Awakenings). With a story as full and enduring as Steve’s there’s much to pull from, and only experience in the flesh could attest to the depth and scope of his musical evolution, but it’s clear that the voice he has honed has only become louder and more refined. It’s a techno that’s fully embodied, a blistering percussive barrage that invokes something profoundly human and fundamental. Bassiani Podcast 217 is just a taste of what Steve has to offer, a window onto a world of sound he’s meticulously crafted for over three decades: masterfully layered and piercing sounds that shimmer and relentlessly rise in lockstep with a formidable 4/4 beat.

I'd been wanting to see if I could, coherently and… meaningfully (without undue manner…ism…s ;] ), mix a group of tracks from my collection that range pretty widely in tempo (for techno, or for how I play techno at least :) and intensity (and feel, and flavour) yet all share in some measure (however small, or subtle) a quality that…

…I (even I! ;) find hard to articulate. Like a wide clear night sky in the country (or desert, I imagine; I've not - yet - been :), deep black and riotous with stars, a bit dizzying and delicately dazzling, too vast to really comprehend and so instilling just the right (read: manageable :) amount of awe... is the best I can do. (In my collection, I tag these tracks 'cosmic', with various qualifiers, and for want of a less… used-and-oft-abused-yet-actually-literally-useful term: cosmic, as in, of the cosmos… ;D)

Wow, I've talked it up rather a lot! Anyway... Like all good psycho-cosmo-nautical trips (! ;), okay, journeys, this one has its moment(um)s and mean(der)ings… may range far, but… isn't long! Come along :)

Eelco’s taste in music has always been eclectic. He has been passionate about music from an early age, drawn to a wide range of sounds, from indie, rock, metal, jazz to hip-hop and drum & bass. But everything changed when he experienced his first AWAKENINGS techno party in Amsterdam over 20 years ago. That day, he had an epiphany! The pulsating energy, the hypnotic rhythms they were a calling.
From that moment on, he became addicted to the raw, driving force of Techno and Electro.
"The first time I stepped into a warehouse and FELT that hard bass, those hissing  sharp hi-hats, and the deep, hypnotic groove of proper Techno, I knew I had come home!"

Helloo!

It's been a long time, and quiet at that from my end. Just having a fallow spell and/or mojo lull (depending on the day :), managing my mind and health (or not - ditto ;), musing and meandering and mimimalising... And while that's great / necessary (! :), I've found it a little unsettling to have this subside into dormancy... So it's fortunate that, in my inactivity, I've amassed a minor backlog of sets to upload - something fresh, however aged :D
