More than synonymous with happiness, Joy (Anonymous) were born out of a series of pop-up parties in London during COVID, inspiring excitement and hope in a time when both were in short supply and bringing people together through community and music. @joyanonymous have now taken that ethos and experience globally, known for their meet ups in cities across the world - whether a pop up on the River Seine in Paris or a late night club in Sao Paolo, the one thing that remains constant is the incredible reaction they receive throughout the electronic music community. Application mix from Jesse Blake for the Strawberry Fields DJ Competition, celebrating their amazing achievement of 15 years on the Murray. So much inspiration for my mixing and sound has stemmed from attending the Strawberry Fields over the years, from the beautiful landscape to the amazing performances that come with it. Thanks strawbs and PBS 106.7FM for the opportunity.

For this mix, I've tried to envision how I would open things up, trying to incorporate the euphoric complexities of progressive house for a smooth start, and delving into some fun PowerHouse towards the tail end of the set. Paying homage to tunes from recent artists Alex Kassian, Maruwa, and Jex Opolis as well as past producers Tocayo and Rozalla.

Strawberry Fields holds a special place in my heart ~ a festival where I've gathered countless memories over the years, dancing among the gumtrees on the Murray to the sounds of many of my favourite artists. This afro-melodic-housey mix is a celebration of those moments and the unforgettable sets from some of my faves, including andhim, Monkey Safari, Super Flu and Lovebirds ~ all of whom have made Strawberry Fields truly magical. I've stitched together a selection of 90s American House, with a touch of acid, and if you're sharp, you might spot a bit of South African Kwaito. Leave a comment if you can. I've also woven in Jamie XX's latest track with Honey Dijon - fresh off the press earlier this year. I promise you'll be dancing and if you're not bopping your head by the hour mark, just wait a few more seconds until you recognise that iconic (and sometimes annoying) 80s riff from a contemporaneous remake of What Is Love, by the one and only Alex Kassian.

Here are the 10 records I selected for the Strawberry Fields 2024 application mix - vinyl only. Since this is for an opening set, I’ve chosen tracks that feel right for the time of day and the Australian bush environment—while still maintaining groove and energy to get people dancing.

Opening a festival the size of Strawberry Fields is no easy task. An opening set needs to lay the foundation for what’s to come without revealing too much, while still keeping the excitement alive. I aimed to capture the full festival experience in this mix.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I did putting it together.

I'm Isha (Ish Anja) - Melbourne, AU. I like to carry sounds that give others a feeling of familiarity and splash of colour. Whichever journey can create something special for those who feel called to these sounds :)

I play regularly around Melbourne and have supported some great artists including Claudio PRC, Christian Smith, Tensal, Laura King, Eric Powell, Township Rebellion and more.

My production style typically involves emotive/hypnotic melodies, tough kicks and my vocals. During my sets, my number one priority is taking people on a journey by weaving the different parts of myself into sound. This includes combining my darker hypnotic/melodic elements with a bit of breakbeats, to symbolise the coexistence of self acceptance and polarity between dark and light in life. 

Through sound, we can simply just be. <3
