The IFY Education students at the University of Sunderland will demystify 'embedding', one concept at a time. They will get "under the covers" with the nitty gritty side of being in the classroom.

Today, our students are going to discuss the challenges of embedding the UN's Sustainable Development Goals, and how they as aspiring educators can get the job done.

Sustainable development in education allows every human being to acquire the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values necessary to develop a sustainable future. Integrating sustainable development benefits students and society, to promote social equity, and encourages economic wellbeing. 

Our guest today, who will develop our students' knowledge of embedding education for sustainable development, is Andrea Brown: Senior Lecturer at the School of Education, at the University of Sunderland.

Andrea has enjoyed a varied career, having worked in marketing, operations, and training, before education. Andrea has taught internationally, as well as across the 3rd sector, further education, and higher education in the UK. Such diverse experience is invaluable for her students, as it brings to life the reality of working as an educator. She is passionate about embedding sustainable education in her own teaching and learning, and is now championing this across the Faculty of Education and Society at the University of Sunderland.

In Bed With Embedding - Sustainable Development Goals

Born in Brazil to German parents, Achim Steiner knows first hand the power of cultural exchange to drive international cooperation. Now head of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), he leads global efforts to secure a better future for our planet and its people.

“The clearest lesson from 50 years of modern development thinking is don't try and just pick one aspect and put all your eggs in that basket. Society is complex, development is about choices. And you will either get them right and succeed or you will fall apart.” 

Across the world, the UN supports efforts to end poverty, tackle climate change, and break barriers to progress and development. Yet brutal conflicts can reverse decades of progress in a few short months. In this episode, Achim Steiner reflects on the thorniest challenges facing humanity, on his hopes for a fairer, cleaner future, and on the vital lessons he learned in rural Pakistan.

Gertrude Noden, a long-time human rights educator and the founder of the organization "Words into Deeds" describes the recent trip she and her husband Drew took to Uganda. Words into Deeds has been supporting the education and work skills of girls and women in Uganda, especially the most vulnerable of them. The work is framed through the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) addressing Goals #4 (quality education), #5 (gender equity), #6 (water, sanitation and hygiene), and #8 (decent work and economic growth). Children have been producing liquid soap and sewn reusable sanitary napkins. Girls and young women who have suffered from domestic and sexual violence have learned literacy and numeracy and have had access to psycho-social therapy. Gertrude talks about the complexity of organizing additional schools.

It is with great pleasure that I welcome back into the Virtual Studio, Homi Kharas. I wanted to explore with him the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the halfway point for their completion. I was looking for his assessment of current progress especially after he, John W McArthur, and Odera Onyechi published a new Report at Brookings: “How is the world doing on the SDGs? Four tests and eight findings”. 

Also, I wanted to get his views of what we can expect at the upcoming UN Summit of the Future, scheduled for September 22nd and 23rd in New York during the High Level Panel Week. This Summit is the second of two Summits called for by the current UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. 

Homi is a senior fellow in the Center for Sustainable Development, housed in the Global Economy and Development program at Brookings. In that capacity, he studies policies and trends influencing developing countries, including aid to poor countries, the emergence of the middle class, and global governance and the G20.

His most recent co-authored/edited books are: “The Rise of the Middle Class: How the Search for the Good Life Can Change the World” (2023), “Breakthrough: The Promise of Frontier Technologies for Sustainable Development” edited with John McArthur and Izumi Ohno (2022) and “Leave No One Behind: From Summits to Solutions: Time for Specifics on the Sustainable Development Goals" edited with John McArthur and Izumi Ohno (2019).
