Do you feel like your thyroid medication just isn’t working as it should? Do you still have symptoms of low thyroid even though you are taking your thyroid medication faithfully? It could be that your dose is just not high enough and that you need to increase it. 

This problem is actually more common than you might think. 

It’s been estimated that as many as 25-30% of thyroid patients may be taking too much thyroid medication at any given time. We don’t know the numbers for how many people are not taking enough but it’s probably safe to assume that it’s at least equal to the number of people taking too much. 

This promotes a big problem for thyroid patients because you simply won’t feel better if your dose is not sufficient. 

The good news? There are ways to determine just based on your symptoms if your dose is too low. 

Let’s talk about those right now. 

Signs that your thyroid medication dose is too low include:

#1. Gaining weight despite taking your thyroid medication every day
#2. Fatigue that is getting worse or doesn’t get better
#3. Hair loss that either gets worse or persists
#4. Continued constipation (may get slightly better or worse)
#5. Cold intolerance that persists
#6. Continued menstrual problems (may also get worse with some thyroid medication)
#7. Depression and/or anxiety that persists or get worse
#8. Pain in the joints/muscles
#9. Dry skin

Signs Your Thyroid Medication is Too Low

A new study of over 600,000 thyroid patients from Taiwan suggested that thyroid patients taking levothyroxine have a 50% increased risk of developing cancer at any site. While concerning, the results of this study certainly do not prove that levothyroxine causes cancer but every thyroid patient taking levothyroxine should be aware of this potential connection.

This information is not meant to cause fear or alarm but to simply break down this study, explain some of the issues with the study, and some of the key takeaways. 

Let’s start with the problems first:

#1. The study was retrospective. Retrospective studies look backward in time at existing data and can show a correlation between things but do not necessarily prove causation. This is very important because many thyroid patients suffer from conditions that can also increase cancer risk and these must be taken into account. 

#2. More research is still needed before any definitive conclusion is made. This is only one study and before any claim can be definitely made, there must be other studies that account for the issues listed above. 

#3. We don’t have information on other thyroid medications. This study only took into account levothyroxine and didn’t account for other thyroid medications that may be better for thyroid management such as NDT formulations. 

#4. Even though levothyroxine is synthetic, it is still bioidentical. The fact that levothyroxine is body identical or bioidentical is good because it means it’s less likely to result in cancer. Bioidentical hormones can impact cancer risk but typically only if they are dosed incorrectly (either too much or too little). 

Some key takeaways and lessons from this study include:

#1. Don’t take thyroid medication unless you need it! I have many articles and videos which can help you determine if you are someone that may be able to get off of their thyroid medication. 

#2. It may be difficult for some thyroid patients to get thyroid medication from here on out. This can be both a good and a bad thing. 

#3. Instead of getting worried about what thyroid medication you are taking, focus more on the dose of that medication. Focus more on optimizing your free thyroid hormone levels as that will probably have the biggest impact on your risk of cancer. 

#4. Even if you can’t control your thyroid medication you can still control other factors which can influence your own personal risk of cancer. Eating healthy whole foods, avoiding alcohol, exercising regularly, avoiding smoking, and so on can all impact your cancer risk.

Does Levothyroxine Cause Cancer? Study of Over 600,000 Thyroid Patients Explained

Did you know that with the clever use of some over-the-counter supplements and one prescription medication you can re-create all of the benefits found in natural desiccated thyroid hormone formulas?

Doing this allows you to make whatever thyroid medication you are using even more effective by mimicking what makes NDT so great. Why is this important? Because when Nature-throid and WP Thyroid were removed from the market, there were a ton of thyroid patients who started doing poorly when they were transitioned over. In addition, we have a ton of thyroid patients using levothyroxine who are still experiencing low thyroid symptoms. 

The tips and tricks I’m about to share assume that you are starting with a levothyroxine base but all of these tricks can be applied to any thyroid medication including NDT and T3 formulations. 

Step #1. Add a thyroid glandular. Using a thyroid glandular allows to benefit from the proteins, enzymes, and pro-hormones naturally found in NDT. 

Step #2. Add T2 thyroid hormone. NDT contains a small amount of T2 thyroid hormone which you can get in supplement form. 

Step #3. Add T3 thyroid hormone. NDT contains both T4 and T3 thyroid hormone which means you’ll need to add T3 to your base of levothyroxine to mimic it. 

(Optional) Step #4. Add an iodine supplement. NDT contains about 130mcg of iodine per grain so if you are trying to re-create NDT you will want to take this iodine component into account.

Create Your Own Natural Desiccated Thyroid Blend in 4 Steps

Early research suggests that up to 30% of thyroid patients currently taking thyroid medication may not need it. That’s great and all but what does that mean for you? How can you tell if you are in that lucky 30%? Well, if you’ve ever wondered about that I’ve got some good news for you:

We have some signs that, if present, indicate that you have a higher likelihood of getting off of your thyroid medication. In addition to these positive signs, we also have some negative ones as well and today I’m going to go over both.

Before we jump in, you should be aware that this data is still emerging so it’s subject to change as we get more information. If it does change then you can bet I will provide you with that updated information but, for now, this is what we have. 

These positive signs indicate you have a higher likelihood of getting off and staying off of thyroid medication: 

- If you’ve been using thyroid medication for less than 4 years. 
- If you had a normal free T4 on diagnosis. 
- If your current TSH is less than 1.8. 
- If you are taking a low dose of thyroid medication (usually less than 50 mcg).
- If you are a woman (women are 2x more likely to get off their thyroid medication).

These are unfavorable signs: 

- If you have a heterogenous thyroid on ultrasound.
- If you have positive thyroid peroxidase antibodies with diffuse echogenicity on thyroid ultrasound.
- If your TSH was greater than 8 at the time of diagnosis.
- If your treated TSH is greater than 9.
- If you were diagnosed at a young age.
- If you had a positive thyroglobulin antibody level at the time of diagnosis. 

The presence or absence of any of these signs doesn’t guarantee anything so don’t get discouraged if you have a lot of negative signs and few positive signs.

Signs You Can Stop Taking Thyroid Medication

Ever wonder what is actually in levothyroxine? This medication is one of the most prescribed medications in the United States and yet so many people have no idea what they are actually consuming every day. 

Understanding what’s in this medication is important because some of the ingredients may be causing you problems. 

When it comes to thyroid medications there are two types of ingredients you should be aware of: 

1. Active ingredients
And 2. Inactive ingredients

The active ingredients are usually not the problem for most thyroid patients because this component is dose dependent. You are either taking enough or you aren’t. 

But this isn’t true for the inactive ingredients. These ingredients can cause hypersensitivity reactions regardless of the dose and may lead to a host of symptoms. 

The active ingredients found in levothyroxine include: thyroxine. 
The inactive ingredients include: magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, colloidal silicone dioxide, sodium starch glycolate, and color additives depending on the strength and dose you are taking. 

If you are not doing well on your thyroid medication then take a look at these ingredients and see if they are causing issues. If they are, you may benefit from switching to a cleaner thyroid medication like Tirosint.

Levothyroxine Ingredients: These May Surprise You

Millions of prescriptions of thyroid medication will be filled this year and the vast majority of them will be for levothyroxine.

Of those millions, only about 10% or so will go to a class of thyroid medication called natural desiccated thyroid. 

Despite being only 10% of all prescriptions, thyroid patients have a clear preference for it. 

Not only does it help with weight loss, but it also can help better control thyroid symptoms based on surveys of thyroid patients. 

There’s only one problem: 

Doctors don’t like to prescribe it. 

Unfortunately, they are under the impression that NDT is an inferior medication to levothyroxine which is why today, I’m busting these NDT myths. 

Here they are, in no particular order: 

1. Claim #1: Taking NDT Will Cause Bone Loss & Heart Problems
Long-term studies show this isn’t true PROVIDED you are not taking more than you need. 

2. Claim #2: Newer Synthetic Medications Are More Effective
The idea here is that NDT may cause side effects because of its T3 content. This may happen, but it’s also the reason that people prefer NDT... because it works. 

3. Claim #3: NDT is Not FDA-Approved 
This is true but irrelevant. NDT has been use since 1890 so it was grandfathered into the FDAs newer requirements. 

4. Claim #4: NDT is Old-Fashioned 
This isn’t true either as all thyroid medications contain the same bio-identical thyroid hormones. The same T4 that is found in levothyroxine is also found in NDT. 

5. Claim #5: Taking NDT Will Cause Mad Cow Disease 
NDT comes from pigs (not cows), and there’s never been a reported case of Mad Cow disease in the US. 

6. Claim #6: Taking NDT Will Increase Thyroid Antibodies 
This is theoretical and may be a problem for a rare subset of people, but not enough to warrant that everyone avoids it. 

Claim #7: NDT Isn’t A Real Medication Because it Can Be Purchased Over The Counter
NDT is not the same thing as over-the-counter thyroid glandulars which is what this claim confuses.

What Doctors Get Wrong About NDT Thyroid Medication

If levothyroxine contains thyroid hormones and thyroid hormones control metabolism, shouldn’t taking levothyroxine help with weight loss? You would think so, but that’s not what happens in the real world. 

Instead, we have studies and anecdotal experience that show that patients taking levothyroxine experience no positive benefits to their weight. And worse than this, some actually experience weight GAIN. 

But how can this occur? 

It has everything to do with the type of thyroid hormone found in levothyroxine and what that thyroid hormone means for the body. Levothyroxine and Synthroid contain the thyroid hormone T4, which is inactive by itself. It’s not until the body converts it into the active thyroid hormone T3 that it becomes usable. 

In a perfect world, everyone would be able to convert this hormone readily but that’s not the world we live in. 

Which is why studies show that people who take other more active thyroid hormones do experience the weight loss you’d expect to see from levothyroxine (but don’t). 

This doesn’t mean levothyroxine is a bad medication, but it does mean that you shouldn’t rely on it to help with weight loss. But you can get where you need to be by using a combination of thyroid hormones including: 

T4, T3, and T2. 

Recommendations for each (which mimics the healthy production of the thyroid gland) include: 

80-100 mcg of T4 
5-20 mcg of T3
100-200 mcg of T2

This combination of thyroid hormones is much more powerful than just taking levothyroxine alone and can help you lose weight with minimal effort.

This Thyroid Medication CAUSES Weight Gain

I am so excited to bring you my friend and colleague Paul Robinson in this podcast episode to discuss the many problems with the current ways we treat and test for low thyroid or hypothyroidism. Paul also shared some of his story with us and how being undertreated for hypothyroidism basically destroyed his life. We also got into the specifics of T4, T3 and Reverse T3 to hopefully help you understand and take more control of your thyroid and health issues. And what do you do if your doctor won't help you. Paul Robinson became ill with hypothyroidism in his late twenties. Over the next thirty-plus years, Paul accumulated a wealth of knowledge on thyroid and adrenal dysfunction. His scientific background enabled him to fight through the morass of misinformation and recover his health, and help many many others.

At first, Paul was put on the most common thyroid treatment - Levothyroxine (also known as Synthroid or T4). However, the majority of his symptoms remained, much like they do for many on T4-therapy. Over time he became even more ill, with both low cortisol and low thyroid symptoms. This then spurred Paul to put everything he learned on paper - writing his 3 books. #347 The problem with current Thytoid treatment & testing, Reverse T3, & more withPaul Robinson

Cytomel is a T3 only thyroid medication (the brand version of liothyronine) that is far more active than levothyroxine. Because it’s so much more active, it also happens to be much better at helping thyroid patients with Hashimoto’s and hypothyroidism lose weight. 

Before you run out and grab it, though, or try to switch medications, there are a few things you need to know. 

When using it you will want to keep an eye on certain lab tests including free t3, total t3, and reverse T3. 

In addition, you will also want to keep an eye on your basal body temperature and resting heart rate. 

Because of its power, it’s important to keep an eye on these metrics to make sure you don’t accidentally take too much. 

As far as dosing for weight loss is concerned, most patients do best taking a dose somewhere between 5 and 20 mcg per day. 

Instead of thinking as Cytomel as an alternative to levothyroxine, I think it’s best thought of as a complementary option to it. 

Many thyroid patients see the best results when using both of these thyroid medications together.

Is This The BEST Thyroid Medication For Weight Loss?

Why is it that some thyroid patients experience almost too good-to-be-true side effects when they STOP taking thyroid medication? And why does taking thyroid medication seem to make some people feel WORSE? 

Should thyroid medication make thyroid patients feel better? You would think so, but life isn’t always that simple. 

There are some people who lose weight when they stop taking thyroid medication and, in this video, I want to explain why. 

Here are two reasons: 

1. You were taking levothyroxine when you didn’t need to be on it. 

Up to 30% of thyroid patients taking thyroid medication right now don’t need to be on it. If you are someone who is taking medication when you don’t need to, you may be making your thyroid worse (because your own thyroid gland would do a better job at regulating your levels compared to a medication). 

2. Your dose of levothyroxine was too high. 

Contrary to what you might think, high doses of levothyroxine will not always cause weight loss. In fact, taking too much thyroid medication can cause your body to create high levels of reverse t3 which results in tissue-level hypothyroidism. 

By stopping thyroid medication, your reverse T3 level can decrease which, paradoxically, improves thyroid function at the cellular level. 

Does this mean you should stop your thyroid medication if you want to lose weight? No! But it does mean that if you are having trouble losing weight that you should take a closer look at your thyroid medication dose to determine if you are taking the right amount and if you really need to be on it.
