Lonely Gimmick presents its Freakbeat Motown inspired new single “Grumpy Days”, an honest art piece about love and the early days of starting a life together with your significant other. 

 "Grumpy Days" hits you in the face almost immediately with a fast paced fuzzy but funky guitar line that is saturated in wah. The lead guitar comes in and out throughout the song creating a harmony that is reminiscent of one of Jimi Hendrix's funkier tracks. "Isabella" comes to mind. This Hendrix influenced guitar is especially noticeable during the solo (at the end of the song) which is something you definitely won't want to miss. While the lead guitar floats around, the drums, percussion and rhythm guitar hold the backing section down, driving an iconic Motown, slightly freakbeat groove. 

 An interesting fact to note, the drums and percussion were all recorded at "Crow’s Nest Studios" by the very accomplished Olly Betts (drummer of "The Duke Spirit") who also took the reins on mixing and mastering duties. The bass takes the middle ground between the two and keeps busy with grooves and fills that pull the listener in without being distracting or getting in the way of everything else that is sonically interesting.

 Above all this musical madness Max's vocals and lyrics get straight to the point with the opening line "You've put up with so much this year". A sentence we can all relate to after the last two years. He welcomes us into the ups and downs of his budding young relationship. Max is open with his message that not all is going smoothly, singing lyrics like "if you got rid of me, they'd all applaud" and the chorus's repeated line "I hate your grumpy days". However, this is followed by lyrics like "I found you girl" and "I didn't know I was looking for an answer and you were the one that I found" with the takeaway message being that they are together and that is all that matters.

 This is clearly not a straightforward love song like Rex Orange County's, “Loving is Easy" that implies love is all roses and sunshine. "Grumpy Days" makes the grounded point that love is hard and building a life with someone takes work, tolerance and patience. 

 During some musical sections, ad-libbed laughter and "woahs" are heard that feel like a throwback to classic 70s funk. This adds a playful and goofy vibe signaling that the companionship does in fact bring much happiness and purpose to their life. These ups and downs are conveyed perfectly by the vocal delivery going from smooth and soft to energetically hyper and almost operatic at times. 

 "Grumpy Days" is Max Pow's (aka Lonely Gimmick's) most buoyant and playful track to date. With goofy charm that uses subtle undertones of freakbeat, funk and Motown to create something new and exciting in the indie genre. "Grumpy Days" is sure to please indie and music fans alike.

Grumpy Days

The first vinyl release from Randm Records -   a 7" 45 single from Seattle based band My Goodness featuring "I'm Going Home" a cover of the classic track by The Sonics and an orginial, "In The Sun."

My Goodness is a Seattle-based blues/garage rock band that consists of Joel Schneider (Guitar/Vocals) and Andy Lum (Drums). After releasing their self-titled album in 2011, My Goodness was on hold for the majority of 2012, but with the recent addition of Andy Lum it has found a renewed purpose, moving forward with a heavier, more aggressive sound. Straddling the line between raw and refined, My Goodness doesn’t sacrifice technical precision in the name of punk rock - they strive to marry both.

As an older teen Joel’s interest in punk and the local Seattle hardcore scene led him to the more caustic, progressive sounds of bands like Rites of Spring and The Blood Brothers. The latter was also a major influence on Andy, who regularly attended all-ages gigs in Bellevue, drawing inspiration from bands big on that circuit, including Waxwing and These Arms Are Snakes.

In early 2012, Schneider was in search of a new drummer for My Goodness, and the possibility of collaborating musically with Andy Lum was finally realized. The pair recently recorded their second full length at Seattle’s London Bridge studios with esteemed Seattle producer Rick Parashar (Pearl Jam, Temple Of The Dog, Blind Melon) and have released a 7-inch for “Cold Feet Killer” b/w “I’ve Got A Notion” in February of this year.

old punkers reunite in a shed, playing covers for kicks.

Beginning in 1963, The Sonics created an uncompromising, overdriven brand of rock 'n' roll whose musical and emotional intensity had no precedent at the time, and has yet to be bested in the years since.  Driven by Gerry Roslie's fearsome, bloodcurdling howl, Larry Parypa's pummeling, distortion-heavy guitar work and Rob Lind's greasy, squalling sax, the Tacoma, Washington-bred combo delivered a brutal, propulsive sound and a swaggering, primal attitude to match.  By taking rock 'n' roll to the edge, the Sonics helped to lay the groundwork for punk, garage and heavy metal, decades before those genres existed.  

The Sonics became regional stars throughout the Pacific Northwest, where their over-the-top performances made them a consistently in-demand live act.  But their assaultive approach proved a bit too extreme for national mainstream exposure at the time.  The original Sonics splintered in 1967, but the band's influence and mystique continued to grow steadily in the ensuing decades, as their vintage work was rediscovered by succeeding generations of fans and musicians.  Meanwhile, such Sonics standards as "Psycho," "The Witch," "Strychnine" and "Have Love, Will Travel" continued to turn up in film soundtracks, TV commercials and the set lists of the countless Sonics-loving bands who emulated—but never duplicated—the band's sound.

As The Sonics' posthumous profile grew, the band members stubbornly resisted a steady stream of lucrative offers to perform reunion shows.  Instead, they maintained that the Sonics would only reform when they felt that they could equal their original onstage energy level, and when they could record new material that would equal the intensity of the old stuff.  

The Sonics finally ended their four-decade hiatus in November 2007, with a pair of rapturously received shows in New York.  Although the band had intended those shows to be a one-time-only event, word of the performances quickly circulated amongst Sonics fans, resulting in performance offers from around the world, and turning the temporary reunion into a permanent one.  Since then, The Sonics have performed for rabid crowds across the United States as well as England, Spain, Belgium, Sweden and Norway.  They headlined a sold-out concert at Seattle's Paramount Theatre, where they had performed their last show back in the day, and at the SXSW music-industry conference in Austin, Texas, and the NXNE festival in Toronto.  

Having reconquered the live stage and built a new, multi-generational fan base, the reactivated Sonics have set their sights back on the recording medium, enlisting noted producer Jim Diamond (White Stripes, Dirtbombs) to record THIS IS THE SONICS —the Sonics' first album of new material in nearly half a century—at Diamond's Detroit studio Ghetto Recorders.  

The 12-song set finds The Sonics channeling their original savage, primal essence on such new originals as "Chaos," "Sugaree," "Bad Betty" and "I Got Your Number," while continuing their tradition of audacious cover material with raucous reworkings of Ray Charles' "I Don't Need No Doctor," Bo Diddley's "You Can't Judge A Book by the Cover," the Kinks' "The Hard Way," Hank Ballard's "Look At Little Sister" and the rousing Motown nugget "Leaving Here."

THIS IS THE SONICS shows the Sonics' original sound and swagger to be fully intact, and ready for 2015.

Lonely Gimmick is the brainchild of Samuel Powell. Formerly an anonymous artist also going by the alter ego Max Pow. Samuel Powell used both these names as pseudonyms to hide their real identity. Recently retiring the "gimmick" of being anonymous as they felt it no longer aligned with the direction their music and image was heading. Lonely Gimmick's work is self-recorded and produced, with the vast majority of the instruments featured on each track played by Sam himself. LG has been building up a following online since 2020 releasing singles such as "Blue Ticked Influencer" and "Grumpy Days". All the while winning praise from online music press outlets such as American Pancake, Obscure Sound and featuring on BBC introducing.
