Because we are self-aware creatures, we also have the capacity to stand back from our immediate existence and reflect upon our past decisions and actions. It is only in hindsight that the true nature and effect of the paths we have chosen are revealed to us. In this way, we are able to see the most favorable choices that we can make in any given situation, however only after the results of our decisions, from the frivolous to the most significant, are permanently etched into our histories, for better or worse. Whether or not we approve of the outcome, there is nothing that can change it, so it must be accepted, despite any difficulty or pain there may be in doing so.

This uses the same acoustic tuba recording run through an entirely different MAX patch. 

The sounds heard here are for a collaboration with dancer Jacqui Dugal and our performance at the International Human Rights Arts Festival this March in NYC.

Henryk Górecki’s Symphony No. 3, written in 1976, combines quasi-sacred minimalism with modal melodies drawn from centuries old Polish chants and folk songs scored for solo soprano and string orchestra. Symphony of Sorrowful Songs achieved international acclaim after Dawn Upshaw and the London Sinfonietta’s 1991 recording under the baton of David Zinman, with over 2 million copies of the record sold to date. Arranged for tuba and electronics and performed using MAX/MSP, this arrangement aims to represent the monumental work by Górecki by giving the performer the opportunity to recreate a massive 200+ bar cannon, have their acoustic sound digitally distorted and glitched, and play the role of a soprano soloist in front of a massive string orchestra…all in the same 20 minutes.
