CTA or a Call-to-action button is a button used on a digital interface that encourages users to perform a specific action on a digital interface, thus improving the conversion rate of your product.

By its definition, the CTA button stands out among all other buttons and functions, so users are consciously or subconsciously drawn to it. Hence, the design of CTA buttons must appeal to the psychological aspect of humanity that we all feel the urge the press a button when we see one in our daily lives. 

The CTA button must look like an actual button with carefully thought shadows and gradients. The size of the CTA button should stay in line with the rule of thumb: to make your button at least 44px high so your users can touch it with ease and comfort. In addition to the graphics, you can also use text to urge your users to push this button. 

Using words like “Buy now” or “Press here” creates a sense of rush and excitement. For some CTA buttons, your choice of text should indicate to your users what will happen when they click it.

For example, you may want to use a sentence like “Pay $9 now” to represent the imminent payment actions should the user choose to proceed.

Finally, it would help if you had clear interaction indicators to tell your users that the app has registered their input. You will need to design the CTA button and its variants: Not pushed, hover, and pushed.

Call To Action Design Tips

According to passwordresearch.com, 80% of data breaches are linked to weak or reused login credentials, and 61% of people use the same password for multiple online accounts. 

The UX design in login has become increasingly relevant as companies work hard to protect their customers' security of online assets. You can use several tips to improve the user experience for password security. 

When users register for an account, you should encourage them to use complicated passwords by telling them why secure passwords are essential. You can use real-world cyber breach stats and warning phrases to discourage reusing passwords. 

Once your users are aware of the risk of weak passwords, try to guide them through the process. Have clear and indicative new password rules such as character counts, upper and lower cases, a number, and the requirement for special characters. 

Alternatively, you should also consider other ways that users can log in without the hassle of remembering a lot of passwords. Many universities and organizations now use Single Sign On (SSO) to verify user identities. Sign-in by Google is a good example. Users can use their Google account to access multiple third-party services without the need for a password. 

Also, you may use fingerprints and facial recognition technologies to identify users. Sign In with Apple is a good feature that combines SSO and biometric identification. The mechanism utilizes FaceID or 

Touch ID to securely verify users and help them log in with one push. 
Finally, encourage and guide your users to enable two-factor authentication (2FA) as an extra layer of security. 

In addition to an existing pair of login credentials, users need to provide the random number generated on a third-party app (like Microsoft Authenticator) before they are granted access.

In 1980, a company called MUJI was established in Tokyo, whose name literally translates to “Quality goods with no brands.” Starting off as a company providing affordable food and daily supplies to Japanese people living in a substantial economic bubble, the MUJI brand has become an expensive brand 30 years later that sells notebooks, humidifiers, undergarments, and wooden tables at a premium. 

Brandlessness has recently become a trend in many parts of the world as an emerging marketing strategy to democratize our spending on everyday necessities and drive down the cost of producing them. However, much like the unstoppable gentrification of the MUJI brand, has suffered multiple setbacks in the consumer market, and the value of the brand itself still matters. 

Contrary to the conception of brand premium, the brand actually serves the function of communicating the idea of the company to its consumers. When we think of Nike, we think about passion and sports. Apple signifies simplicity and elegance. 

Brands establish trust between the company and the customer; it is a fundamental promise that businesses make to their patrons. 

As designers, we need to strengthen the concept of the brand using the 3Cs: Clear, Compelling, and Consistent. Clear: Is our promise both specific and easy to understand? Compelling: Do we have a hook or a unique proposition that will entice people? Consistent: Can we build everything we do on this foundation, or will we have to switch gears when faced with changes and challenges? Communicate these 3 Cs with your customers well so they can establish an accurate assessment of your brand in their minds.

Brands Still Matter

There are occasions when users have to perform dangerous actions on your product. Things like deleting an account or destroying a cloud instance can bring unpredicted and unrecoverable risks to people’s digital assets.

Therefore, a UI/UX designer must alert users before a dangerous or destructive action or command can be executed. Jakob Nielsen, the author behind “Nielsen usability principles, ” suggests the following. 

First, help users prevent mistakes. Nielsen believes it is important to use a dialogue box to inform users of the destructive actions they are about to perform. In addition to a generic title, you can use text prompts to elaborate on the destructive nature of such actions.

A good example would be this. Delete Account: Are you sure you want to delete your account? This action is irreversible and will delete your profile permanently. By illustrating the potential consequences, you are drawing your users’ attention to the damaging nature of their actions so that they do not unintentionally delete the account.

Also, the red colour on the dialogue box can indicate danger. You may want to avoid suggesting a default option on the dialogue box because you want your users to confirm their intentions and make rational choices. 

Second, give your users a chance to undo their actions. For instance, Gmail gives you 20 seconds to withdraw the email you sent. The buffer time reduces user anxiety and allows them to evade catastrophic errors.

UI/UX designers have been working hard to create the best graphical user interface or GUI in the past decade. Nowadays, text-based interactions such as chatbots are gaining momentum in the product industry, providing a novel yet a reliable way for companies to engage with their customers.

These bots, commonly known as conversational user interfaces (CUI), use machine intelligence to naturally and conversationally supply users with information or service. They are being used by many big names like Burberry, AT&T, and even New York Times. How can we create an optimal user experience for chatbots?

Here are a few tips. 
Number one, give your bot a purpose. 
Before your bot can do something for you, you must make sure it understands what it needs to do. For example, the KLM airline bot helps passengers manage traveling affairs.

From ticket booking, rescheduling, and transit assistance to destination visa guide. The bot does it all. You will first need to think about if the bot needs to do one thing only or many things altogether. Different purposes require different product development strategies.

Number two, give your bot an appropriate personality consistent with the company branding. We all use different tones and slang in our daily conversations, and so will the bot. Program your bot to speak in a way that your human customer service would use so it does not interfere with the company image.

A bot working for New York Times speaks in a neutral and calm tone, representing journalism integrity. A sales bot speaks with passion and delight to inspire purchase. An airline bot speaks to customers in efficient and straightforward language to help passengers mitigate their travel anxiety.

On 14 March 2022, the world suffered a tragic loss with the sad passing of Steve Wilhite due to COVID complications. He was a great person who was known as the father of Graphics Interchange Format or GIF. We are making this video to tell you a bit more about Steve and his story of bringing GIFs to life.

In the 1980s, Steve and his team faced a problem: How to make computers show coloured images without consuming too much memory? Lived in an age when the Internet was not even a thing, computer users had to subscribe to a networking service called CompuServe to connect computers together and send information to each other. Steve Wilhite found a way.

In 1995, the technology giant NetScape Labs Infotech Pvt LTD released its new Internet browser Netscape Navigator 2.0, allowing users to download, view, and transfer GIFs embedded on a web page.

Developers began to use GIFs to decorate their websites, and the GIF format laid the foundation for Web 1.0, which I believe is still in many people’s memories today. The GIF culture took off during the 2000s with the emergence of new social websites like Tumblr, Twitter, and Reddit.

Internet users utilized GIFs to spread information and disseminate the latest news. We are sorry to see the passing of Steve, and just as what is said in his obituary: Even with all his accomplishments, he remained a very humble, kind, and good man. He will be sorely missed.

Working in a team is very important for product design and development. But there are times when we have to carry out the entire workflow alone. The lone-wolf mode doesn’t mean we can’t utilize the team resources and deliver high-quality products. We must think creatively and achieve the best outcome possible for our clients. Here are some tips that you can use when conducting user research alone. 

Outsource your usability test to a third party. Who needs an in-house usability team when you can hire people on the Internet to test the product for you? Websites like Maze or UsabilityHub allow you to quickly obtain a usability report for free or a low fee. 

Many providers can integrate with design tools like Figma so you can make changes to your design file quickly and easily. 
If you don’t have an existing user base, try services like “User Interviews” or “Respondents,” who can connect you with actual volunteers or paid testers. Contextual inquiry is also an ideal approach. 

Visit the actual environment where people will be using your product and ask for their feedback. Suppose you are designing an app for a bank, visit a branch yourself, observe how they work, and talk to them about your plans and ideas. 

Finally, if your product is online and live, try analytics tools like Hotjar or Full story to monitor and track user behaviors, so you can acquire insights from authentic usage.

Conduct User Research Alone

There are times when companies need to have their branding undergo a complete makeover. Rebranding happens when a business sees the need for transformation or needs to shake off an unpleasant past.

Here are a few things to consider when completing a rebranding assignment as a designer.

First, modernize the logo. The graphic design reflects the aesthetics of a particular era. Let’s use Samsung as an example. In the beginning, the Samsung logo contains three stars since the company name means three stars in its Korean transliteration. In the 2000s, the company adopted a new logo design—the capital SAMSUNG letters with an oval shape on the back. Entering the 2020s, Samsung removed the oval shape and adjusted the typeface to give the brand a much more modern look to appeal to a younger user group.

Second, choose an appropriate typeface. Sans-Serif is the latest trend for typeface design. Many companies like Google, Microsoft, Facebook, and Spotify abandoned their legacy Serif logo and embraced a modern typeface.

Third, you need to give your brand a friendly voice. Brand voice refers to the overall design guidelines that the brand adopts. It provides the brand with a personality. Uber’s brand voice is bold, direct, and passionate. Customers need some getting-used-to when they first see the rebranded company, and the new brand voice can help them embrace the transformation faster and easier.
