An excellent orchestration for band from 1954 of a set of five variations on a theme from Beethoven's String Quartet No. 5 (1800). This is an artistic alternative to the typical band repertoire and it offers excellent opportunities to teach Classical style, form, counterpoint and the life of Beethoven. Beethoven's variations are beautifully suited for a colorful orchestration into the concert band medium. A rousing march is heard in the fourth variation. Captain Salt's Sociable Spades Clover Orchestra: A Variation in Classical Masjesty

My first go at variation form. It is between a constant melody and constant ostinato form of variation. Each time the two main themes are repeated a different instrument is added with a new contribution to the piece. When writing this I had the impression of a forest in my mind.

The piece begins with harp and clarinet, the second time the themes are played, a flute harmonizes with the clarinet. The third time around a new ostinato accompanies the harp on the cello.
