Luke's gospel tells us that after Jesus rejects the temptation in the wilderness the Devil departs for "a more opportune time." From a psychological standpoint, it is hard to image a more opportune time to manipulate someone than when they are physically weak and socially isolated. However, there is one advantage in feeling utterly weak: in weakness, we lose the illusion of self-sufficiency, and it may just be that this loss provides a unique protection against the lies of evil, so long as it leads us to depend on God's strength and truth.
