Our challenges were:
[Workflow, Hard] Start your track by making one element that will span the entire song, then move to another element which will span the entire song, and repeat until the song is complete (e.g. you must make all the drums for your entire song first before moving to making the bass in any part of the song)

[Creativity, Stupid] Each element must change source/type every 5 seconds at most (e.g. you must change the snare you are using every 5 seconds, if you are using a piano, after 5 seconds you must not use a piano) - this applies to all elements of the track

For the Workflow challenge, we started by making all of the drums, then did all the basses, then all the chords, then all the leads/melodies.

For the Creativity challenge, we found that at our tempo of 148 BPM, 5 seconds is just about 3 bars and an eighth note triplet. Thus, every synth patch, every drum sample, etc. only plays for up to 3 bars and 1/16 triplet, and then is never used again.

The Secret of Flint Harbor

This was the first track produced for my project, Undecember. Although most of the concept was conceived back in 2011, the actual track was produced at the end of 2024. It is an aggressively whimsical and nostalgic track – very much inspired by early 90s media (music, TV shows, and video games).
To me, a mascot has a certain kind of purity and a playful spirit. While the surface subject is blatantly obvious, it is symbolic of all the inhibitions lost as one assumes an alternate identity –  in this case, a mascot. While that can have some very foreboding implications in the wrong hands, this track focuses on the more playful and amusing side of such a scenario – especially as it pertains to what a mascot represents. Whether it’s stealing a bag of chips, jumping on trampolines to shoot balls in hoops, or escaping to Mexico. Indeed that escalated quickly.
Dedicated to the furries and the protestors in mascots.

A melody that tells the tale of little furball scouts.

This tiny band  sets out on a simple routine expedition, until they stumble upon a dark cave ruled by a giant bat monster.

Our friends fight with all their strength and defeat the ruler of the cave.
They step out of the darkness victorious, hopeful, and ready to see another dawn.

Tale I

A gentle yet firm self-intervention. The whimsical backdrop can't hide the pain, as your "broken heart, it decides how far you drive". This track is the Inner Truth counseling the hurt Ego to drop the pride and patiently "re-evaluate expectations"  to break the cycle.

I always liked the dark aspect of festivals and carnivals alike. So I made this song.

The Carnival of Shadows (OST)

A joyful Christmas story brought to life through music. Santa, snow, and laughter collide in this magical, cinematic holiday adventure.  The Story is whimsical, joyful, imaginative — like a Christmas movie in song form. A magical adventure of Santa, reindeer, and enchanted Snow-Sprites who save Christmas night. It’s a celebration of teamwork, laughter, and childlike wonder.  “The Night the Magic Played” is a joyful Christmas adventure song full of laughter, wonder, and heartwarming storytelling for all ages.

The Night the Magic Plays

A full orchestra piece written in the key of C minor, primarily in 6/8. Sometimes, when I write my music, I can't quite describe the feeling I am trying to create. This piece is an instance of that. I titled it "The Falling of a Star" to capture a grandeur feeling. I like to think that the title and the powerful emotions of this song tie in together. It can be associated with a cataclysmic event such as a star falling onto the Earth. Or, it can be associated with the feelings of a negative event in one's life. I feel this song anytime I am feeling overwhelmed by inner turmoil.

This is a full orchestra piece full of fantasy and adventure. It is written in 12/8 in the key of D major. I wrote this piece when I was really into reading fantasy books, playing D&D, and overall enjoying fantasy aesthetics.

Echoes of Forgotten Realms

A concert band piece written in the key of Eb major, primarily in 4/4. This piece was commissioned and performed by Southeastern Women in Music in 2023. When we began our collaboration, they gave me free reign on the piece as they had liked my style of writing. The only request they had was to make it memorable. Personally, I often daydream. Multiple times a day, I will find myself lost in inner fantasies and worlds. In this piece, I tried to capture the freeing feeling of this. It is meant to feel hopeful, untethered, and adventurous. Enjoy a whimsical, sleepless dreamland. 

Daydream

Drawing on the inspiration of a dream, Nik tried to capture the joy of being young and free through the joy of playing football with friends until the very last drops of daylight were squeezed from the day - and a feeling of escape from the realities of adult life which can feel dizzying when you look down to see how far you've come. Playful, whimsical and a love letter to our inner children who 'did not leave or die,' this is a song for 'him and them and us and we.'

Time: 4. Football in the Sky

A short looping game soundtrack written for chamber orchestra, inspired by Genshin Impact, Zelda Breath of the Wild, and the works of composer Gareth Coker. Chamber woodwinds take the centre stage to evoke a  light, whimsical atmosphere, and an English Horn takes the lead as the main soloist. The piece is sprinkled with accents of high metal and wooden percussion, chosen to represent the merchant's assortment of many wares. This is my first project orchestrating with Orchestral Tools' Berlin Orchestra, where the more intimate ORTF, close, leader, and spot microphones were essential in mixing the proper space for this piece. Tree and AB mics were used solely for the purpose of reverb. This is the second piece in which I've applied a top-down mixing workflow, the previous being "The Phoenix Gate."

You can call me GT, Gold, Golden or even just GoldenTails. Most people call me GT. Its just easier.
I have plugged my voice into an AI module because I am personally tone deaf. I did the same thing with my husband.
I make my music to share a story or comment on the world around me.
The voices you hear are my real voice and my husband's real voice.
Other times its because I like the song or I was asked to do it.

My story is the same as probably so many.  I always wanted to write music and share it, to express it, to let others feel it.  Like so many before me - life took over.  Responsibility.  Sure, I could have gone after the things I loved, but I felt the responsibility, so off around the world I went.  That was truly amazing, too.  But always tapping on my shoulder was the desire to write.  So I kept at it, just never doing anything with it.

Jumping forward to the here and now - I’m doing it.  Writing, composing, arranging, and editing.  I hope you enjoy it, give me your thoughts, and share it with others.

Formed by Nik Larcombe in 2024, Cathedral Drive is a project which aims to combine musical styles, different lyrical themes and music technology. In the words of Matt Kendrick, young vocalist on many of the tracks on 'Time & Tide' (the band's debut double album) 'the mix of stuff going on with the Cathedrals is mad!'
