The unique club is my all time favourite venue with its fantastic mixture of sixties and funk flavoured grooves. The "Unique" musicstyle is representing best, what dancemusic is to me and what kind of music immediately touches my heart and feet. I had the idea of making a tribute mix, when i first heard the track "Afro Cookie" by Renegades of jazz. A powerful and super funky Afrojazz tune, which directly timewarped me to the 90s on the little packed unique dancefloor, with its lights shining under my the dancing feet and the warm bass powering through my shaking (hip teen ;-) body. For the mix, I put together some classic Unique tracks that I remember playing a lot with newer tracks that I think would have played there. The Unique was located in the old town of düsseldorf in a former animate bar. the walls were covered with 70s plastic fabric, which is normally used for sofas. so the acoustic was very special and the sound was a bit mono - retro and that was absolutley perfect for the musicstyle. People were dancing everywhere in the club. on the way to the bar on the way to the toilet, inside the sofa separees or while waiting at the bar. it was all about dancing and music. Founder and mastermind of unique was Henry Storch, who brought with his crew lots of music and artists from uk, such as Andy Smith (Portishead) Eddie Piller (Acid jazz records) and organized concerts with turntable jazz, erobique, the mobylettes (and so much more!). his project the frank popp ensemble, had a radio hit in 2003 with "hip teens don`t wear blue jeans.", which some of you may know. The Club had to close in 2005 and Henry Storch has died too young in 2018. I hope to meet him once in Freakbeat - sixties soul heaven to thank him for the musical treasure he brought into my life. But the Unique Record Label is still existing and you can still discover great artists and music and there!!

Whimsical Wise Guys is a Pittsburgh-based rap collective led by founding members kühn and BR0WN. Over time, the group expanded to include Mokiman98, Alebanjo, Gold, and T.S.A.R.G., each contributing their unique talents and perspectives. From chaotic beginnings to a polished final masterpiece, their evolution reflects a journey of creative discovery and collaboration.

The story began with ALL CAPS, an experimental project born out of a joke. Tracks like INTRO and BATHTUB FREESTYLE (the first-ever song by kühn and BR0WN) captured their early raw energy. Despite its imperfections, the album laid a foundation for their sound and paved the way for im horny. Surprisingly, this experimental album garnered over 100 listens, even though the group admits it wasn’t their best work.

It wasn’t until ASS that Whimsical Wise Guys began taking their music seriously. This album, featuring T.I.P.—the song that inspired the group to elevate their artistry—marked a major turning point. With contributions from Mokiman98 and Alebanjo, ASS demonstrated more polished production and collaborative ambition.

The group then split into two solo singles: KÜHN and BR0WN. These works explored the unique identities of their creators.

From KÜHN, The Better of Them stood out as a raw rap track, featuring an intense beat created by kühn himself.
From BR0WN, TRAVIS SCOTT became a fan favorite, known for its hard-hitting beats and captivating flow.
The culmination of their efforts was WHIMSICAL WISE GUYS, their final and most ambitious album. Featuring tracks that defined their evolution, the project highlighted their growth:

Rise Above (a solo track by BR0WN) and BR0WNS THEME (a refined revisitation of earlier work) displayed their lyrical and emotional depth.
KUHNS THEME, inspired by kühn’s earlier work, redefined his raw style with newfound clarity.
Kevin Hart, featuring Mokiman98 and a standout beat by Gold, exemplified their refined production.
Secret Landing, featuring T.S.A.R.G., is widely regarded as their best song, blending sharp lyricism with dynamic energy.
I Hate Her, featuring Alebanjo, showcases his standout verse, undeniably one of the highlights of the album.
TIL WE BEAT OUR MEAT, the longest track on the album, served as a climactic closer, showcasing the best rapping from kühn and BR0WN.
The album concluded symbolically with OUTRO, the final song ever created by the group. Reflecting on their journey, it paid homage to INTRO by reversing its structure and closing with the line, “we never die, remember Whimsical Wise Guys.”

Although WHIMSICAL WISE GUYS marks the end of their collaborative music, it’s also a starting point for future endeavors. Mokiman98, primarily a rapper, now continues to craft beats, while kühn and BR0WN plan to expand their artistry further through their solo projects. Tracks like BR0WN’s TRAVIS SCOTT and kühn’s The Better of Them remind fans of the passion that started it all.

Whimsical Wise Guys is more than a group; it’s a testament to growth, camaraderie, and creativity. Though their music as a collective has ended, their legacy continues to inspire.

I'm a big fan of music generally, and also making connections with people through music. My collection has grown over the years and is still growing weekly! It contains a bit of everything, mostly influenced by breakbeat and drum and bass although more recently house and tech house. I was and still am a big fan of breaks, especially tracks from the likes of Freeland, Atomic Hooligan, Freq Nasty, Stanton Warriors, Plump DJs, Krafty Kuts etc but this list is definitely not exhaustive and I will listen to, and play anything within reason. Got to have an open mind! 

Things are a little quieter these days but I've spent many weekends lost in a field/club/house party somewhere!

My musical influences lie in the big beaty 90s, dancing to Acid Jazz, 60s and Northern Soul (my top favourite style!!!!), funky Breaks and French house. In the early 2000s in Berlin I discovered soul and funk in electronic dance music. At a legendary b2b set with ZIP (Perlon) and Matthew Herbert in CDV "Club der Visionäre". I love funky fluffy minimal house! I like to play multigenre and all styles. I also love odd things like the Hammond organ cover by Klaus Wunderlich (here I digitized "Uraltedelschnulzen") or MoogCookbook and last but not least the Jazz- Comedy universe of Helge Schneider.:)!
