Exclusive: Azemad - Helwan

Cultural crosser Azemad not only crossed boarders when moving from chaotic Cairo to chaotic Berlin but incorporates the best of both worlds in his music. Therefore his works include sounds, elements, drums and vocals with an Arabic and African-touch or influence and notes from the capital’s Techno or Electronic music scene. The result is, contrary to the assumption probably, a homogeneous new EP - also due the artist’s technological development from the EP’s predecessor Dreams - that showcases Azemad’s artistic being and identity at the same time. Shortly before the release of Afriki on Berlin label Awkwardly Social, the artists spoke to Torture the Artist about the production process, the stories that come with each title, his musical progress and inspiration as well as the influences of both metropolis on his music.

EXCLUSIVE: Azemad - Helwan [Awkwardly Social]

Mixpak Records and Man Recordings are two labels with a shared, global perspective. Brooklyn based Mixpak has established itself as a proponent of Caribbean music worldwide, while Berlin label Man Recordings specializes in regional electronic styles from the Southern hemisphere.

With both labels twisting styles & defying genre expectations, their strong natural connection has already led to artistic crossover, both having independently released tracks from Poirier, Douster, Schlachthofbronx, So Shifty & Wildlife. Following an ingenious & humorous idea spawned by Hat N Hoodie boss, Alex Wahl, an official collision of the two labels has resulted in "PAK MAN", a collaborative compilation EP that brings together like-minded producers from both sides.

To start, Murlo and Wildlife ride a heavy Dembow riddim through contemporary UK clubland on "Control," quoting Grime and Jacking House along the way. A diva screams, a square wave pulses, and the crowd goes crazy.

Poirier and Douster's effort explores ragga vibes, melding bits of Dancehall and Soca into one skipping whole, accented by a hyper sharp acid synth that takes the whole piece out of the beach and into outer space.

Mixpak and Man bosses, Dre Skull and Daniel Haaksman, combine for a frantic track called "Split Screen," a Power Soca track trapped in a Tron-style neon vortex, which barrels along at breakneck speed until the inevitable system crash and reboot disrupts the VR.

Munich and Miami team up for Jubilee and Schlachthofbronx's driving “Go Deh," which builds tension before unloading into a dancehall-quoting Miami Bass thunderstorm of alarms and lasers.

Milangeles and So Shifty's collaborative effort "Dembele" gets its name from the talented musician who lent his balaphone skills to the track. A spirited and melodic effort steeped in the traditions of both African and Caribbean music, "Dembele" has its feet firmly planted in the now.

"PAK MAN" is a smart connection between two labels with similar loves. There is nothing forced about the meta-eclecticism of "PAK MAN," but there is plenty of new and exciting music that points in many different directions while still staying respectful to its source material. This is global dance music for 2014 -- the product of unexpected collaboration and complete freedom.

Jad & The joins the label on the A1 with a slow mo meditation full of warm pads and a string of broken beats on “X-Treme Drum”. The A2 comes from Lehults head chef, Lucky Charmz, with a 150bpm drum and bass inspired electro cut. Rolling low subs with a UK feel. Something different.

The B side invites Sid Quirk, who recently featured on BP009 under other alias Keppel, this time with his 88bpm haunting original vocals, packed between dark percussions and twisted soundscapes on “B_F L_R”, on the Hessle feel. Closing up the release, the B2 welcomes back Filip Szostak to the fold, this time bringing a drum heavy breakbeat DJ Tool that closes proceedings with energy and a suited transition for shifting moods on the dance floor.

There was a strange, mysterious object which floated in the dense night sky. It flashed an electric green, illuminous and weird amidst a backdrop of delicate stars. It left a lot to the imagination - what was inside? Who was in flight? Were these creatures from the great beyond? It had been a long time since they'd last seen a UFO around these parts, not since the hot and heavy summer nights of the sixties. Then again, who knew what they'd seen way back then in the days of old. It was but a blur to him, a psychedelic haven of rage and madness.

A little while back we featured a mix from the ever playful musician and producer Your Planet Is Next. A Scandinavian superhero of sorts who has come to save the day from snobby enthusiasts and those who take life too seriously. He appears on a new split EP for Warning Records with a track called "UFO".

The Berlin native is back with a dancefloor ready good vibes EP, describing it as "Tongue in cheek dance music, for hands in the air moments, on the dancefloor, your living room or under the shower. The EP is an ode to all the hands in the air dancefloor moments that we are going to miss this summer, due to the Corona Virus."

We don’t need to bang on too much about how successful the original mixes of ‘Take Me Away’ and ‘New Dawn’ were for Exile and Mark XTC. They were obviously very pleased with the reaction though, so much so that the talented duo went back into the studio and crafted VIP mixes plus a brand new tune called ‘Pull Up’. What a treat!

The EP title track ‘Pull Up’ was doing the rounds in almost every DJs set on the planet just before the dreaded month of March. It’s tight yet simplistic style combines effortlessly with filtered out Amen breaks and single note bass stabs that do a great job of shaking whatever is in a 10 mile radius.

Without chucking the anthem status around too much, the original ‘Take Me Away’ was no doubt one of the big tunes of 2019 and the VIP simply adds a ton of variety to the mix whilst maintaining the character of the original. You’re going to love the pitch shifted vocals on this.

‘New Dawn’ also gets a cheeky update, retaining a lot of original elements including the singalong bass riff. One thing is for sure though, this VIP provides a ton of attitude and darkness. A tune that can be taken one of two ways really. You’re either going to look to the floor and shuffle your socks off or stand at the back, disappearing into the shadows. Whatever you choose, this one’s a stinker..
