This is a great work, Travis! Perfectly paced dramatic tension throughout. And such a tantalizing ending!

something about this section makes sense to me because you play harmonica. Wow. seriously awesome, dramatic stuff.

Rapsodie (1999)

This piece is in equal parts based on Birtwistle’s Triumph of Time and Hideo Iwasaki and Oron Catts’ art installation Biogenic Timestamp (http://www.aec.at/center/en/2013/07/26/biogenic-timestamp/), in which microchips are slowly being consumed by genetically engineered cyanobacteria. Both artworks reflect on the paradoxical ways in which we attempt to preserve, capture, or fight the flow of time, yet we cannot ultimately defeat its inexorable, ever-changing onward march. My piece uses spectral techniques and electronic processing mapped onto acoustic music to decay, distort and transform a sample of Birtwistle’s piece into something new.

This work was commissioned to be programmed with Stravinsky's seminal work, "Symphonies of Wind Instruments" (1920), and uses the same instrumentation. While not an overt homage or response to the Stravinsky, it does utilize a few stolen motivic ideas.

Sing Sweetly, Run Swiftly is a piece that deals with two types of music.  The first is nostalgic and still. The second is boisterous and ebullient and it stands as a contrast to the stillness of the first.  The piece, then, is about the interaction between these two types of music.  This piece was commissioned by the Lyra Society of Philadelphia.

I'm also an Assistant Professor at East Carolina University, where I teach music theory/composition, and Director of the NC NewMusic Initiative. I have a wonderful wife, Lauren; an amazing son, Owen; and a splendiferous wiener dog, Toby.
