For this twenty-third episode of Polychrome Radio, we have the honor of hosting Bristol’s very own Farrell in our collection of recordings. Chris has been instrumental in shaping the port city sound through Idle Hands label and legendary record store, providing a unanimously respected and influential platform to Bristol’s underground electronic music scene, now very well represented on the global stage. 

The multiple crisis that the UK independent record industry faces opened the door to doubt, but also to re-invention. Chris Farrell’s resilience, incredible drive, resilience, vision and artist discovery and music selection talents are his best assets, and he has been making use of them over the past months. With a new record label ‘Devil’s Work’ (whose first release is a must-listen) and remarked DJ performances at @loveintfestival and @houghtonfestival , Chris Farrell has been opening new avenues and expressing his creativity in novel ways.

This podcast is a perfect reflection of it. Seamlessly flowing through dub bass lines, percussive rhythms, deep & hypnotic techno and UK flavored tech house, it is a masterclass where the focus is placed on a progressive dancefloor experience and musical storytelling. Our next mix comes from an elusive vinyl DJ based in Naarm, earthwalker (FKA Sommi). We've been following earthwalker for some time, admiring their contributions to @vortexvortexvortex @animalia-label and @meltmelbourne for their endlessly classy selections and super slick vinyl mixing.

Following suit, earthwalker delivers an hour of fun, groovy tech and progressive house of both the old and new varieties - perfect party vibes for the upcoming summer in the southern hemisphere. We can't wait to see what's to come for this talented up-and-coming selector.

@Moopie joins us for the mix series this week. Beijing-born, Melbourne-based, the A Colourful Storm label founder and NTS Radio resident has fast become one of dance music's most hotly tipped DJ's. Recent b2b's with the likes of Helena Hauff and Ben UFO attest to his serious pedigree. For DIM 296, we find Moopie in groovy form, running an array of lush house and breaks over 65-minutes.

For the 20th installment in our Digest series we're pleased to present a mix we’ve wanted to record for a long time between Dan from Seven Hills and Matt C from @linalerecords

In the early to mid 90’s amongst the experimentation and flurry of creativity in electronic music there was a sub-genre emerging in the midsts of the fast-paced euphoria and Goa sounds of the southwestern Indian coast. A branch of downtempo which had the psychedelia of trance, the grooves and deepness of trip-hop, and the futurism and weirdness of IDM.

Appearing as occasional one-offs at the end of an album or on the B-sides of much faster records, these tracks were often overlooked, they didn't fit easily into typical trance sets and it seemed the intention was more for home listening. 10+ mins of runtime wasn’t unusual, which was time for the music to breathe and develop into something really special.

We think some of the best music of the era was in this halfway point between lounge music and dance, it was a way for producers to experiment with music not fully intended for the dance-floor. This intersection of dub, breakbeats, ambient, and experimental music led to some really interesting sounds, which we wanted to showcase here with this mix.

Just under 2 hours of downtempo experimentation, including some of our all-time favourites from the last 30 or so years. This is our music for acid trips, the ends of long days and nights, the after-party after the after-party. Also includes some newer bits that we think have the right attitude!
