I believe that music is present in every moment, in every scene. We can feel music relatively easily when those scenes are easy to understand and impressive, of course, but when they are not, for example, I think this is especially true in situations that are too mundane, too ordinary, or seemingly unrelated to music.

I can never hear it, but I think I hear it. Only after it has taken shape as a piece of music do I feel that this is how it must have sounded at the time. And the question of whether it was right or not will never be answered. But by questioning things that are becoming just a shell and looking at things from a different angle, we can gain a new perspective.

Questions always come up and I try to answer them somehow, but they always elude me. So by continuing to create my work, I manage to find my own answers to different questions at different times.

In this day and age, when all that is valued is how easy, quick and simple it is to get answers, it would be nice to have a few more people who are willing to face questions that will never be answered.

Underground Communication

First Snow of The Year" is the project of Belgium-based artist Erik Sevenans, who adopted this moniker in 2017 following his relocation to Munich, Germany. Whilst grappling with a foreign language and adjusting to his new environment, Erik found himself in the midst of an exceptionally cold winter that year. During this period of adaptation, he embarked on the creation of an album, delving into the exploration of ambient textures, a departure from his usual musical terrain. The album, born out of this experimental phase, coincided with the first snowfall of the year, thus being the reason for the project's distinctive name. Originally conceived as Erik's personal soundtrack for his daily subway commute while engrossed in Murakami novels, the project took on a life of its own.
 
In 2018, Erik made a conscious decision to turn this into an annual tradition, committing to record an album each year following the first snowfall. The raw essence of his second album served as the demo version for his release with Whitelabrecs, titled "Awakening of the Pines". The record drew inspiration from Munich's surroundings, the majestic Alps, the Isar river, and the nearby forest. During the challenges posed by the Covid-19 lockdowns and beyond, Erik experienced a surge in creative productivity. He dedicated time to refining his sound, experimenting with techniques, and applying newfound knowledge to both the development of fresh material and the enhancement of his existing body of work.
 
The writing of "Awakening of the Pines" involved diverse techniques and ideas, reflecting Erik's pursuit of discovery. The initial compositions varied in style, with some leaning towards a post-rock aesthetic and others embracing a more synth-based approach. Despite this diversity, the common thread binding the tracks on this record together was the inspiration from his surrounding environment alongside the novels he was reading at the time. Each piece retains its original character, preserving the essence of its initial spark, creating a cohesive yet eclectic album.

The Mountain's Secret

This work is intended as a meditative companion-piece to an earlier work, https://soundcloud.com/hearingbeings/20211024-night-music-spring, and follows a similar structure. However, it was recorded in an entirely different location (thirty-six kilometres away).

In this piece, the auditory journey of approach towards the distant source has more intervals, and is more gradual, than in the earlier work. Listening to what may be heard along the way is as important as arrival. On this occasion, there is only one Eastern Banjo Frog in the midst of a plenitude of Spotted Marsh Frogs, along with some Brown Tree Frogs and Common Eastern Froglets.

Other than balancing gain levels, the sequence of recordings constituting this work (made during one night at one location) has not been filtered or processed in any way (with the exception only of the final two minutes).

Fixing the volume from the outset to a fairly low level, e.g., around 40 per cent, and certainly not more than 50 per cent, is recommended. What is distant and quiet will gradually become nearer and louder.

Technology and imperfection. The raw and the processed. Curator and curated. Solo explorer and gregarious collaborator. The life and work of Taylor Deupree are less a study in contradictions than a portrait of the multidisciplinary artist in a still-young century.

Deupree is an accomplished sound artist whose recordings, rich with abstract atmospherics, have appeared on numerous record labels, and well as in site-specific installations at such institutions as the ICC (Tokyo, Japan) and the Yamaguchi Center for Arts and Media (Yamaguchi, Japan). He started out, in the 1990s, making new noises that edged outward toward the fringes of techno, and in time he found his own path to follow. His music today emphasizes a hybrid of natural sounds and technological mediation. It’s marked by a deep attention to stillness, to an almost desperate near-silence. His passion for the studio as a recording instrument is paramount in his work, but there is no hint of digital idolatry. If anything, his music shows a marked attention to the aesthetics of error, to the short circuits not only in technological systems but in human perception.

And though there is an aura of insularity to Depuree’s work, he is a prolific collaborator, having worked with the likes of Stephan Mathieu, Christopher Willits, Kenneth Kirschner, Eisi, Frank Bretschneider, Richard Chartier, Savvas Ysatis, and Tetsu Inoue.

Deupree dedicates as much time to other people’s music as he does to his own. In 1997 he founded the record label 12k, which since then has released over 80 recordings by some of the most accomplished musicians and sound artists of our time, among them Alva Noto, Steve Roden, Ryuichi Sakamoto, and Steven Vitiello. Many share with Deupree an interest in stark minimalism, but the label has also found room for, located a common ground with, the acoustic avant-garage, the instrumental derivations of post-rock, and the synthetic extremes of techno.

And collectively, the cover jackets to the 12k album releases have served as an ongoing exhibit of Deupree’s photography, its lofi aesthetic, with an emphasis on damage and wear and antiquated tech, closely paralleling his music. (His photos have also graced numerous books, design anthologies, and other recordings and projects.)

Deupree continues to evolve his sound with an ambition and drive that is masked by his music’s inherent quietude. He approaches each project with an expectation of new directions, new processes, and new junctures.
