Hey friends! The crew that brought you 'Land of Zed' is back to launch a new collaborative concept album adventure! After wrapping our last project, Uziel, Stonerjazz and I dubbed ourselves 'The Smoking Trout'. The 3 of us are just the founding members of this group. Like last time we plan to bring in lots of guest appearances.

This first track is an instrumental. There will be more world building and myth making on subsequent episodes... The Quest for the Holy Dumpling follows a traveling band of characters, some new and some that have already made appearances in other songs. For example Sally and Roberta are the 2 clarinet players that make a cameo in the final Zed song, Amanita Musaria. This track is their cosmic call to action to open the new album. Thanks for checking it out!

Uziel @user-455619833 contributed much of the instrumentation on the second half, including the 'clarinet' lead, the guitar sounding elements, and the percussion that kicks in during the final leg of the song... and also gets lots of credit for developing the mix.

Stonerjazz @user-911083679 contributed the trippy mellotron lead and other experimental melodic elements that you hear during the first half of the track.

I contributed the drums and synth elements that persist across both halves of the song, and finalized the mix.

Paul Hardy (baptised David Paul Frederick Hardy) (2 August 1862 near Bath, Somerset – 2 January 1942 Storrington, Sussex), was an English illustrator, best known for his regular illustrations in The Strand Magazine, his painting of Canterbury Pilgrims (1903) and for his drawings associated with the serials of the writer Samuel Walkey (1871–1953). Paul was the eldest child of David and Emily Hardy. Paul's father was also an artist, as was his grandfather James Hardy senior and his uncles James Hardy junior and Heywood Hardy, all from an old Yorkshire family. All Paul's siblings, Norman, Evelyn and Dorothy Hardy, were illustrators.

The name of the deity corresponds first to the common Germanic name of the "thunder", *þunraz. He is also found by name in the Gallic Taranis. A thunder god with an analogous name meets us in the Baltic Pērkons. The epithet of Iuppiter tonans is derived from the same Indo-European root (s)ten- "thunder, rush, roar, groan." The day of the week Thursday (English Thursday, Danish/Swed. torsdag) is named after Donar or Thor. The day was consecrated already in the antiquity to the gods Zeus and/or Jupiter (Latin dies Iovis, from it also French jeudi, Romanian joi, Spanish jueves, Italian giovedì) and with the adoption of the originally Babylonian/Egyptian 7-day week by the Teutons the Latin term was copied.

The ghosts
Inspired by the bygone era of the 60s-70s-80s and popular art music, especially from the UK! All those little melodies that you tap with your fingertips or whistle...memories...
Artists, dying shadows on the walls, sometimes dazzling light, but their desire to be the best often led them down the road to perdition...
Many artists have never seen the light of the day of glory, these young chrysalises have not had the time to blossom on the big stages and yet some would have largely deserved it as the quality and beauty of their work was sparkling..... 
Doors open and close at great speed in this world. But they are still here, even if they have become ghosts, let us thank them for they have inspired us, shaped us and they continue - Thank you.

Inspiré de l'époque révolue des années 60-70-80 et de la musique artistique populaire, notamment britannique ! Toutes ces petites mélodies que l'on tape du bout des doigts ou que l'on siffle... des souvenirs...
Artistes, ombres mourantes sur les murs, lumière parfois éblouissante, mais leur désir d'être les meilleurs les a souvent conduits sur le chemin de la perdition...
De nombreux artistes n'ont jamais vu la lumière du jour de gloire, ces jeunes chrysalides n'ont pas eu le temps de s'épanouir sur les grandes scènes et pourtant certains l'auraient largement mérité tant la qualité et la beauté de leur travail étaient étincelantes...... 
Les portes s'ouvrent et se ferment à grande vitesse dans ce monde. Mais ils sont toujours là, même s'ils sont devenus des fantômes, remercions-les car ils nous ont inspirés, façonnés et ils continuent - Merci.

The track was created in collaboration on 19 October 2022 (initial composition, recording and mix in MAGIX by Roberto B), 20 November 2022 (subsequent additions, arrangement, recording and mix in GarageBand iOS and Logic Pro X by Alex M), and 28 November 2022 (final arrangement, recording and mix in MAGIX by Roberto B), and posted here on SoundCloud on 2 December 2022 (by Alex M), before the album as a whole.

The artwork cover for the track was designed and completed using PowerPoint and Mac OS Preview and annotated by Alex M in MacOS Preview on 20 November 2022 - in coordination and agreement with Roberto B.

A Call To Everyone

What a wonderful tune Seagull sent me to collaborate on.  His nylon-string and bass playing is lovely but he asked if I could help with a second guitar voice.  The Taylor JKSM seemed the perfect fit with its sweet steel-string acoustic voice.  The undercurrent of meaning in the song is best described by Seagull himself:
"The song is called Stairway, and I realized that it reflects everyone's climb in life. We are encouraged and taught from birth that we must constantly get better at everything. Better upbringing, better behavior, better education, better job, better pay, better things, better health, better parent, better home, better car and so on...But what is the real goal of all this striving? Don't get me wrong, I have no problem with education hopefully producing better and more understanding and empathetic people, and a safer and nicer society. But.....and I think it's a big but.... as we are obviously being trained to buy all the happiness we need in life instead of experiencing it in a peaceful, healthy and experiential life." 
It is a question of what is ultimately important in our life and are we willing to make the climb to reach and attain it.  Something to ponder while you listen:)

My genre influences include electronic, downtempo, lofi, experimental, rock, blues, indie, prog, post rock, ambient, synthwave, trip hop, and hip hop. 

My recent tunes are produced using Ableton Live, FabFilter suite plugins, and often feature synths like Pigments, Microfreak, and Minilogue XD. I'm also beginning to incorporate guitar a lot more!
 
Some of my major artist influences include Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada, DJ Shadow, Radiohead, LCD Soundsystem, the Flaming Lips, Tame Impala, M83, Godspeed you Black Emperor!, Mogwai, Animal Collective, Nicolas Jaar, Dirty Projectors, Massive Attack, Björk, Dan the Automator, Del, the Gorillaz, Reggie Watts, Ween, Neon Indian, Tycho, Ott, Shpongle, Danger Mouse, Built to Spill, Yo La Tengo, Velvet Underground, My Bloody Valentine, Pink Floyd, Modest Mouse, the Books, and too many others to list here.

At home producer of electronic tracks in varying styles - I really enjoy experimenting with melding different genres. 
Been writing songs since the mid 70's whilst playing bass & drums in various bands (the first one was a punk band) and digitally writing since 2006. Retired now, so much more time for having fun with music :) It's just a hobby for me these days; Soundcloud is just a great place to share music & connect with people who have the same interests.
