When the mighty Drumsound and Bassline Smith adopt their 2DB persona you know there’s some serious rave destruction coming. While the label bosses have played
an integral part in the rise of the big-room D&B sound,
they’ve still got their roots in the underground. This raw and gritty guise recently surfaced on the monumental 15 Years of Technique album to deliver the vicious Terrahawk, and now there’s something new for filth-connoisseurs to get their ears around.

As we get into Check Out The Bounce, we’re left in no doubt that this is meant to raise the temperature in the rave. A gangsta staccato synth pattern, undercurrents of squelching bass and an eponymous vocal sample signal that it’s time to step up on the floor. The drop delivers a powerful dose of twisting and fluctuating bass, emphasised by a sparse and insistent beat. This is music to move to, pure and simple.
Quaalude is anything but a sedative. A seductive cloud of atmospheric strings creates a hands-in-the-air vibe, punctured and reshaped by a synth riff in the high end. This riff drives us all the way into the drop of serrated bass, reforming again into part of the rhythm pattern. This track takes sounds on a journey, recontextualising them along the way. And the party is taken along for the ride, effortlessly gliding from laidback to rave-mode.

Here are two more reasons why the 2DB name is an undisputed seal of dancefloor quality. This production team is constantly able to modulate their formula, creating multiple vibes and moods to reinterpret their genre. In short, if it’s 2DB, you know it’s going to be big.

Gradual – Beware feat. Coppa / Swamp

As drum and bass made deeper inroads into the sunlit land of daytime radio and mainstream acceptance in 2015, the underground scene was defined by the dark and technical sound of neurofunk. And repping that style for Technique are one of their most recent signings, the Spanish production team made up of veterans Alerstorm and Ice Stereo, a team now known as Gradual.

“Beware” asserts its personality right from the intro, demonstrating that Gradual aren't shy of adding a little funk to their neuro. The mighty mic man Coppa rolls through to lay out the groove, delivering a scheme that gives that James Brown-style accent to the first beat of the bar. Even amidst the swirl of dark atmospherics, the urge to get your head nodding is irresistible. Then the heavy grind of the bass that sweeps in from the drop takes the heat up to the next level. It's precision-engineered music that expertly balances production science with dancefloor drive.

Then “Swamp” does things a little differently. Opening with high strings and a hint of approaching drums, Gradual draw us into a light cloud of chill-out ambience. This is savagely punctured by a blade of low-end, signalling the approach of something far more dangerous. That something is a stompingly percussive pattern of drums and bass, but that's just the beginning as the beat switches up and builds even further. And this tune keeps going from there, melding and interweaving layers of drums and bassline to keep that rave engaged right to the end.

If you haven't caught up with Gradual's movements yet, this is where to get on board. This release shows just a few of the facets that these guys can bring to their sound. Along with the cold scientific studio skills, they've got a raw funky rhythmic sensibility, adding up to a clear understanding of how to keep raves electrified. They've got a lot more to show off, so better pay attention.

When the sun's out and a season of holidays, festivals, and general good times stretches lazily out in front of you, there's only one thing required to complete the picture. And that's a drum 'n' bass soundtrack, ideally curated by some of the most respected tastemakers in the scene. Lucky us, then. Drumsound & Bassline Smith are back with another Technique Summer compilation stacked with the full three-sixty of DnB. It's big.

Of course, the label bosses themselves treat us to a couple of choice cuts from their studio. There's the epically atmospheric “I Want Your Love”, and you've probably already heard the militant jazz-tech of “The Hustler” scything through a rave in recent weeks.

Then there's Technique's roll-call of soldiers. From the intimate and emotive sounds of Tapolsky & VovKING, via a minimal roller from Kronology and a sunlit take on Gradual's sound, onto the main stage fireworks of L Plus and Tantrum Desire's contributions, and the unshakably individual MaxNRG, we've got every piece in the jigsaw. Document One fans will be buzzing for “Uh Huh VIP”, while recent signings No Concept show what they can do with two different takes on “Silhouette”. T-Phonic & Deadman come correct with the “Time Travel”, while Deadman (now known as Al Storm) gives us two versions of the house-influenced “Always There”.

Clearly, this album is packed with anthems, and that's before we've even discussed the guest contributions from a huge range of disparate artists. Aquasky and North Base make return appearances to the Technique banner, there's the legend that is DJ SS, and Multifunction boss Levela delivers his debut for the label. The explosive euphoria of Smooth's “All Over the World” will already be familiar to those in the know since it dropped as an album sampler, and, similarly, names like NC-17, Dave Owen, and Muffler need no introduction.

You only have to glance down the list of thirty-six tracks on this album and the eye-watering array of artists assembled for this project to see the love that Drumsound & Bassline Smith have put into compiling it. Names range from undisputed institutions of DnB to relative newcomers, with music touching every corner of the scene. This is a summer album, sure, but it's also a 2018 DnB album demonstrating the strength, breadth and depth this music has to offer. The sun's come out and the heat has arrived.
