We launch with DC Breaks’ ‘Slugs’. A gigantic, guttural sonic slam-dunk, the swampy bass slithers and squirms throughout while a paranoid arpeggio adds a critical sense of drama over a heavyweight rhythm. It’s been a massive year for DC Breaks and ‘Slugs’ shows just why. 
Up next is another Ram native who’s had an impeccable year. A quintessential screw-face roller, ‘Portland’ sees Rene LaVice celebrating everything we love about dark, dirty drum & bass. Unrelenting reload-ready bass tones laid gracefully over tight breakbeat: this is a future classic. No question. 
‘Nightfall’ follows. Known for his sharp-tongued MC acuity, here Codebreaker reveals his stunning and soulful vocal skills. Complemented by Stealth’s uncompromising, sheet metal riddim and iced-out mournful minor chords, there’s an incredible sense of balance and head-turning contrast. Truly unique. 
Dose finalises this gargantuan two part EP series with the unruly romp ‘Bounce Off’. Sprung with chop-slapping bass, mind-blowingly heavy kick drums and a hype-heaving MC vocal, this ferocious tear-up lives up to its name in every way: Dancefloor mayhem guaranteed… There is no better way to conclude one of Ram Records’ biggest EP releases of 2013.

An infamously quick-fire dj, as well as one of the most hotly tipped producers to date, Frankee is returning yet again with a single to further solidify his position.

Whether it's from a set played on the notorious Ibiza waterfront, or amongst a packed out, dimly lit stage in super club Fabric, you'll instantly recognise these refined cuts premiered over the last six months. Detonating a hard lined crowd at Drum & Bass Arena's Easter weekend, Power and Downtown are of two totally different flavours, yet still pull raw energy and emotion from dancefloors globally.

Featuring the vocal talents of Simon Franks, 'Downtown' demonstrates an ability to tap into a hugely diverse range of capacities. Fading between carefully textured breaks, as well as a cleverly distorted bass, it spans a hugely intricate composition. Fluctuating note patterns perfectly underpin slowly elevated synths; cutting open and laying bear the producer's depth. Working his more emotive soundscape 'Downtown' epitomises Frankee's versatility and his multidimensional approach to music making.

On the flipside, a much darker standard is set. Winding up before clanking into a maze of snapping hi-hats, reverberating bass and barrages of driving drum loops 'Power' demonstrates the harder style of his production, as seen in previous tracks like 'Snarl' and 'Excalibur'. Brooding, gritty and a perfect 4am grinder, the delivery of this next single presents two opposing tracks that help to exemplify Frankee's vast discography.

The cover art proudly proclaims Technique's Summer 2016 album to be “100% Drum and Bass”. You might be forgiven for thinking that begs more questions that it answers. There's a huge breadth and versatility encompassed within the genre. So, you're left asking, what particular flavour of D&B are we talking about? Well, to answer your query, pretty much all of them.

Across thirty-seven tracks, Drumsound and Bassline Smith have assembled a cross-section of D&B that only has one thing in common: that summertime vibe. The label bosses themselves roll through with the fluid jungle of the Solah-laced “Cover Our Eyes”, the no-holds-barred funk of “Rise of the Black Panther” and their epic dubwise collaboration with Digital, “First World Problem”.

And then there are the big name cameos from artists not normally seen under the Technique banner. Brookes Brothers and Danny Byrd team up with the uplifting drive of “Climb High”, matched in hands-in-the-air power by the euphoric piano of The Prototypes' “Don't Let Me Go”. J Majik recruits 78° and Louie Cabrera for “Day I Left” and “Idcomercial” respectively. And the mighty DJ SS drops an emotively claustrophobic killer in the form of “Expression”.

Of course, the regular regiment of Technique soldiers are present and correct too. Tantrum Desire delivers the tech atmospherics of “Tesoro”, while Kronology subverts the big-room sound with the unpredictable twists and turns of “Everyday”. L Plus backs up rumbling bass and popping beats with entwined chord patterns in “Invincible”. Plus Document One show two different sides to their character, with the jazzfunk vibe of “Klaxon” and the paranoid sci-fi of “Say What”.

And we're nowhere near covering everything this album has to offer. From the jungle tear-out of Brian Brainstorm's “Badman Selector” to the minimal magic of Oder's “Mesmerize”, via the liquid purity of Salaryman's “He Knows”, this is a journey that needs to be experienced. Any selection that takes you straight from Fade's “Disco Ball” into Conspire's “Glare of Brass” then to Salaryman's “Synthesized Melancholia” is making a statement about the strength in depth of the D&B genre right now.

It's all here. This is the whole summertime drum and bass experience cut up into thirty-seven expertly-formed slices which, taken together, represent the full spectrum of what the scene has to offer. It's as simple as that.

To say that Document One “defy categorisation” wouldn't quite get across the whole truth. For one thing, it's a cliché, and to use a cliché to describe their brand of gritty, smoky, jazz-inspired, funk-infused dancefloor D&B just wouldn't be right. After all, they steer well away from cliché in their music, what with their expert melding of the light and the dark, the natural and the synthetic, the laid-back and the crowd-hyping. They've created their own category, and the two tracks on this release are here to stretch the limits of it a couple of notches further. “Chasing Stars” is the sound of effortlessness. 

Two different flavours of drum, the techy kick and snare plus the loose cymbals and fills, roll alongside each other in the intro. Meanwhile noodling keys and the eponymous vocal riff create a gentle head-nodding vibe. Then, without breaking a sweat, Document One call this casual jam-session to order, with a grimy bassline that weaves the whole track into a tightly-knit roller. This is dangerous rave material that you don't see coming. 

Then “Get Da Funk” goes one step more groovy. Yeah, groovy. That's the word for it. Horns and acoustic drums lay down the vibe, then a Motown-style vocal soars over the top to build things up. Then the drop gives us quintessential Document One, as bass and iron fist drums create a rhythmic combination with vocal and horn stabs that is absolutely irresistible. An ice-cool breakdown with added blues guitar gives the opportunity for even more hype in the second drop. 

These tracks could easily be onstage recordings from some ultra-slick band. The deftly expert programming doesn't detract from the feeling of live energy that Document One manage to get in their music. Like the best jazz or funk acts, it's the sound of accomplished technicians letting loose and having some fun. And while they're having fun, the ravers are too. This is D&B as only Document One do it.
