Document One - 7th Dimension EP

Document One had, to put it mildly, a pretty good 2016. Their unique blend of tech, hip-hop, jazz and funk influences have cemented their place among the elite of drum'n'bass producers. Their tunes are consistently at the business end of the DnB download charts and they've garnered support from some of the biggest DJs in the scene. So, this EP, their first release of 2017, bears the weight of a huge amount of expectation.

The title track, “7th Dimension” takes all the elements of an archetypal Document One tune and presents them crisper and sharper than we've ever heard them before. There's an almost liquid intro, peppered with shimmering brass and an atmospherically FXed vocal clip. But then there's the eponymous MC sample, which cuts through the soundscape and prepares us for a switch up. The tune becomes a weighty, dark roller, with Doc One's trademark funk in the seething and warping bassline supported by diamond-tipped drums.

Then “The Rhythm” switches things up. The intro gives no clue as to where we're going with this one, as subtle percussion and one-hit sounds reverberate around a dialogue clip. Don't be lulled into a false sense of security. Where we're going is into a land of indisputable filth. The driving, pulsing bassline has a serrated edge of distortion, and those neck-snapping, uppercut beats are going to do some serious damage whenever you drop this.

“Hypnotic” has something different to say again. This is where it becomes painfully blatant that Document One are never going to be easy to categorise. The fluid pressure of the intro builds into a stomping, grinding bass and beats assault to get the ravers moving. Amidst the percussive mayhem, however, there's still that atmospheric melodic and harmonic subtlety. This could find a home in your set whatever your sub-genre.

In “It's Alright”, yet more worlds collide. There's genuine emotion in the intro and the beautiful breakdown in the middle of the tune, but that kick drum build signals something different entirely. The morphing bassline travels from low-end to mid-range and back again, while the restrained violence of the drums and classic-break fills provide the scaffolding. From one angle, it could look like a Document One twist on the jump-up formula, which is something we've never heard from them before.

Finally, “I Tried” gives us pure, dark, junglist soul music. Elegant pads, keys and sax back up that gorgeous vocal sample, which turns this tune into a guaranteed hands-in-the-air moment. Document One refuse to let this dissolve into sentiment, though. The drop is lethal, as precision-tooled drums drive the dance onwards, and we all know by now how these guys do basslines. This tune has that smoky jazz club moodiness while still being able to bring hype to a rave. It's got instant classic written all over it.

So, it's clear that Document One have lived up to their billing once again as forward-thinking dancefloor destroyers with soul and funk to spare. Many people bemoan the divisions between different sides of DnB, but in this EP, it all comes together. If the future of the music is going to take in the full spectrum, then these producers might just be laying out the blueprint.

“The Moment” picks up exactly where Jubei and Flowdan’s gargantuan anthem “Say Nothin” left off. The result once again prove that In combination the pair are nothing short of explosive, the track should carry a health warning, devastation is 100 percent guaranteed here, no prisoners will be spared and every dance floor will be left in tiny pieces as once again Jubei and Flowdan deliver their collaborative brutal genius.

As if that wasn’t enough the flip backs up with “Tip the Scales” written alongside Marcus Intalex and featuring everyone’s favourite Manchester MC DRS. “Tip the Scales” reaches into the deepest, darkest depths, providing that late rolling shuffle to keep the headz nodding and the people moving, the perfect compliment to the A side and again another snapshot of the overall brilliance from the album itself.


Finishing off everything nicely and just for the physical product buying fans out there we are issuing the release via an extremely limited number of exclusive 10” white label presses - all of which are all individually numbered, signed and hand stamped by Jubei himself, pre-order's have already mounted for the limited release so we expect that these 10"s will be disappearing rather rapidly.  Grab a unique piece of Headz history fast as we’re sure these wont hang around for long.

This next release demonstrates exactly what can happen when you merge a formidable heavyweight with one of the genre’s most promising talents. Jaguar Skills needs little introduction; he’s infamous for his ninja-like DJing skills with years stacked behind the decks. 

As a result, it was no surprise the artist tried his hands at production alongside Chord’s impressive musicality. Already unstoppable from its conception, ‘Lust’ could only be released on an imprint known for its high quality. And RAM Records is proud to unleash this toe-tapping, catchy piece of sonic artwork on the dnb community…One that’s already taken the radio airwaves by storm. 

Opening with a rhythm that curls itself around your aural senses, prepare to be pulled into ‘Lust’ by its funky groove and well-chiselled hooks. The vocal delight of Matti Roots really brings light to the seasonal feel this track creates; an arpeggio of notes underpins each high-hitting voice crescendo. Bright but not without substance, Chords’ production style is instantly recognisable. This debut from Jaguar Skills serves as a perfect platform for the high standards this mix-maker is about to set, as well as the benchmark which Chords has already carved. 
On the flipside, Break holds onto the A-side’s sunny disposition, yet throws down a riddim that hits as heavy as a freight train. The foundations laid by the producer are slightly different, as it rattles forward with clinking percussion, alluding to the kind of drop Break is renowned for. With his distinctive, boundary-pushing drum rolls and bouncy, booming and concise hits, there’s no mistaking a sound which adds another dimension to the remixes’ original. 

You're also served up with another dish which is vastly different from house-guru Monstro. like the previous edit, the record’s humanism winds up within the first thirty seconds, however the seismic impact of its drop rolls out into a house-bassline that thumps with every bar. A genre transition which doesn’t fall short of the original’s production prowess, prepare to hold onto your seats because this serves as the optimal way to wrap up two striking remixes of an already impressive track list. 

Dominating playlists for years to come, this release from RAM is yet again taking the genre to another level. But considering the parties involved, there was no other direction for this record to take.

It hasn't been long since Document One carved their name into the pantheon of drum and bass heavy-hitters with their debut EP on Technique. Already, tracks from “Revolution” have been chalking up serious airtime and rave-play and ensuring that this production team's new release bears the weight of intense anticipation. So what have they got for us this time?

“Faced With the Unknown” takes us straight into darkness. Background atmospherics create a bed for regally cinematic arpeggios and some apocalyptic narration. This fades into distant reverberation only to reassemble as a cybernetic paranoic beat and bassline. This drop adds an extra layer of close-up claustrophobia which gives every drum hit, bass squelch and triggered sample the space and weight to really strike hard. This is four-in-the-morning music for for when daylight is just a memory and it's time to cast a shadow over the rave.

“Purp” is something different. The intro is fully-formed UK hip-hop, socially-conscious bars from Fio and all. But before we have time to strap on our backpacks, there's just a hint of double-time percussion on the horizon, and we're launched into a filthy drop, with grinding mid-range basses and an insistent resonant snare that turns the heat up to eleven. The juxtaposition of funky hip-hop and grimy D&B give this track an irresistible Bristol Sound vibe, showing Document One's respect for the roots while maintaining a totally modern dancefloor sensibility.

It's only Document One's second release on Technique but with their already-prestigious discography and the acclaim for their “Revolution” EP, it's clear this release is going to get serious attention. Showcasing both darkness and light with their trademark musicality, these two tracks are bound for set lists everywhere.

Hibernating against an already impressively tight discography,

There might only be a few releases under the Kronology
moniker, but the experience of the producers
formerly known as Slogun and iOh has shone through
nonetheless. Now, the LA-based duo are regular fixtures
on the set-lists of some of the biggest DJs in the scene.
Take Friction on Radio 1, for example. He’s supported
them since they first hit Technique and recently
premiered this very release. If you heard that (and if you didn’t, you’d better have a good
excuse) you’ll already know they’ve shoved the bar up another couple of notches. Mantra opens up into a world of atmospheric pads while a strident techy kick and reverberant rim-shots mark out the beat. It’s a hypnotic vibe which draws us in further as percussive tones augment the arrangement. As distorted edges of bass start to appear, though, it’s clear the trance-like meditative state is about to be shattered.
The tune drops like a martial arts move. Kronology capture the energy from the ethereal pads and turn it back on itself in the form of bass, using its force to punch through the calmness. The flow of the intro is converted into driving power. Call and response patterns switching between basslines, backed with break-laced drums, bring irresistible movement for the dancefloor.
It’s no surprise that Kronology are building a loyal fanbase among ravers and DJs alike. They consistently deliver heavyweight dancefloor killers with twists and turns that diverge from any known formula. And here’s another one that’s bound for raves and airwaves worldwide.

TECH 149 – Document One – 7th Dimension

There's something about Document One's highly individual style which has resonated with DJs and ravers alike. Throughout 2016, their releases took up almost permanent residence at the top end of DnB download charts and in the sets of the most discerning selectors. They defined their own sound, culling elements from multiple genres and weaving them into dancefloor mayhem. And, if this release is anything to go by, they're going to do it all over again in 2017.

The ethereal horns and vocal sample in the intro set the scene, building an edge of tension. It's got all of that smoky moodiness that Document One can deliver, combining tech darkness with a jazz sensibility. Delicate hints of percussion mark the way, and there's still no hint as to whether we're heading towards laid-back cool or road-hard savagery in the drop. It's Document One, after all, and they can do either.

The eponymous MC sample gives us the signal. And the atmosphere is ripped asunder by the arrival of crisp drums and a pulsating, irresistible bassline. Its stripped-back production gives those core sounds the chance to really make their presence felt. And when the vocals ride over the top, it all comes together to make complete skank-out sense. This is a roller that's going to do some serious damage in the rave. 

Altogether, this track takes us on a tour of the multiple facets of the sound Document One have marked out for themselves. It's got the tech percussion and sample programming, a hip-hop edge, that hint of jazz in the horns and undisputed funk energy in the bass. Simultaneously heavy and subtle, this is proof that the Doc One style is ready and able to make even greater strides in 2017.

In 2016, Document One showed us that they've got their own way of doing things. Equal parts of hip-hop, tech, funk and jazz combine into a flavour that's got musicality, individuality and, always, dancefloor energy. No wonder we've all got used to seeing their name at the pinnacle of the DnB download charts and in the setlists of most of the scene's top DJs. So, is it more of the same for 2017?

Well, the intro of “The Rhythm” might suggest that we're going down a more chilled route. We're in a reverberant, almost dubby soundscape, as stabs and percussive hits echo in the background while a dialogue sample tells us about the philosophy of rhythm. There's that Document One staple in those hints of brass, but, really, there's no sign of what this track is about to deliver.

There's certainly no indication of the utter filth we're about to be dropped into. Pounding, heavyweight drums stomp any chill-out vibes into oblivion. Meanwhile a gritty, serrated bassline cuts through the atmosphere with its edge of distortion. Document One's productions have always been hard, but “The Rhythm” takes things to another level. This is going to take some heads off whenever it's dropped.

So, it seems that Document One have still got more up their sleeve than they've shown up to now. The crisp cleanness they've demonstrated in previous releases has been supplemented by all-out aggression. If these producers are starting 2017 off with this level of militant violence, then who knows where they might take things next? Better pay close attention.

This is my second track with the amazing undiscovered talent, Granular Sumo. This guy deserves way more credit than he gets. He's truly dedicated to the art of writing music. His sound design is uncomparable. I've (Slynk) been around for a while. You probably know me for my Glitch Hop and Funk joints. But way back, about 15 years ago when I first discovered music production, I found a deep connection with jump up style dnb. There's so much energy and it just feels so good to dance to. Back then I'd decided I wanted to become a drum and bass producer but somewhere along the line, I discovered funk and glitch hop. But occasionally I revisit my old friend drum and bass. And I've got to say, it's been a while. I've missed you! To all the dance floor ragers and jump up people, this one is for you.

Document One had, to put it mildly, a pretty good 2016. Their unique blend of tech, hip-hop, jazz and funk influences have cemented their place among the elite of drum'n'bass producers. Their tunes are consistently at the business end of the DnB download charts and they've garnered support from some of the biggest DJs in the scene. So, this EP, their first release of 2017, bears the weight of a huge amount of expectation.

The title track, “7th Dimension” takes all the elements of an archetypal Document One tune and presents them crisper and sharper than we've ever heard them before. There's an almost liquid intro, peppered with shimmering brass and an atmospherically FXed vocal clip. But then there's the eponymous MC sample, which cuts through the soundscape and prepares us for a switch up. The tune becomes a weighty, dark roller, with Doc One's trademark funk in the seething and warping bassline supported by diamond-tipped drums.

Then “The Rhythm” switches things up. The intro gives no clue as to where we're going with this one, as subtle percussion and one-hit sounds reverberate around a dialogue clip. Don't be lulled into a false sense of security. Where we're going is into a land of indisputable filth. The driving, pulsing bassline has a serrated edge of distortion, and those neck-snapping, uppercut beats are going to do some serious damage whenever you drop this.

“Hypnotic” has something different to say again. This is where it becomes painfully blatant that Document One are never going to be easy to categorise. The fluid pressure of the intro builds into a stomping, grinding bass and beats assault to get the ravers moving. Amidst the percussive mayhem, however, there's still that atmospheric melodic and harmonic subtlety. This could find a home in your set whatever your sub-genre.

In “It's Alright”, yet more worlds collide. There's genuine emotion in the intro and the beautiful breakdown in the middle of the tune, but that kick drum build signals something different entirely. The morphing bassline travels from low-end to mid-range and back again, while the restrained violence of the drums and classic-break fills provide the scaffolding. From one angle, it could look like a Document One twist on the jump-up formula, which is something we've never heard from them before.

Finally, “I Tried” gives us pure, dark, junglist soul music. Elegant pads, keys and sax back up that gorgeous vocal sample, which turns this tune into a guaranteed hands-in-the-air moment. Document One refuse to let this dissolve into sentiment, though. The drop is lethal, as precision-tooled drums drive the dance onwards, and we all know by now how these guys do basslines. This tune has that smoky jazz club moodiness while still being able to bring hype to a rave. It's got instant classic written all over it.

So, it's clear that Document One have lived up to their billing once again as forward-thinking dancefloor destroyers with soul and funk to spare. Many people bemoan the divisions between different sides of DnB, but in this EP, it all comes together. If the future of the music is going to take in the full spectrum, then these producers might just be laying out the blueprint.
