Summertime, and the riddims are breezy. When the warm
weather heralds the arrival of festivals, carnivals and poolside
raving, it’s time to break out the new season’s collection
of beats. And, celebrating fifteen years deep in the game,
Technique Recordings are dropping a Summer Selection
album to soundtrack the sunshine properly. This first taste of
the album comes from label bosses Drumsound & Bassline
Smith who, judging by their show itinerary, know a thing or two about hyping a festival crowd.
It’s time for the ravers to raise up their hands immediately as Memories floats in. A rising chord structure delivered by a subtle combination of keys and pads provides a foundation for an elegantly percussive synth melody. Add in a ghostly vocal sample and this tune casually casts a cloud of euphoria over the party. The deal is sealed when the drop provides the weight of bubbling bass and effortlessly punchy drums to the mix. This is a tune that’s as uplifting in the midnight haze as it is under blue skies.
Then there’s a different mood for Primitive. Dramatic stabs kick a hole in the atmosphere, punctuating a pattern of ever-rising arpeggiation overlaid with a suspense-laden dialogue sample. And that’s just the intro, before sirens signal a build into a high-voltage drop made of a taut razor-wire bassline and uppercut-force kicks and snares. Rolling high-end percussion and those blockbuster synth-strikes keep the energy at IMAX dimensions. When it’s that time for the carnival crowd to properly let loose and go just a touch grimy, this is one to draw for.
So, Drumsound & Bassline Smith have shown us two angles on the sunlit rave experience. And with a decade and a half of experience feeding into the Summer Selection album, this is clearly just a small taste of what’s to come. Better grab your shades and your sunscreen, because Technique Recordings are about to light up the summer.

Veterans of previous Mayan Audio releases, Essex-based duo Kritix are back with MYN006, the All Of Me EP.

The EP begins with the title track, featuring Jenny Jones. Piano meets synth, meets old skool beats in the intro, before Jones’ strident and emotional vocals kick in. The drums are added to, the bass starts to boom, and you know Kritix are on to a winner with All Of Me. Feel the flow, and feel the EP get off to quite a start. 

Next up is the deeper, darker We Are Here, which enters some new territory for Kritix. Almost industrial in its influence, this is a mighty slab of funk. Feel the space age vibes as Kritix create an entire universe through their music. The drums will attack, the bass will destroy, and We Are Here will be a statement of intent from the artists and producers. This one is just big. 
Into The Deep is another turn in the road, with flowing, liquid flavours the order of the day. Melodic vibes underpin the tune, with flashes of funk sitting over the top. More variation is on offer in the beats, which fluctuate and build in turn. Closer Pogo rips the fabric of the universe with some crazy, off-kilter effects and full-on bass madness. A radical and invigorating end to the EP.
At the same time as the release of this EP will be Mayan's 1st year anniversary from when the label launched in September 2014 and will also see them putting on their first event at Club 65 in Vauxhall, London. Showcasing their own exclusive talent, special guest artists on the night and including a live PA from Jenny Jones performing the title track from the EP 'All Of Me'. Elevated far above the streets in one of the towering high-rise buildings that dominated the urban heart, the sound of the high-octane pursuit below barely penetrated the bleak musty cubical. Its cigarette-stained walls are etched with the marks he’d made to signify the passing of his life in this space. The ever-present hum of building’s servers that once he’d thought faintly pleasant, oppressively penetrated his eardrums - continually evolving… scraping the inside of his brain like sonic sandpaper. Flickering lights from the city’s exterior advertisements strobed across the dark sea of cubicles, the huddled occupants of each fixated on the faint glow of their viewscreens, their enslaved minds pouring over the flow of a sea of meaningless data. The lights hurt his eyes these days, each wave illuminating his dank space peaked his migraine – like shards of glass penetrating deep into the roots of his skull and twisting within his cortex on the way. He was at the edge, hovering on the very horizon of sanity itself… the boundary blurring – what was more insane – this existence? Or the one he desired – to tear himself free from the bonds of this reality… for his heart to burn with the light of a thousand stars as he steered his body towards the purity of presence outside of this slavery… to defy the great architect and stand proud just for a moment… Just as this thought manifested, he felt the tight grip upon his shoulder - briskly pulling him around to see the corrupt, fat, distorted face of the overseer sneering down through that twisted crevice of a mouth. Those chains broke – he felt his hand grasping the keyboard that he had been so long manacled to in his mind, moving with the rotation of the chair as he rose swiftly with the roar that escaped him so fluidly. The overseer’s shocked expression froze in time as the keyboard collided with his mouth – landing with such brutal force that the shockwave passed through his fat face. With that roar, he felt free… he had found himself.
 
SEGMENT & CONCEPT VISION follow up their incredible MAMMOTH EP with their 2nd impressive outing on neurofunk’s leading label, EATBRAIN. Proving once more the exceptional skill of their combined production with the 5 heavy-duty tracks of the ROAR EP (including free release with the vocal-led ‘EMPIRE’), the pair set the bar high through their powerful sound. Whether it’s the stuttering might of title track ROAR with its nightmare fueled arpeggios, or the dub-influenced sci-fi majesty of THIRST (featuring COD3X) - each track proves more relentless than the last. This is tear-out neurofunk at its best, proving once again the strength of the EATBRAIN sound and cementing another incredible pair of Russian producers within the roster.

Eutopia kicks off BMotion’s new single with a distinctly retro, jazz-fueled intro. Twisting and turning through a range of distorted synths and progressive drums, the track quickly picks up pace before catapulting into a hard-hitting drop packed with fierce stabs and snares. Splicing together an explosive mix of funky retro and a heavy, rolling bassline, the producer impresses from the get-go with this turbo charged opening tune.

On the flip side, Release Valve opens up on a more chilled vibe. Starting off by incorporating an electric guitar into an echoing build-up, the track is then instantly transformed as a powerful, gritty bassline takes over the moment the drop hits. Bringing some next-level energy and aiming straight for the center of the dancefloor, this killer tune packs some serious ferocity.

Showcasing yet more faultless production and bringing to the table undoubtedly two of the biggest Drum and Bass tracks to hit dancefloors this autumn, BMotion is wasting no time in setting himself apart from the competition.

There might only be a few releases under the Kronology
moniker, but the experience of the producers
formerly known as Slogun and iOh has shone through
nonetheless. Now, the LA-based duo are regular fixtures
on the set-lists of some of the biggest DJs in the scene.
Take Friction on Radio 1, for example. He’s supported
them since they first hit Technique and recently
premiered this very release. If you heard that (and if you didn’t, you’d better have a good
excuse) you’ll already know they’ve shoved the bar up another couple of notches. Mantra opens up into a world of atmospheric pads while a strident techy kick and reverberant rim-shots mark out the beat. It’s a hypnotic vibe which draws us in further as percussive tones augment the arrangement. As distorted edges of bass start to appear, though, it’s clear the trance-like meditative state is about to be shattered.
The tune drops like a martial arts move. Kronology capture the energy from the ethereal pads and turn it back on itself in the form of bass, using its force to punch through the calmness. The flow of the intro is converted into driving power. Call and response patterns switching between basslines, backed with break-laced drums, bring irresistible movement for the dancefloor.
It’s no surprise that Kronology are building a loyal fanbase among ravers and DJs alike. They consistently deliver heavyweight dancefloor killers with twists and turns that diverge from any known formula. And here’s another one that’s bound for raves and airwaves worldwide.
