In case you don't know, WAR is essentially the black ops division of Technique Recordings. The imprint only emerges from cover on rare occasions and, when it does, it always signals the delivery of a heavy payload of explosive dancefloor material. This particular mission demonstrates that the name Worldwide Audio Recordings is no idle boast. This unit has truly international credentials.



Then Ukraine's in the house, as MaxNRG's “50,000” rolls through. This one's the sound of a producer refusing to compromise on their quirky individual style. The pizzicato of the intro weaves into a progression of harmonic tones and the pitch-twisted vocal element that gives the track its name. Pop-and-lock drums and swathes of mid-range drive, punctuated with classic MPC-style hits give this an irresistible groove.
This EP shows off both the international and interconnected nature of the scene. Showing off musicality, technical expertise and the variety of individual takes on rave-aimed D&B,
“Cubic” provides an insight into the minds of some of the hottest producers from around the world. And it'll destroy some dancefloors in the process.

Jungle music has taken on many forms over the years, but one consistent hallmark has been its rich dubplate culture. For many of the sound’s leading artists, every record played in a mix or DJ set comes with its own unique story of how it landed there, often because it will never be heard again.

International collective Chopstick Dubplate have shown this throughout their career. While the crew are most obviously affiliated with their Chopstick Dubplate imprint, they’re just as well known for their mixtapes, where they pull together unreleased material from across the spectrum of jungle and ragga music.

On 12th January, we invite founding members Aries, Jacky Murda and Demolition Man to play Room One as part of a drum & bass and jungle heavy bill. To mark the occasion, they sent us over a free download of their new Taqueria Chopstick recording, an hour-long mixtape fully stacked with dubplates from the crew and some of their closest peers.

Before this release, we'd previously seen Levela on Technique Recordings as part of the definitive “Summer 2018” album. His “Tribal Funk” was one of the standout cuts, with its neo-classic blend of rolling beats, vibesy live instrument samples, and scything basslines. No surprise then, that the call-up to deliver his follow-up Technique release was quickly forthcoming. “Error” opens into an atmosphere of tension-building darkness. Increasingly discordant timbres swirl around warped percussive tones. An alarm call signals imminent danger. This is the sound of an underground black site laboratory where catastrophe is about to strike. And then it does. The explosive, reverberant, serrated-edged bassline that drops will have ravers begging for the reload, but you're going to want to let this run to experience Levela's glitched-up switch-ups in all their glory. Then “Lurkers” continues the journey into the shadowlands. Metronomic heart-monitor bleeps and a seething undercurrent of approaching bassline danger set the mood in the intro. And then Levela drops us into a twisted and rhythmically unpredictable take on jump-up. Multiple offset patterns crunch against each other while the short controlled bursts of bassline drive the tune onwards. Both these tracks are pure dancefloor drum 'n' bass, weaving together threads from the jump-up tradition, the roller revival, as well as a sinister edge of tech. And ravers from all corners of the scene are going to love it.

Core members of the hand-picked elite force that make up the Technique Recordings roster, No Concept are known as much for their eclectic selection of influences as they are for sheer dance demolition.

And here's how they're setting their stall out for 2020.

First up is a trip down memory lane with 'Be the 1'. No Concept deliver pitch perfect old skool vibes in the intro with pitched-up vocals, breaks, stabs...all that 1991 goodness. But behind the throwback facade lies a militant smasher aimed straight at contemporary dancefloors. The savage bassline assault blended masterfully with the retro elements means this is going to find fans amongst selectors of all persuasions.

Then 'Remember' flips the script. No Concept take us through moods of anxious tension, soulful emotion, and hyped anticipation before we've even got to the drop. Moments of melody and harmony signal that this tune isn't going to do things by the book. The dark minimalism of the drop, made from rolling beats and modulating bass tones punctated with gorgeous floating vocal samples, is a call to arms that's guaranteed to resonate with ravers.

No Concept live up to their name once again with two tunes that defy neat categorisation. The constantly evolving style of these producers means that each one of their releases delivers something new every time. Better pay close attention.
