Being a production line of carefully crafted composition with a meticulous production standard, Calyx & Teebee have delivered yet again. Back on vocal duties, Calyx demonstrates the pair’s multi-dimensional approach to beat making. With ADE looming on the horizon, it only seemed apt for Ram to yet again provide the perfect drum and bass entrée for Europe’s premium dance event. Set to bring another stellar line up from their roster, this compilation packed full of exclusives helps to epitomise the imprint’s legacy within dance music. Including brand new cuts, demonstrating the Ram’s longevity, this album plays homage to two decades of output. 

Leading you deeper into the dark side of 2015, this year’s Ramsterdam compilation not only pedestals the artists who’ve made such a titanic impact throughout the last ten months, but also the emerging talent from sister label Program and Ram’s newest signees. Whether it’s the old school, growling riddim from Aggressor Bunx, or Calyx & TeeBee’s tell-tale, trembling bassline, each track gives the album a unique vantage point.

Featuring on the collosal track listing is Delta Heavy; an exclusive which relays their elevating, pumping composition, it’s a dancefloor banger sure to detonate any crowd. And Frankee also makes a welcomed return, following the release of his anticipated single ‘Downtown’. ‘Raptor’ is unforgiving, snapped up by different animalistic samples and stridently aggressive – pedestalling Frankee’s unforgiving production standards.

On a totally different vibe, Freek is back with ‘Born Different’, a clanking yet powerful number, one which gears up into LFO-lead chaos with snapping percussion between each break. Brand new music from production outfits Teddy Killerz and Mind Vortex also make a very valuable addition, proving their unbridled talent, with merciless yet complex records that are fierce and gagging to be let loose on Amsterdam’s clubs.  
Two of this year’s most resounding tracks from the Ram camp, Bensley’s ‘Aftermath’ and Gerra & Stone’s ‘L.I.E.S.’ have also received revamps, providing two anticipated VIPs already igniting sets worldwide. Loadstar also deliver the goods; brand new heavy-hitter ‘Dune’ demonstrates exactly why they’ve become such revered names across the genre.

So, here’s to another Amsterdam Dance Event. One with a soundtrack provided by one of the most enduring labels, and stellar rosters, that dance music has played host to. The Tantrum Desire brand is most associated with the kind of epic  productions that have seen drum and bass become a mainstay of the mainstream. True heads, though, will know that there’s always been an undercurrent of genre-twisting experimentalism present, which came to the fore on last year’s huge album Diversified. So, which corners are explored on this EP?

Nationwide Rocker opens in a dark and techy landscape. Reverberating stabs underpinned by the insistent buzz of low end strikes suggest we’re building into a display of neurofunk technique. And then we’re dropped into something that isn’t quite categorisable. It’s hard, dancefloor music, built from a stripped-back rhythm sequence and a succession of expertly-twisted basses. This is the collision of raw, visceral energy with that trademark Tantrum Desire slick production science.

Then Airhead takes us somewhere different. With a funky techstep call and response pattern, this is an instant dancefloor bubbler. And there’s an eighties electro sensibility woven into the stabs and synth-effects which makes this feel like it could be a 2016 rework of a forgotten crate-dug classic. It’s minimal and focussed but, as you’d expect from Tantrum Desire, it refuses to let the temperature drop, with precision-crafted builds to keep attention gripped on the bass-and-mid interplay right to the finish.

You won’t be prepared for what Think About You has to offer. A bleeps-and-pads hands-in-the-air hardcore intro drops into some triplet-time rave workout material. We’re treated to mid-range grind resolving into luxuriant sweeping tones over a skippy 6/8 time-signature. But ravers and MCs better not get too comfortable, as a “Switch it up” sample signals a slam into 4/4 time. Then the breakdown cools things off ready to go back in with the madness once again.If you didn’t know about Tantrum Desire’s versatility then you should have been paying closer attention. Don’t worry, though, because this EP is a perfect representation of the serpentine rule-bending contained within the sound. It’s all dancefloor music, but beyond that, anything’s possible

Hurtling towards the release of their sophomore album ‘All Or Nothing’, Calyx & TeeBee display their versatility on this, their new single. Having proven their worth with a decade and a half of success, the duo take their unique sound and apply it to two haunting tracks that are sure to get fans of expertly crafted D&B excited for the forthcoming long player.

Leading the way is ‘Elevate This Sound’ a beautifully constructed piece of music that underpins a fully structured song complete with one of the finest vocals to ever grace a drum & bass record. Skipping beats are underpinned with layers of Rhodes organs, subtly effected emotions and a moving bassline which ensures this track will be as at home on dance floors worldwide as it is on your mp3 player.

Flip over and Calyx & TeeBee offer up a track that bears their signature hallmarks infused with a fresh feel. ‘Hurting’ is packed with the kinds of twists, turns and downright gut-wrenching basslines you’ve come to expect from this duo. Stepping drums and grinding bass notes are interspersed with haunting vocal snippets and plenty of the signature sound that will keep the drum & bass elite happy.

No event celebrates dance music’s excess and success like the Miami Winter Music Conference. Having outgrown its four-day flesh-pressed networking roots, the last two weeks of March sees the Florida hotspot don the crown as Party Central. A clubland Mecca for fans and industry players alike, it’s home to all manner of attractions during the fortnight including Ultra Fest, Spring Break, honeys, hunks and a whole host of pop-up parties held everywhere from poolsides to pool clubs.
